For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

I love rainbows. As a child, the world is magical, fresh and new!

I remember a couple of stories I used to read when I was little. One was called "the last slice of rainbow" where a little boy helped the wind to remember a song and he got his wish granted of a rainbow of his very own.
The second was 3 girls deciding their princess names, we had princess golden wing, princess starlight and princess rainbow.
Mariah Careys Rainbow album was my favourite and got me through some pretty crappy times growing up.
The first time my little boy saw a rainbow he said "wow! That's amazing mummy! Can I have one?" The look of awe on his face was amazing.

I have nothing but fond memories of rainbows. They are almost magical.

So, no. Is your answer. I shall paint my whole house in rainbow should I ever feel so Inclined.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 23/03/2020 19:34

Jesus Christ OP, you're ridiculous. If you don't want to see the scary rainbowS

STAY THE HELL AT HOME AS YOU'VE ASKED

Problem solvd

Matildathehun77 · 23/03/2020 19:46

I'm a member of the LGBT+ community and we like rainbows, not sure what the problem is. Children also like rainbows because they're colourful. Lots of other people see rainbows as a symbol of hope...... nobody owns the rainbow.

shinynewapple2020 · 23/03/2020 19:47

@RuffleCrow sorry I don't understand why is a rainbow a symbol of oppression for women? I thought it was a positive symbol for the LBGT community?

What about the recent fashion for rainbows on clothing ? Or was that something deeper I missed, I thought they just replaced the stars which were on everything?

And puppies?? What's wrong with puppies?

AnotherMurkyDay · 23/03/2020 19:49

In the Bible it is a sign of hope, of new beginnings and of Gods covenant never again to wipe out most of humanity with a flood (Noah's ark) I think it seems fitting tbh

Maybe next you can head over to the ttc after pregnancy loss threads and talk shit to them about rainbows 🙄

Please don’t encourage her

Gazelda · 23/03/2020 19:51

This thread has made me sad and angry in equal measure.

Sad that something so natural and innocent could cause so much upset to an individual

And angry that anyone could even think about suggesting something so natural and innocent should not be drawn by children as a symbol of hope and optimism.

OP, I'm sorry if the rainbows have distressed you. But I fervently hope that this thread has not deterred anyone from letting their DC put a rainbow in their front window to cheer passers by.

BusySittingDown · 23/03/2020 19:59

Only read the first page but it's annoyed me and I have to post.

ODFO, children are drawing them as a symbol of hope. It's something pretty to look at and something for them to draw while they're being homeschooled.

I went for a walk with DDs before (to blow the cobwebs off, keeping distance from anybody obv) and we made a game of seeing how many we could spot, seeing who could spot them first.

It's not all about you!

MovingBriskyOn · 23/03/2020 19:59

We need a picture @SomethingBlue22

Lweji · 23/03/2020 20:04

sorry I don't understand why is a rainbow a symbol of oppression for women? I thought it was a positive symbol for the LBGT community?

Now it's a flag for evil transactivists, I think.
Is that it? I have to say that the OP wasn't too clear about it.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 23/03/2020 20:07

In my area there is going to be a different picture every week. This week is rainbows

SistemaAddict · 23/03/2020 20:09

And this is why we are where we are currently with women's and children's rights. Or lack thereof.

tinseltitsandlittlegits · 23/03/2020 20:10

If putting a rainbow in my window keeps my child happy at this uncertain time then I will.

Lizziesbusy · 23/03/2020 20:11

OP You say you want to see something that doesn’t remind you of something negative.

In that case, can I please have absolutely every human in a wheelchair or using crutches please, so I don’t feel reminded of how excluded I am now?

Ta muchly 😘

Nonnymum · 23/03/2020 20:15

This is for the children. A rainbow is a magical colourful thing for them and a symbol of hope. Showing after the rain the sun will shine and there might be a pot of gold.
Once this is over I think our children will have an even bigger mental health problem than they do now. If letting them draw or colour a rainbow and display it helps them then please just let them.
I'm very sorry for your bad experience OP but surely you know that these children are displaying their rainbows in hope not hate?

Aridane · 23/03/2020 20:18

And this is why we are where we are currently with women's and children's rights. Or lack thereof.

Yes, those pesky children with their coloured pencils

BubblyBarbara · 23/03/2020 20:19

I thought rainbows were a positive thing for the gays, they even have them painted on the police cars in West Hollywood as a sign of solidarity with them

Port1aCastis · 23/03/2020 20:23

What on earth have little children painting rainbows have to do with women's rights, they haven't said they are taking rights away from anyone FFS
Lighten up and leave the children alone

This has to be the snowflakiest thing I've ever read.

I don't like it SO EVERYONE ELSE MUST STOP.

Nope. It's your sensibilities that's the problem here.

Give your head a wobble and then have a word with yourself.

JasonBrun · 23/03/2020 20:25

My god this thread took a sharp left turn at logic land. Wtf is wrong with puppies?!?! As an ambassador for the GC feminists out in the wider mumsnet you are really letting the cat out of the bag here. (Are cats allowed?!)
