To give myself a grade 6 cut

Flippetydip · 24/03/2020 17:27

I reckon I'm about 4 months away from another hair cut. My hair usually gets cut every 6 weeks and I was due one this week. I'm quite tempted to shave it myself and see what happens. After all, no work meetings, no nights out, no nothing. What could possibly go wrong?

Mumsnet haircut is no good - I don't have enough hair to put into a pony tail. I'm thinking grade 6 on the top and 4 up the sides? That's what I usually do for DH though and I'm not sure I'm wanting his and hers haircuts.... even if we are in this for the long haul. I have my hairdresser on standby for remedy purposes once we're out of lockdown and before my first work meeting. She said it wasn't something she would "recommend" but "needs must" and begged me not to do a grade 1.

I'm considering going to a #8
Shaved my head loads as a skinny young thing but have got fat and old.
DD has begged me not to but I'm very tempted.

My hair was driving me nuts. I have been aiming for a Jennifer Anniston sort of fringe but hated the way it was always getting in the way. Last week I bought a pair of hairdressing scissors and got my DH to cut it straight across, above my eyebrows. I figured that if it was a disaster, who would see it. It's fine, and I feel SO much better.

JaceLancs · 24/03/2020 22:45

We are only weeks away from knowing what everyone’s true hair colour is!

Rowgtfc72 · 24/03/2020 22:55

Think mines probably a 4 or 5 on top and maybe a 3 back and sides. Every intention of doing mine next time I do dhs. I'm still at work but if it's not in a hair net it's in a cycle helmet so noone would know!

AwdBovril · 24/03/2020 23:26

All the hair clippers are out of stock at Boots. All of them. And so many are unavailable at other online shops too... Now I'm going to look like I've got an inebriated hedgehog on my head.

MiniMum97 · 24/03/2020 23:45

Yes we need some pictures!!!

And how does the clippering and then using thinning scissors work?

CrowleysBentley · 25/03/2020 03:54

I did 19yo DD's yesterday. Just below chin length Bob. It looks good.

Today I'll do mine to around shoulder length, though I will ask DD to straighten up the back for me. I might put a fringe in, I haven't had one for a few years. Not brave enough to shave my head, I'm quite fat and worried that I'd look like a potato.

LellyMcKelly · 25/03/2020 04:10

I’ve been doing that MN haircut for years. It takes 5 minutes and is perfect for wavy hair. I cut it longer than the video because I don’t want a fringe.

Flippetydip · 25/03/2020 06:52

Glad everyone else is taking the cut. My natural colour has been grey/brown for some years as I'm allergic to hair dye so that's all good!

I am going to have to take the clippers to mine. My hair is pretty short anyway and needs tidying up at the hairdresser every 3-4 weeks. It's over-long now. Sad

BestIsWest · 25/03/2020 07:00

I would also like to see pictures of what the grades look like if anyone is willing to share.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 25/03/2020 07:25

Watch some YouTube videos ......... Just so you don't dive in and end up hating it!

As I once said to a very expensive hairdresser who'd suggested something new with my hair, it will grow again!
Personally don't think I'll attempt cutting my own.
Yet

Flippetydip · 25/03/2020 07:32

It is only hair - it will grow again (hopefully).

This is mine. I cut it to a 6. It was cut a week ago so has a little growth to it.
I "style" it by rubbing some vo5 Matt clay on my palms and then sort of pulling it away from the parting to flatten it slightly. It takes less than a minute.
Please excuse my red eyes, I can't manage to have a shower without looking like I've been crying. Lol

Can you see the photos? They were showing and now are gone.

DivGirl · 25/03/2020 07:47

Photos worked! I like the grade 6 look - like a fluffy duckling.

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 25/03/2020 07:48

Omg I’m totally going to give the Mumsnet haircut a try! The alternative is to ask DS8 who would still do a better job than DH
Fuck it I’m off for the chop!

Ktjerl you look great, it suits you!

ktjerl · 25/03/2020 07:54

A fluffy duckling? Lol
It wasn't exactly the look I was going for. Ha ha.
Once the clay is on it loses the fluffy aspect though.
Thank you both though.

Flippetydip · 25/03/2020 07:55

@ktjerl - is that grade 6 all over or graduated up the back and sides? It looks fab on you.

Can you get a grade 8 thing for the clippers do you think? Grade 6 is the longest I have and my face shape is wrong for that short.

OP posts:
ktjerl · 25/03/2020 08:04

It's all over. You can get 8's I used to mine cut on an 8 but couldn't get a clean look and it felt too long. There seems to be quite a jump in length from 6 to 8.

TonytheDog · 25/03/2020 08:04

I cut my hair with clippers and I let DS (12) do his this week as no school or barbers for who knows how long. You can get longer clipper combs #8 generally comes with most clippers but you can also get #10 and #12 on Amazon.

ktjerl · 25/03/2020 08:05

Oh I forgot to say the photos are before and after styling.

Rowgtfc72 · 25/03/2020 09:02

Thanks for the photos. Think that means mines more than a 5 on top. Liking the 6 though! Got another couple of weeks till mines unmanageable so think the 6 is the way to go.
Used to have a 3 and 2 at uni but that was 30 yrs ago!
I'm already considered "alternative" for having it this short!

Wigglewaggle01 · 25/03/2020 09:07

I'm very tempted to shave the underneath of my hair so I can still have it long on top but flip it to the side and it'll look like the whole side is shaved IYSWIM.
Would it work on really thick hair do you think?
