Without coming into contact with people?!

I can’t get to my car (medical trips today) without getting close to children playing in the road

And I can’t walk our dog without crossing paths with about 100 other people. In addition to all the children on the estate playing out in the road, many others are playing in their front gardens - meaning I would have to walk in the road to stay 6ft from them. Down one road there was at least 5 groups of people (who are not one family or from one household) hanging around just on the pavement having a chat and many of whole were drinking beers(!) out in the sun
There were also people filing in and out of all the local shops for ‘essential’ shopping - such as an ice cream, or a can of coke.

This is not a summer holiday!

What is so hard about these guidelines and why does no one care?!

That's not indicative of all over - I'm in the UK and all our local shops round here have an only one person allowed in the shop at a time.
People shouldn't be letting their kids play out though, that's out of order - parents should be keeping them in.

Alladdsup · 25/03/2020 18:36

People are dicks. I say this way more often than I used to. In fairness, we did spent a long time telling people it's just the flu, wash your hands, herd immunity will help etc, maybe it's taking a while to sink in now it's all changed. It seems to be being treated as an extra holiday unfortunately.

Leaannb · 25/03/2020 18:37

YANBU to believe you could do those things. However,I will be the first to say that my children are riding their dirt bikes right now practicing their jumps

drinkygin · 25/03/2020 18:38

Oh no, not beers(!) Grin

On a serious note yes of course they’re being unreasonable- people generally are treating this like a big jolly. Boris Johnson’s advice is still pathetically vague though and until he closes all non essential business and parks etc then people will carry on.

crazydiamond222 · 25/03/2020 18:41

I live in a rural area and was walking on the pavement today when a cyclist rode right next to me on the pavement less than 30cm away and said a cheery hello. I was not impressed.

Ishihtzuknot · 25/03/2020 18:46

I agree, it’s amazing how the majority of my neighbours have suddenly taken up exercising today. There have been groups of people socialising on my road all day. I hope they are all fined or arrested the selfish gits

CallmeAngelina · 25/03/2020 18:50

What counts as exercise? Dh and I just walked the dog and there was a guy fishing in the river.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/03/2020 18:53

I keep hearing/reading that people are still mixing and not following the rules. I have to say, it's the complete opposite where I live (village in the North but fairly close to a small town).

Everyone here is staying home unless they have to. If people are out (e.g. I had to be today to go to the post office to sort my deceased Nana's account out) they are practising social distancing, small numbers in shops, roads virtually empty etc.

I genuinely don't understand why anyone would di anything different Hmm

Areyoufree · 25/03/2020 18:55

It’s a ghost town around here. People will cross the road rather than walk past you. Slightly eerie.

Snufflesdog · 25/03/2020 18:55

Sorry to sound so Mumsnet @drinkygin Grin it was just that it’s like 2 o’clock in the afternoon, midweek and they’re clearly treating this like a holiday. The beers were more a symbol of the holiday atmosphere and the fact they’d planned to go hang out with some other people on the street and were hanging around there for a while!
It wasn’t a passing hello!

Staypositivepeople · 25/03/2020 18:56

All the kids front and back of my house are out in the road ,on bikes ,playing together,as normal ,it’s just like a half term holiday for them.
Shops and chippy are open ,people are hanging around
People are getting in their car driving of like normal
There’s no difference,
Lord helps us all from the foolish twats who won’t listen and stay in

Fairyliz · 25/03/2020 18:56

Blimey where do you live op? I’m in the Midlands and went for a forty minute walk around the housing estate and saw about three people out. Really easy to avoid people.

KellyHall · 25/03/2020 18:57

Legal rights to enforce the lockdown only start from tomorrow. From tomorrow police will be authorised to disperse crowds and make arrests if necessary.

Pp are right - people are fucking idiots!

Justaboy · 25/03/2020 18:58

I think that Boris & Co are going the have to alter what we can and can't do keeping people cooped up and home isnt going to do their mental well being any good at all!.

We maybe need a bit of a comprimise on this but the public have to learn that a isolation is the be all and end all of it.

A few people wandering around over open land APART from each other may have to be the comprimise thats given..

bringbacksideburns · 25/03/2020 19:04

Where do you live?
I live in a pretty big town but there are quiet walks and I only passed a couple of people who kept their distance yesterday at 4pm.

Apart from the kid on a bike who whizzed past me whose parents were apparently behind me. Hmm

I think we have to pick times when it isn't too busy. Easy to do if you don't work as you can go out early in the mornings but harder when you are working from home and are more restricted.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 25/03/2020 19:07

Walk down the middle of the road if you have to. Honestly, you aren't at risk if you momentarily come within less than 6ft of someone else.

cosytoaster · 25/03/2020 19:11

It's the opposite where I am. All neighbours home and inside - and there's a lot of children on our road, social distancing when I walked the dog. Really long post office queue as everyone kept 2m apart. I'm not a Boris fan but I think his message has been clear enough. Some people are just stupid.

WeWantSweet · 25/03/2020 19:12

I can understand the disconnect, people thinking that they'll go somewhere remote in the expectation that they will be the only ones there, only to find that actually many other people also thought the same thing!

alloutoffucks · 25/03/2020 19:12

I think as the deaths stack up they will stay inside.

eaglejulesk · 25/03/2020 19:13

I'm not in the UK and I just heard someone on the radio saying "Don't follow in the footsteps of the UK, and take the lock-down seriously"

GnomeDePlume · 25/03/2020 19:14

@Fairyliz perhaps it's a Midlands thing! I'm East Midlands and here few people are out. We went to our allotment, shouted hello to a couple of people while there and that was about it.

BreconBeBuggered · 25/03/2020 19:15

Pretty quiet here, I must say - much more so than on Monday, before restrictions were put in place. I had to drive to the pharmacy and saw a police officer wagging her finger at a pair who were walking down the street - one of them was an elderly woman who looked as if she should be indoors. I know DH would be happy to see police moving people along on our road, but that's mainly because he's stuck at his desk and slightly resentful of any whiff of holiday atmosphere when he's working his arse off and not allowed to do the outdoor activities he relies on for his sanity.

BilboBercow · 25/03/2020 19:15

People are allowed in their gardens op. Especially people with kids - they need fresh air and exercise.

Daisiest · 25/03/2020 19:16

It's like a bank holiday here. Families popping to the shop for sweets, ice cream etc. DH went to the shop on the way home from work for milk, and the guy said they've been busier than usual with mainly elderly people, popping in to buy the paper, stamps or to do the lottery.

It's fucking madness.

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 19:16

Our road’s like a morgue. I actually wondered today if everyone had died.
