To wonder where the clap is for the rest of the key workers

I fully support the NHS. But where's the clap for the supermarket staff slogging their guts out completely at risk. The delivery drivers? The teachers the utility workers, police and every one who so far is bearing to brunt of this crisis. If you're one of those other keyworkers....I applaud you too, as much as the NHS.

I can not stand this "but what about" nonsense. I clapped for the NHS. I also clapped for anyone who has to leave the house, when the majority of us want to barricade ourselves in.

heidbuttsupper · 26/03/2020 20:53

The clap

Sorry....Grin

Pat123dev · 26/03/2020 20:54

Ok I see how that's come across and probably really bad timing.
I just want to see appreciation for everyone who's going over and above during this, risking their safety to help others.
There's no disputing what the NHS workers are going through and it's only going to get worse.

Appreciating the NHS doesnt take away from anyone else. Doing something nice for one group doesnt equal doing something negative to another group.

Our local chippy offered free meals for NHS workers last weekend. The Facebook post was full of "angry" faces and comments like "what about me, I'm a key worker as I work in Waitrose" and "what about prison workers, they work really hard too" and so on. People cant do something nice without someone else getting offended.

stardance · 26/03/2020 20:55

I clapped for everyone still working to keep things going.... I thought it was for all key workers anyway?!

Runmybathforme · 26/03/2020 20:56

I truly appreciate everything shop workers and others are doing to keep us all going, but you have to be joking. My colleagues and I are risking our health, and those of our loved ones every day, for a pitiful wage. You obviously don’t have a clue what we do. We didn’t ask for the clapping thing by the way.

Thank you

I think you probably need to spend a few hours in a hospital to fully appreciate the conditions that many NHS staff are working under.

lazyarse123 · 26/03/2020 21:00

@sapphire I work in a supermarket and it's not "JUST ABUSE" it's the very real danger of catching the virus same as every other customer facing job eg: postal workers, bus drivers etc.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/03/2020 21:01

What are YOU doing for other keyworks OP? I'm getting pretty fed up with all the people on social media that are jumping on the people who are trying to do something nice, because they aren't offering their time and resources in the way the keyboard warrior wants them too. 'Whataboutary' is so pathetic, to think at a time like this people are complaining that NHS workers are being appreciated o_O

Fishbiscuits · 26/03/2020 21:03

& I also can't stand those new FB "I can't stay at home, I'm a Keyworker" show-off profile pic photoframes. It's telling that you never see NHS staff do all that.

The only people I have seen with those “show off profile pic photo frames” have been NHS nurses

Tink2007 · 26/03/2020 21:03

Does there really need to be a “what about...” post?

DioneTheDiabolist · 26/03/2020 21:04

You can have some of my claps OP. I am appreciative of our shop workers, our delivery people, our civil servants, transport workers and everyone else working hard to keep us going.Smile👏

Ladyglitterfairydust · 26/03/2020 21:06

Both myself and dh are teachers and I don’t think we deserve a clap tbh. We’re doing our bit to help, but we’re definitely not working as hard or on the front line in the same way as NHS workers.

Pat123dev · 26/03/2020 21:08

@LivingDeadGirlUK I work as a caterer, and I have lost most of business due to covid 19, so I have been baking treats and sending them out. Chemists, police station hospitals etc. Might help brighten their day.

For my family who all clapped (I'm not in the UK) it was also a bit of a statement to say that the NHS is valued and loved and that people will fight for it.

It is at such risk of being broken up and privatised and whilst I massively appreciate everything the individual staff are doing to help my family and friends, I love the institution too and it has never needed our support and protection more than right now.

I really hope that at the next election after this crisis, people will prioritise the NHS and hold whoever comes to power to account of they don't step up.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 26/03/2020 21:14

Oh jesus, here we go again.

If we can't clap for everyone, we shouldn't clap for anyone?
If we can't give free stuff to everyone, we shouldn't give free stuff to anyone?
If we can't give special shopping times to everyone, we shouldn't give special shopping times to anyone?
If we can't give money to everyone, we shouldn't give money to anyone?

...and on and on and on and bloody on.

Life isn't fair. Deal with it.

georgialondon · 26/03/2020 21:17

Why don't you organise it if you feel strongly about it then.

dreamingbohemian · 26/03/2020 21:17

I get it OP.

My husband is in food retail, he is in direct contact with hundreds of people a day, in an area with a lot of cases, so pretty much exposing himself (and us) to a great extent.

Without food retail staff, none of you would be able to eat!

He doesn't expect any gratitude but I wish people would spare a thought for all these people, the vast majority of which are on low wages.

DeeCeeCherry · 26/03/2020 21:17

The only people I have seen with those “show off profile pic photo frames” have been NHS nurses

Not true at all fishbiscuits & you know it.

& even if it were (which is isn't) if anybody deserves a frame it's them. But they don't do the attention crave.

Still, the Waspish Whatabouterers with their begrudgery can go to a supermarket worker if ever worried about health I'm sure, so all will be well.

1300cakes · 26/03/2020 21:19

Of course other key workers are important. People working in food production, delivery and selling are the most important, along with water and electricity supply workers. Without hcp some of us would die, without them we all would. Police and army are right up there as well.

You can see why people are concentrating on medical staff though. Reports out of Spain and Italy are that 30% of drs and nurses are sick, and comprise 10% of the critical patients. While supermarket staff are at risk, they aren't falling sick and dying in the same numbers, no where near.

But either way, the clap isn't a decree from the government, it's an idea that someone had. You've also had an idea so do something about it.

drinkygin · 26/03/2020 21:19

Why don’t you start a campaign for shop assistants and teachers then if you’re so bothered 🙄 🙄 and see if you feel like clapping nhs staff if you get coronavirus and need hospital treatment!

Booksandwine80 · 26/03/2020 22:03

Oh. This again Hmm

limpbizkit · 26/03/2020 22:08

I'm a nurse and actually I agree with you op. I find it unfair that we're singled out as special. We are paid to do our jobs and the conditions that goes with It.

drinkygin · 26/03/2020 22:13

@limpbizkit we absolutely are not paid for the conditions that go along with it! No way.
