To even consider staying in a holiday cottage?

Dreaming69 · 23/03/2020 22:35

This might sound stupid but I have a private cottage booked in the North Yorkshire Moors. Were supposed to be going next weekend. Is there anyway we would still be able to go? It would basically be my family going in our car and effectively moving into another house. We would exercise by doing a walk in the moors so plenty big enough area to practice social distancing. The rest of the time would be in the house but it's better than mine and a change of scenery also!

I know you’re probably gutted OP. I understand as we’ve had our wedding cancelled. But, in such worrying times you just have to suck the mop. It’s shit, but the absolute right thing to stay home, stay safe and keep others safe. The owner may be able to refund or offer another time.

MindatWork · 25/03/2020 19:38

@ToftyAC I know it’s not the point of the thread but I am dying at “suck the mop” Grin

To even consider staying in a holiday cottage?
Lincolnfield · 25/03/2020 19:43

@Dreaming69. Stupid doesn’t even sum it up!

We had a holiday cottage booked for next week as well near Staithes on the Yorkshire coast. There is absolutely NO WAY we can go and neither can you!

Besides breaking the rules - which from tomorrow become legally enforceable by the way so you would be breaking the law - you have no idea who has recently stayed in the cottage - they might be intensive care now for all you know or care.

Rural areas do NOT have great access to medical care, I know, I live in one - so, go ahead, add to the burden.

So you’re driving all the way from wherever and NOT needing any fuel for your car at any point during your jaunt into Yorkshire? You won’t be ‘popping into a local shop’ to stock up on local cheeses or artisan bread?

Stop worrying about the money for Christ’s sake. The lady we’ve booked with owns three small holiday cottages. She’s a divorcee with two children and the cottages are her business and only source of income. I’ve told her to keep my payment as a ‘credit note’ for sometime in the future and if, sadly her business goes under, then so be it.

I didn’t believe so many people in this country could be so fucking stupid and then I read posts like this and realise that yes, they are.

GinPin2 · 25/03/2020 19:46

@Dreaming69 Although correct, I do think a lot of posters have been very unkind and there has been no call for the way in which they have responded. I feel for you.
We too have to accept that a family holiday for the 13 of us ( from Dorset and Somerset) to a Devon holiday home has to be postponed from 3rd April until next year. :( No chance of money back as I never take out insurance for holidays in this country .

The holiday company contacted us to transfer, the day before Boris' announcement. We had contacted them previously, as a son in law and a grandson have asthma, to see what our options were but they would not say. Even now, with 8 days left before we were due to travel, the company have not confirmed a new date. :( Because there are 12 + baby our holiday is costing me £1700 ( my treat because I love having all the family together) so I do hope that we hear from the holiday company soon very soon. Hope you are getting a transfer too. :)

You’ve been ordered to stay home. What don’t you understand?

Abiamber · 25/03/2020 19:53

We own our own caravan on a very small holiday park in North Yorkshire. My daughter and I had gone for the weekend. At 3pm on Sunday there was a knock on our door- site manager telling us that they were instructed to close and we had to leave as soon as possible but definitely by the end of the day. The locals were putting signs on the roadside saying ‘save lives, go home’ not very welcoming but then the local hospital is really small and wouldn’t cope if ‘holidaymakers’ became ill. I’d rather be in my caravan looking at the sea view but fully understand why I can’t be there

Meaniebobeanie · 25/03/2020 19:54

I've had to cancel my holiday to Scotland and could do everything you said. It's not time for holidays. Change the date or get your money back maybe?

Lincolnfield · 25/03/2020 19:57

@GinPin2 - we’re being unkind because the OP indicated that she is/was still intending to go! If she’d said she was disappointed NOT to be going then maybe there would be some sympathy for her.

I live in the Peak District and last weekend we had numpties all over the moors and the Edges. Hathersage, Bakewell and Castleton were crawling with day trippers. Those of us who live here were FRIGHTENED- can’t you understand?

You might be disappointed- we are terrified.

Tashface · 25/03/2020 19:57

Bloody hell people, OP has updated to say she isn't going.

I swear some people think a thread consists of the OP's post and nothing else!

Muncher75 · 25/03/2020 20:02

You are precisely the kind of person that is putting everyone else’s efforts to waste! I am from a holiday area and the local hospital has 22 patients with corona, 19 of these patients are visitors- putting everyone who lives in the area on a back foot for the chance of a bed/ventilator in their home town!
STAY AT HOME you twit!

Karenlucia · 25/03/2020 20:04

I live in Cornwall with hundreds of families who have flocked here to second homes. We have 1 hospital for the whole of Cornwall 12 ICU beds and now loads of people who shouldn’t be here. Currently in that hospital are 8 infected residents and 22 non residents. It’s completely selfish and not fair on the Cornish NHS workers or the residents of Cornwall.
Stay at home means Stay at home.

JCSAR · 25/03/2020 20:04

Are you really that self absorbed that you think the rules don’t apply to you? Millions of people will be missing their holidays because of this, do you think your holiday is more important than anyone else’s? This exact situation has been spoken about and the government have said again and again STAY HOME!!!

SlipSlidin · 25/03/2020 20:05

Call off your dogs you eejits, op said ages ago she’d taken everything on board and wasn’t going. Some people are clearly desperate to give her a kicking.

PeapodBurgundy · 25/03/2020 20:08

Because of people like you, who think that the guidelines don't apply to you, my friend cannot see her mentally ill son.

While the government were asking people nicely to stay in the house as much as possible, visiting was still open at the hospital he's in. Because people didn't listen, and carried on with their day-to-day NON-ESSENTIAL trips out of the house, a lockdown has been enforced. Visiting has been closed, and she cannot see him until it is lifted.

But by all means, go and enjoy your holiday, because obviously you're the exception.

Lincolnfield · 25/03/2020 20:15

@Dreaming69 just caught your update and delighted you’ve taken the messages on board.

The owner of the cottage is just as culpable and at the very least should offer you an alternative week when this is all over.

I overreacted because we have been sick to death of tourists this weekend- not least because of the rubbish they’ve left behind. I take my dogs out at 6.30am - our daily exercise - and since Sunday, we have seen snotty tissues left all over, discarded food wrappers and beer cans and even discarded surgical gloves.

Litter has always been a problem in the summer months but the crap that has been left recently isn’t just unsightly it’s bloody dangerous. Snotty tissues? Why not just lob a few hand grenades at us?

Oscarsdaddy · 25/03/2020 20:23

@spababe

That’s unbelievable too but caravaners are almost as dense as cyclists and the packs they were riding around in on Sunday

MrFaceyRomford · 25/03/2020 20:23

STAY AT HOME!

SlipSlidin · 25/03/2020 21:08

Do any of you even bother to read anyone’s posts other than your own?

Dreaming69 · 25/03/2020 21:09

Jeez I thought this was done with now! Some people need to, you know, actually READ THE THREAD before giving abuse.
I'm not going. I wasn't definitely going to go anyway. I was wrong to consider it. I've already said these things. I am not a monster I genuinely couldn't see how I would be putting anyone at risk by driving from my home for less than 2 hours to a self contained cottage bringing with me everything we needed so no need to go to shops in the area and buy anything. Just in case any of you still think I'm going, I'M NOT!!! The only thing I hadn't thought of, which I now realise would have been a big problem, is the capacity of local hospitals.
Oh and finally, the owner has seen sense and has cancelled the booking for us to use the credit later this year....hopefully!
And for the person who mentioned about people losing jobs over all of this, yes I'm well aware, both me and my partner have lost ours which is part of the reason why I couldn't afford to lose the money in the first place.

OP posts:
onegiftedgal · 25/03/2020 21:14

Of course you can't go - you should be staying at home ie IN YOUR HOME! Surely your insurance would cover this in this situation?

DesLynamsMoustache · 25/03/2020 21:15

Twas ever thus on MN. People see a thread with 300 messages yet still don't bother reading past the OP because they're so desperate to share their 'wisdom' even though a) it's been said 50000 times and b) it's totally irrelevant as the situation is now resolved.

Juliehooligan · 25/03/2020 21:24

Wow how selfish can you get, no one can go on holiday, if you become ill whilst you are there, you will put a massive strain on the hospitals that cannot cope with their own residents let alone a self entitled numpty on holiday.

knickerbockerglory33 · 25/03/2020 21:27

I know the advice is unanimous, but just in case you haven't got the hint yet.

Please please please stay at home.

I live in a very touristy area surrounded by holiday cottages and I cannot get over how people think it is acceptable to come here for a holiday given the circumstances.

However remote, there are still neighbours and some may be vulnerable, you DO NOT KNOW. As others have mentioned, what about the cleaning staff and maintenance staff that are having to go out, against their better judgement, to clean before and after? what about the gates you touch and the shops you visit when there?

Please have some consideration for others, as opposed to just caring about your holiday, and heed advice to STAY AT HOME.

Covid-19 does not spread by itself, people spread it.

GinnyStrupac · 25/03/2020 21:40

READ THE THREAD OR OP'S UPDATES BEFORE POSTING - OP IS NOT GOING

All the best, OP. I hope you get to enjoy your holiday, albeit delayed, and that your job situation works out. Most of all, stay well Flowers

Now we just need to get the foolish, selfish and entitled daytrippers and 'exercisers' to stay away.
