Please don't put a rainbow in your window!

For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon. While it may have been used a symbol originally by Christians and then by other groups, it is ludicrous to suggest that putting a rainbow in your window is objectively offensive. I’m sorry for what you personally have gone through, but as an image this belongs to all of humanity.

Zogtastic · 23/03/2020 13:02

@elQuintoConyoWhat would you rather they drew? A minion?Covid itself? Joe Wicks star-jumping?

BurtonHouse · 23/03/2020 13:02

Get over yourself

Zogtastic · 23/03/2020 13:02

Oh dear - bold writing fail!

Walkthedinosauuuuur · 23/03/2020 13:02

I would say go home but I guess you're already there

Crazybunnylady123 · 23/03/2020 13:02

Wow! Op would love the nursery I’m planning it’s full of rainbows, fluffy clouds and unicorns.
I have a cute rainbow night light that glows, a rainbow door hook. I’m even cross stitching a rainbow in the birth sampler I’m making.
Kids like rainbows, I like rainbows, it’s pretty and colourful. My other dd has a woodland animal room wonder if that’s offensive to someone Hmm

Greysparkles · 23/03/2020 13:03

I think the OP is missing her irony chip.

Stop trying to oppress my children by dictating what picture they can or can't put in the window.

Walkthedinosauuuuur · 23/03/2020 13:03

I don't even understand why you're threatened, have you explained?

FreakStar · 23/03/2020 13:04

Stop making something positive into something negative! Anybody who feels bad when they see a rainbow has serious issues!

Death threats and job losses? You must have been seriously getting on people's nerves for that to happen!

AndHarry · 23/03/2020 13:04

As someone who had to get the police involved over GC activism - nah. I’ve got DD’s rainbow in the window. It’s pretty.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 23/03/2020 13:04

Ruffle I know exactly where you're coming from and agree it's been hijacked by vocal, powerful and well funded organisations to silence women. If any posters don't know what your referring to an hour or two spent on FWR if you've time during self isolation/social distancing will show you, if they wanted to find out. I get of course life's gone slightly to shit and it may not be too of the to do list.

Whilst we're not doing rainbows we might to do a weekly or maybe every few days, piece of window art such as a greetings poster, maybe a joke, that kind of thing. It'll be fun thinking of different ways to decorate it.

Will serve a similar purpose but means I can avoid a symbol which I believe is increasingly placing the T above all other groups, at a cost to women and girls.

MistyIsland · 23/03/2020 13:04

Wow what utter shite I’m reading from the op

Guess what I’m going to get my kids to decorate my house in their really badly drawn rainbows 🌈 🌈🌈

Seriously op get a bloody grip

Conrad79 · 23/03/2020 13:04

Crazybunnylady123 nursery sounds gorgeous Smile

Sparklingplasters · 23/03/2020 13:04

Schools across the country have sent DC home with these?!

PlugholePencil · 23/03/2020 13:04

I don’t actually like the rainbow idea because groups of parents from nursery have arranged to met up together and do organised walks to go find rainbows. They are sharing their roads on the WhatsApp group and times to meet up.
I made myself very unpopular by stating this goes against social distancing and defeated the point of shutting nursery if everyone is going to meet up to walk the streets together.
We haven’t put a rainbow up because of this.

Bbq1 · 23/03/2020 13:05

Please can someone explain to.me why the rainbow is upsetting the LGBT community? I thought they loved it. His does it oppress women?I genuinely don't get it

I hate the way the Rainbow has been hijacked and think it's a lovely idea to paint one and put it in the window.

Roostersmum2 · 23/03/2020 13:05

Please don't turn something positive for children to do into something depressing. They are rainbows, for children by children.

Pishposhpashy · 23/03/2020 13:05

Ffs get a grip. Sincerely, a GC feminist.

noun.
An arch of colours visible in the sky, caused by the refraction and dispersion of the sun's light by rain or other water droplets in the atmosphere.

The end.

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 13:06

and no to answer a pp i don't think genderists 'win' if people like me don't put up a rainbow. I think they've won anyway.

There was a thread here just before coronavirus where lots of L & B women and GC were describing how horrible rainbow flags on buildings made them feel after 4 years of being silenced and threatened on SM and in RL. Whoever started the campaign really wanted kids to paint rainbows - we don't know who or why but we do know schools and other youth based facilities have been made to spout utter dangerous rainbow-branded nonsense about 'gender' for years and that children have been excluded and teachers sacked for not accepting it.

whiplashy · 23/03/2020 13:06

oh ffs don’t be ridiculous, it’s not a rainbow flag, it’s a badly drawn rainbow made by a child

2020bye · 23/03/2020 13:06

This is one of the most unhinged things I’ve ever read, even by mumsnet standards Grin

Thanks for the laugh!
