No children allowed in supermarket

My sister went to Tesco with her toddler and was told no children allowed from next week. Understand this is wise for infection control but what if you're a single parent with tiny kids and can't do online shopping?

men are off work toot doesn't just affect women

its not discrimination....the schools closed and dont want kids there, so is that discrimination too? no, its common sense

keep kids at home where possible!

MissCherryCakeyBun · 25/03/2020 22:15

I was shopping in Tesco Yeovil today and there were 2adults with 2 and 3 children groups in the store....explain to me why this is necessary ??? Surely if one of them can drive and the other can't? The one that drives goes to the shops or even drives and stays with the children's in the car? Then there were the parents with a gaggle of pissed off teenagers in tow....several of these.

At what point do people think this is a good idea?

I was a single parent for many years so understand the problems of shopping when you have no one to look after your children....however when you do have another parent or have teenagers who can at the very worst be left in the car while you shop what the hell are you doing increasing the risk for the retail staff who are literally risking their ( and that of their families ) health

This will quite possibly kill you and your children if you continue to take these risk

BeetrootRocks · 25/03/2020 22:30

Sapphire the vast majority of single parent families in the UK are headed by a woman.

Time and time again, when the shit hits the fan, it is when who bear the brunt.

Kastanien · 25/03/2020 22:37

so the rules need to get stricter and stricter if we are going to survive this.

But if the rules are so strict they mean certain groups in society cannot get basic food supplies then those people are not going to survive- but not because of the virus.

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 22:38

Theres no way 2 weeks worth of shopping for a family of 5 would fit in one basket. Maybe for a couple but not a family. I keep having to go out because my local shop will only let me have one item of each product. 4 pints of milk cannot last us a week let alone 2 weeks and 3 items from bigger stores maybe but it isn't fitting in a basket!

Tbh i think us single mums and maybe dads are being thrown under the bus. If i get seriously ill my whole family will suffer. But oh well f single parents, maybe that's the plan to kill us all off. Only conclusion I'm coming to with people's opinions and new rules. Im actually s scared i have exposed myself because i keep having to go to the shop as im not allowed to buy enough needed for my house hold.

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 22:40

And i also think its unfair single mums arent priority.

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 22:41

Aswell

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 25/03/2020 22:46

But this is not a time for pulling together and physically supporting each other. The best way we can support each other is by pulling apart. In ordinary times I would be happy caring for someone's child so they can shop but that is a dangerous thing to to right now. As above I said I would support the further restrictions but it takes creative thinking. Instead of caring for the children for the lone parent how about getting extras for them while you shop?? Seeing them as as much in need as the elderly??

Doryhunky · 25/03/2020 22:47

How can I get someone else to do my shopping? And even if I did, with the item restrictions how could
They get their shopping and mine?

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 22:49

I think they need to provide online shopping for single parents just as much as the elderely and self isolating because a single parent can't risk being a sole carer if she gets this illness. Who will take care of my kids should i catch this and be gravely ill with it. Why aren't us single mums getting prioritised too. Sainsburys won't allow me to shop online anymore and other stores are going the same way ie elderly, self isolating or at risk category

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 22:50

Exactly dory its impossible

BeetrootRocks · 25/03/2020 22:54

The good news is this is one branch in IOM (not good news for those on IOM) not Tesco general policy.

macaroniandpizza · 25/03/2020 22:59

The looks im getting when going to the shops are ridiculous, im a single parent and cannot not take my son with me. Dm is a carer for the elderly. Dsis x2 have high risk children and we havent seen each other in weeks due to all this. Granted shopping isnt a family outing for everyone from baby to gran but single parents have to take their children out

KindnessCrusader · 25/03/2020 23:04

You’d simply have to leave them at home, and be as fast as possible

What an absolutely ridiculous suggestion.

RightOnTheEdge · 25/03/2020 23:05

@TheSheepofWallSt thank you for being kind Smile
I'm not usually a worrier and don't usually let things get me down but I think all the angry ranting on my local Facebook page and the mean comments on this site have really got to me this week.
I'm starting to feel really anxious at the thought of going out and I've never felt like this before.

I think I just need to spend some time on the funny memes thread and watching some happy films or something.

Justanotherworkingmom · 25/03/2020 23:11

Completely agree with the policy.

Fed up of trying to adopt social distancing while people let their kids run amock around me and others.

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 23:14

Another oneHmm yeh you agree with it, doesn't solve a mothers worry of her kids starving.....sigh

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 23:15

Those people you refer to, are you trying to bash single mums....

Because couples also have ratbags running a mock too

ALeapOfFaith · 25/03/2020 23:20

HOW MANY MORE TIMES DOES IT NEED TO BE SAID. THIS IS NOT TESCO NATIONAL POLICY, THIS IS ONE SHOP ON IOM!

SapphireSalute · 25/03/2020 23:26

We know that

Sotiredofthislife · 25/03/2020 23:31

Completely agree with the policy.Fed up of trying to adopt social distancing while people let their kids run amock around me and others

What do you suggest an supportrd single parent does?

And you know for a fact every child you encountered in a supermarket was the child of a single parent?

Disgraceful stereotyping

ALeapOfFaith · 25/03/2020 23:39

Well this situation is bad enough without people scaremongering online!

Staff working for Tesco and other retailers are busting their arses at the moment, many also single parents that would like to be at home with their families on 80% pay.

Think before you start bullshit threads putting down companies trying to do their bit to keep things goingAngry

SapphireSalute · 25/03/2020 23:48

Single mums.... or lone parents to be p.c.... are few enough to be an exception.so are irrelevant

But the rest of them? Before we closed there was no supervision in store. Parents had to be shamed into keeping control of their kid

PotholeParadise · 25/03/2020 23:48

Completely agree with the policy.

Fed up of trying to adopt social distancing while people let their kids run amock around me and others.

I read posts like yours, and I think, why should I bother with social distancing for the good of others, when the life I might save could belong to someone who would happily see single parents unable to buy food!

Gah.

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 23:48

Don't think Tesco is being put down here as it's been noted this is one store only. I applaud all the workers from all stores in this crisis, they are doing a remarkable job.

But this post is full of fish wives putting down single mothers or suggesting we should just not go shopping with our children when most single mums don't have that luxury because only one person can go fetch and that's only the mother themselves, can't be leaving minors alone especially babies.
