No children allowed in supermarket

My sister went to Tesco with her toddler and was told no children allowed from next week. Understand this is wise for infection control but what if you're a single parent with tiny kids and can't do online shopping?

Leflic I don't understand your point

You said

'I went to Morrison’s this morning that has a one in one out policy. Security stopped a family with young children coming in and made the parents chose which one wanted to shop and which stayed out to look after the kids.
Couples weren’t allowed in together either. Trolley each, single queue.'

I said yes but this is about single adults not being allowed in with children.

You said no, they weren't letting couples in either.

You don't need two adults in the shop (unless one is a carer etc) whether there are children or not. The spare adult can wait outside, with kids if there are any.

This is about single adults with any children presumably including baby in sling being banned. Totally different. Result is no shopping. Letting 1 adult in, as you state, means shopping still gets done.

Are you missing something or am I.

itsgettingweird · 25/03/2020 18:27

Agree threads like these are depressing.

I'm a LP to a child with a disability who is also a keyworker and has 2 parents on chemo who cannot go out at all (except to hospital - the irony!).

I'm shopping for me and ds and them.

Or should I not be? Because clearly I should be able to leave ds with my neighbours.

Which one?

The one with the disability? The one who's over 70? Or the family downstairs who we aren't meant to mix with due to other rules?

G3m81 · 25/03/2020 18:42

Tesco worker here Grin We've had no briefing of this at my store and I've been to all the managers meetings. There is going to be a limit on how many people can enter the store for social distancing purposes but rest assured Tesco are not discriminating against single parents as a lot of our staff are single parents themselves. All the supermarkets are trying their best during these difficult times and I think a lot of the problem is media scaremongering.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 25/03/2020 18:45

So much stupidity and selfishness on this thread...
I don't want your kids to be running around putting my life at risk. Find someone to look after them
I don’t want my kids to go Find someone to shop for you.
It works both ways, you see?

And I am not even a single parent, just a decent human being.

AmericanAdventure · 25/03/2020 18:55

It goes against government policy. I can't imagine all shops will be able to do this.

No children allowed in supermarket
Clymene · 25/03/2020 19:01

This is another thread of bullshit. Of course if you have young children and you're a single parent you're allowed to take them to the supermarket

BuzzingButterfly · 25/03/2020 19:02

So me and my kids are going to starve to death because supermarkets don’t understand there are single parents with zero other options living in communities that don’t have any community spirit? Brilliant.

AmericanAdventure · 25/03/2020 19:05

No @BuzzingButterfly

See the three posts above.

One is from someone who works at Tesco and says it bullshit. And another showing evidence from the government's website.

Whattheduck · 25/03/2020 19:10

@Ginger1982
I didn’t say I was alright did I . I was saying what options were available in my area and that there could be similar options available in other areas
I’ve been self isolating since last Tuesday and have had to find other ways of getting shopping so only offering alternatives

carly2803 · 25/03/2020 19:11

oh wow. well done tesco... KNOBHEADS.

single mums? no dads around? single families etc who cannotget the support

cannot get an online slot. rediculous

Clymene · 25/03/2020 19:12

ITS NOT TRUE.

FAKE NEWS

BilboBercow · 25/03/2020 19:13

I work for Tesco. This is not company policy, it's a rogue management team who will be getting their arse handed to them by head office because this had made the media. It's a policy that will be reversed quietly in this specific store.
For those suggesting single parents just get someone else to look after their kids or get a friend or neighbor to do their weekly shop: you have absolutely no idea.
I'm a lone parent to a six year old. My mum is dead and I have no siblings. My dad lives 20 miles away and is self isolating. I live in a rough area. The only neighbor I really know is a middle aged male alcoholic who appears to have some learning difficulties.
Tesco has been going out of its way right now to make life easier for customers and do the right thing. This isn't the right thing.

Willow2017 · 25/03/2020 19:25

In normal circumstances, everyone tears into single parents for leaving their children alone to shop even if they're 19.
Now they're supposed to?!

Yes it would be hilarious if the contempt for single parents wasnt so depressing.

Cherrysoup · 25/03/2020 19:33

Madness. My cousin has 3 under 8, her dh works on the rigs. What is she meant to do with them? One is still just a baby. She can’t leave them at home.

Wannabangbang · 25/03/2020 19:34

Thank you bilbo you and your staff are superstars in this crisis. Thank god this isn't real or atleast in all stores

Emmerdaledramaqueen · 25/03/2020 19:43

Wouldn’t be so bad if my child hadn’t been having to talk very loudly about the adults in sainsbury not following the social distancing rules! She clearly had more understanding about distancing herself from shoppers and shop workers than the twats leaning over her to get stuff from shelves rather than giving her a minute to move.
If this is to be an overarching rule from Tesco I won’t be back (and not just because dd can’t be home alone!).

SeperatedSwans · 25/03/2020 19:49

Lone key worker parent for the homeless here.

I give up. I'm trying, I'm trying to balance work and limiting DS in school, I'm trying to survive financially and plan to eventually be unwell, and now this.

Fuck it. I'm done. I'll now reduce my food intake to ensure DS is fed and the food stretches longer and see how we go. I can't cope with the embarrassment of being turned away from a shop.

PotholeParadise · 25/03/2020 19:58

SeperatedSwans It's one branch of Tesco (who are getting bollocked by head office as we speak) and a few MNers being righteous.

Don't worry. It is not going to happen to you.

PotholeParadise · 25/03/2020 20:03

Key point is that this is the Isle of Man who have been the first place to make an arrest for breaking quarantine. They're a tiny island with their own currency, their own legal system and probably terrified of having their medical infrastructure swamped with this.

diddl · 25/03/2020 20:12

So was this one staff member talking bollocks?

I think if there are two adults & kid/s-great idea to ask that just one adult goes in.

Other than that...

flashbac · 25/03/2020 20:18

@SeperatedSwans
"It's one branch of Tesco (who are getting bollocked by head office as we speak) and a few MNers being righteous."

Do you know this for sure? A store in West Yorkshire?

Don't worry. It is not going to happen to you.

Thank you BilboBercow

It's not 'fake news' but it is true of this branch on IOM. it's been stated lots of times on the thread that was where this came from. I found the article including quotes from manager with a quick Google.

I find it really depressing that so many people in this thread are wholly supportive of, essentially, banning children from large supermarkets, at this time.

Single parents are disproportionately in poverty in the UK. To bar them from the shops where food is cheaper is a dick move. And yet here we have poster after poster cheering. Even one who said (essentially and in theory) that children going hungry and dying is worth it for the greater good.

This situation is really exposing some interesting attitudes.

The UK as a society is intolerant of children
And really dislikes single mothers

Remember there will be a lot more single parents on the road ahead. Think about who you are barring from accessing perfectly normal stuff. Supermarkets, food. Corner shops are very expensive and rarely sell things like formula.

It's good this is not policy across the board even if so many people on here, many presumably women with children, would have a ban enacted.

Rosebel · 25/03/2020 20:22

Morrisons and Asda are also asking parents to shop alone but don't think they've actually banned children.
It's very difficult because yes everyone needs food but what about protecting the workers? I bet you'll all be moaning a lot more when your supermarkets are shut because the workers are sick.
Of course management could just throw out unruly children but they along with the rest of the staff are already verbally and physically attacked. Parents who can't control their children are the ones who will scream abuse and that their little darling is just being a child.
