To even consider staying in a holiday cottage?

This might sound stupid but I have a private cottage booked in the North Yorkshire Moors. Were supposed to be going next weekend. Is there anyway we would still be able to go? It would basically be my family going in our car and effectively moving into another house. We would exercise by doing a walk in the moors so plenty big enough area to practice social distancing. The rest of the time would be in the house but it's better than mine and a change of scenery also!

juliej00ls · 25/03/2020 18:12

STAY AT HOME. Ffs

Oscarsdaddy · 25/03/2020 18:14

What a stupid post, can’t even believe the OP hasn’t got the common sense to answer their own question

Unbelievable!

Scarriff · 25/03/2020 18:16

She doesn't really get it.

keeptheaspidistra · 25/03/2020 18:19

Yes YABVU and ridiculous. And selfish. Why don't people seem to grasp what is going on?

Home42 · 25/03/2020 18:29

I live in a small Welsh village. Similarly to most UK rural areas we have limited hospital provision (8 critical care beds in our only regional hospital). If a load of tourists turn up they risk bringing virus to us and also ending up in one of our 8 critical care beds! This happened last weekend with 1000s turning up to climb Snowdon where normally there’s be a handful of locals.

Don’t go to Yorkshire and add an additional drain to their limited rural resources. There are not enough beds anywhere but we stand a better chance if we all stay where we are supposed to be and using our normal provided resources.

PotteryLottery · 25/03/2020 18:31

My pal's neighbour invited her to an outdoor meditation session today, 2m apart.

Needless to say it was canx.

gizmo · 25/03/2020 18:32

Blimey @Dreaming69 you have got a kicking. I don't think there is any call for the level of abuse you've received.

I am a holiday home owner (in North Yorkshire funnily enough). I have closed our house for April, will almost certainly have to do the same for May. Financially this is a calamity but there you go, there are more important issues to deal with.

Do you have holiday insurance? The refund issue is very difficult. 90% of our bookings are through an agency who are offering no refunds, just an opportunity for guests to move their holiday dates to later in the year/next year.

At this time of year most holiday home owners have no cash reserves at all, so repaying/refunding is a real stretch if you're dealing with the owners direct. Those of us with agencies aren't much better off: my agency is refusing to hand over any of the money for the holidays booked for April, even though the guests have paid it to them. So much for 'we're all in it together' Hmm

When this is all over we will all need a holiday. Whether I'll still be in business is touch and go, but even so, perhaps the other folks on this thread might consider taking a break in the UK and supporting thousands of small businesses trying to do the right thing?

ladynyland · 25/03/2020 18:34

Stop putting extra pressure on rural areas and do as you are asked !! STAY AT HOME

csigeek · 25/03/2020 18:34

For the love of god, no. Do not go.
Good lord how are we still here????

randomchatter · 25/03/2020 18:43

Just visualised a bunch of locals with pitch forks - in monochrome!

Seriously, stay at home.

Michellelovesizzy · 25/03/2020 18:46

Lol

ffswhatnext · 25/03/2020 18:47

@Dreaming69
I'm not going to give you the usual stay at home. You've made the right decision.
If the owner is still adamant it can go ahead, find a way to gently drop in things like feedback, word of mouth etc.

Owners need to start thinking about when this ends. If he's flexible of course this is the right thing and I'm sure you'd leave him fab feedback, and even consider going back. Now, however, not only would you not be going back, in conversations talking about where to stay, well I would avoid X.

It's rigid behaviour that will close a lot of people down permanently. As mad as it sounds when things go back to normal. Guess what a lot of people will be doing? Booking a few days away. Getting that long overdue hair cut. Getting more work on the tattoo etc. Things that make us feel like us. That makes us feel better. That help us in some way. And people will remember crap CS and take their custom elsewhere.

Janleverton · 25/03/2020 18:50

Go back to the owner and say you want a refund. See what they say. If they say no, then i would leave a pretty dire review. We have a holiday home and have cancelled and refunded all bookings for March, April and May so far, and we’re communicating with the later bookings. The last thing I would want on my conscience is sending folk down to an area with very limited NHS resources. Partly for their own safety as the mood against holidaymakers is very dark at the moment (understandable when some are behaving like Easter holidays have come early). Basically we e written the year off in our minds, big financial hit. But looking around I don’t know anyone who isn’t suffering in some financially at the moment.

spababe · 25/03/2020 18:53

The police have been stopping caravans and camper vans coming down the M5 to check if they live in Devon or Cornwall. If they are en route to a holiday they are being told to turn around and go home.

Rachel1874 · 25/03/2020 18:54

Can't believe you are even thinking about it/asking.

TheoneandObi · 25/03/2020 18:55

Ditto. Holiday let owner here. The ones booked through an agent are being handled there and people are being offered credit or refunds. The few long standing repeat guests I have I'd offered refunds to.
It's an impossible
Situation for everyone and we just have to make it easy for ppl to cancel travel
Plans. There may also be help down the line for us.

Em1003 · 25/03/2020 18:56

@dreaming69

Im so glad to see your staying at home
Re the person lettinh the cottage make sure you keep all the letters/emails/texts sent and received and if she refuses to either refund or move the holiday you will be able to take her to small claims or have the money refunded after this crap is over as I'm sure you will not be the only one in this kind of situation. So hopefully Boris will have a ruling about the refunds or rebooking soon
The most Important thing is to keep all messages and only talk to her via written messages/email etc

Chattercino · 25/03/2020 18:58

Perhaps you need to listen again to Boris's announcement...stay at home, don't leave the house unless for food or essentials.
A holiday isn't either Angry

GlitterMagicPompom · 25/03/2020 19:03

Hi OP, we were in the same boat i.e, had a cottage booked. But as soon as the PM announced the stricter measures, the owner of the cottage got in touch and offered us either a refund or to rebook later in the year. And this is what I would expect for you too. Can you raise this again with the owner via email? Keep a record of all communication. Please highlight the government’s directive stating that travelling to holiday cottages is deemed unnecessary travel. If no joy, do you have travel insurance?
I hope you get your money back. You have made the right decision to stay home. Good luck!

Sittingonthedockofthebay · 25/03/2020 19:06

Stay home - how could you even consider endangering others for the sake of a change of scenery. Twit.

JESUS FUUUUCKING CHRIST!!!! Are you for real!? That it took you 9 pages of respondes to eventually decide not to go. Its not about the money! It's about folks lives. I'm meant to start a South East Asia trip on Saturday and haven't got my money back but I really don't care as long as fol stay alive. And oh BTW... It is also a lot of money to me as a single parent with a mortgage. But hey... Would rather folk didn't die. Also... Haven't you considered the amount of people who are now losing their jobs... Its people like you who are responsible for the stricter measures, the spread and the anger from people like myself as I live in a national park in Scotland which was over run by idiots at the weekend! JEEEESSSUUUUUSS!!!
