Takeaways during lockdown

Do you think takeaways are safe? I’m worried about the packaging but not sure if I am over thinking it!
One of my children have their Birthday tomorrow and would really like a takeaway. Just wanted some thoughts on what people think. If there is any doubt, we’ll stick to jacket potato’s and save the celebrations to a date when this is all over.

Yes a lot of restaurants have gone to take away instead to stay afloat x

Tootletum · 24/03/2020 13:45

Just have a takeaway. Spray the packaging if you're worried or just plate everything up , throw all packaging away and wash hands carefully. Fomites are still much lower transmission than people.

bridgetreilly · 24/03/2020 13:45

Which of these do you think would cover a takeaway:

Shopping for basic necessities such as food and medicine. Shopping trips should be as infrequent as possible

One form of exercise a day such as a run, walk or cycle. This should be done alone or only with people you live with

Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person. This includes moving children under the age of 18 between their parents' homes, where applicable. Key workers or those with children identified as vulnerable can continue to take their children to school

Travelling to and from work, but only where work absolutely cannot be done from home

Thereflex9 · 24/03/2020 13:47

My DD has her birthday tomorrow too, happy birthday to them. I'd imagine they're as safe as any other food right now, there is no evidence to suggest it is being passed on by food and as for packaging they're all following incredibly stringent guidelines. My sister is relying on take aways as cannot get to the shops and no one is willing to help, we live too far away and someone in the family is in the high risk category :(

GoatsDoRome · 24/03/2020 13:47

@bridgetreilly

I’ll play!!

The answer is a) Shopping for basic necessities such as food because the OP is exchanging money in return for food! Do I get a prize?

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 13:47

Takeaways are open but you may not be able to pay cash and you should pre order if you are picking up. They won't let you wait inside.

Thereflex9 · 24/03/2020 13:48

@bridgetreilly we are talking about deliveries... Which are still allowed

Lockheart · 24/03/2020 13:48

@bridgetreilly takeaways have not been closed down - you are still allowed to get food delivered.

Samcarpy92 · 24/03/2020 13:48

@bridgetreilly you know she means delivery stop being pedantic

CleverQuacks · 24/03/2020 13:49

@bridgetreilly Boris Johnson specifically said food delivery was fine.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 13:49

@Thereflex9 local facebook. Even our local bargains group has information for people who need help and volunteers. So does council. Local shops turned to delivering food.
Unless people live in tge middle of nowhere there will be someone to help

Chemenger · 24/03/2020 13:52

According to every news source I’ve seen, while restaurants are closed there is an exception for those offering food delivery and takeaway. See, for example:

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/24/uk-coronavirus-lockdown-rules-what-you-can-and-cannot-do?

Flower1309 · 24/03/2020 13:55

Yes it's fine. If we can go to the supermarket (obviously we have to do that) we can order a takeaway. They're just not taking cash payments. Domino's are doing a no contact delivery they leave it in a safe space, ring the door and step back a safe distance to make sure you've received your order.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 13:56

The point is basically nkt to allow places where people would be in together in larger numbers.
So sitting in a pub. Not ok.
Having pub deliver to your door ring and run. Ok.

Thereflex9 · 24/03/2020 13:56

@BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser wow thank you so much it's not like we haven't tried that... I have been over this on another thread. People are only interested in helping the elderly or vulnerable. Otherwise healthy teenager in a block of flats with coronavirus? Funnily enough, no ones jumping at the chance.

ffswhatnext · 24/03/2020 13:57

We had a take-away the other day.
The dinner conversation was mentioned, someone mentioned burgers (we can make them). My throat is on fire, and I have never been so happy to see a take away as I happily drunk something almost frozen.

A lot of them aren't taking cash.
They are doing contactless delivery. The food was left on the doorstep,
driver knocked and walked away.

Some people take-aways might still be the only choice as stores are stocking up, and food restrictions now in place.

If we were all at home now, a lot of our shopping goes over the restrictions in place. Doing the usual shop now would be impossible and we would be loving takeaways. Plus some shops are putting up prices, and a takeaway is suddenly the cheaper choice.

PumpkinP · 24/03/2020 13:58

It’s my dds birthday tomorrow aswell Sad

We are going to get a take away delivery

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 13:58

@Thereflex9 not even council? That's disgraceful.
I would scour social media for local independent shops. Many here started food deliveries of veg boxes with milk, bread and eggs.

Cissyandflora · 24/03/2020 14:03

@bridgetreilly people just can’t take in the information. They still question what it all means. Pretend it’s all grey and they need to ask on a forum. Because surely their birthday is an exception. So many foolish people it’s scary. Boris will have to spell it out again tonight. But still people will argue that they should be able to take their children out without criticism because they enjoy it. It’s terrifying.

I wish all the people deliberately flouting the rules would be exempt from nhs care when and if they need it. That would free up a lot of beds. They should have a stamp on their head indicating they’ve chosen to take their own risks and will not be taking help from the nhs when they succumb.

Birdy65 · 24/03/2020 14:03

Thank you for the replies. I know I was over analysing, but don’t want to add any increased risk. I guess it’s no different to picking up food and taking it home from a supermarket.
I’ve called the takeaway of choice, and they will take payment over the phone, deliver to the outside of the door and will phone once they are back in the car to let us know it’s there. All sorted. Thank you.

It's not just teens that are getting ignored. I'm hearing a lot about single guys left to just get on with it. I have been chatting to someone, for 2 weeks, I'm the only one who is in contact to see how things are going during self-isolation. If it wasn't for me, he doesn't know where he would be now. I know others who will be in this same situation.

Suicide rates will shoot up during isolation.

I did a very painful cheer and dance when I got CV. Hopefully, it means I will be safe to go out well before 12 weeks is over. Many people are in a vulnerable position for a mountain of reasons. They need support.

Lockheart · 24/03/2020 14:17

@Cissyandflora where did the OP say anything about taking her children out?

There is NO restriction on getting takeaways delivered. Takeaways are still allowed to trade. Planning legislation has been relaxed to allow pubs and restaurants to provide a takeaway service while they're closed.

PotsofChoc · 24/03/2020 14:21

Yes, we’ve had a takeaway. Paid online, delivery driver knocked on door and left it on outdoor step.

PlomBear · 24/03/2020 14:23

Takeaways are still allowed - or they would be shut by the government.

aLilNonnyMouse · 24/03/2020 14:23

Using a website such as just eat or uber eats is fine. They are doing contactless delivery which means you pay online with your card, and the driver rings your doorbell and leaves the food outside for you to come and get.

I'm stuck alone and my disability means I can't cook so I've been ordering every day as I have no other choice.
