For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

In the most un-sarcastic tone I can muster - find a safe space and go there? The world isn’t going to change, kids are still going to paint rainbows and we all have more important things to worry about.
Sorry it’s made you feel bad though.

JasonBrun · 23/03/2020 14:09

Lololol

Cardiff76 · 23/03/2020 14:10

Yes it’s a female only group! The girls are aged 5-7! Dear me, of all the things to get worked up about right now, this is not really it! As a pp has rightly pointed out, the rainbow means many things to many people! It’s cheering the kids up, it’s not a flipping swastika!

LaurieMarlow · 23/03/2020 14:10

I wasn’t planning to put rainbows in the window, but I need a craft project for the afternoon and this sounds perfect. Thanks for the idea OP Grin

My personal feeling is that suddenly we're in a situation where it's difficult to deny that science matters and biology is real. And then suddenly someone somewhere starts a social media campaign to get kids painting a symbol that has sadly become synonymous with science-denial and experimenting on children with untested drugs. Coincidence, right

But to what end? Even if we go along with you that this is a conspiracy. What's the end point? What does this campaign of rainbows in windows achieve?

You made more sense when I thought you were just a narcissist (there's a high cross over between narcissists and conspiracy theorists. You know something the rest of the world doesn't. You feel more than a little bit special, eh?)

Ohtherewearethen · 23/03/2020 14:12

Sadly a lot of women have been threatened with death and torture by males covered in rainbows

An awful lot more women have been actually killed by men wearing clothes. So do you find clothes in general triggering?

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 23/03/2020 14:12

The rainbow flag has been used a sign of the Peace Movement since 1961. Which is lovely.

lovemydog301 · 23/03/2020 14:14

Genuine question - because I want to understand. Why is this an issue for women? What have the LGBT community done wrong?

Thank you.

Pimmsypimms · 23/03/2020 14:14

My ds has drawn a rainbow and we've put it in the window. He's now really looking forward to getting out of the house and seeing if he can see any in other windows. It's good that they've got a little challenge to look forward to in such a shitty, shitty situation. I'll be keeping ours in our window.

checkoutchick22 · 23/03/2020 14:15

Good grief...
Who will we offend next week, when we do bears???

thecatschampagne · 23/03/2020 14:15

Really want some skittles now.

user1333796 · 23/03/2020 14:15

I'm a gender critical feminist. My kids wear a LOT of rainbows. Our playroom is rainbow themed. We have rainbow posters and rainbow toys. Ironically, rainbow clothes are extremely popular with gender critical parents who don't like all pink for girls and blue and grey for boys and dislike stereotypical slogans. Parents who like retro unisex clothes, like Little Bird and ethical brands such as Frugi, Molo, SMAFOLK, Polarn O Pyret, Maxomorra, Little Green Radicals. It is absolutely NOT just a BGST logo, please don't make it so.

KarmaStar · 23/03/2020 14:16

Wtaf are you talking about?
I've seen children in the park very early this morning drawing rainbow 🌈 trails and rainbow pictures.
Let's let them be children and enjoy their rainbows and unicorns .

Rabblemum · 23/03/2020 14:17

This is odd. Rainbows are everywhere, you can’t go around being offended by them. These are rainbows drawn by children to help through a bad time, how beautiful.

Fernie6491 · 23/03/2020 14:17

For goodness sake, nobody mention Judy Garland
or 'The Wizard of Oz'.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 23/03/2020 14:17

OP I think you're getting an unfair bashing on here and unnecessary sarcasm.
Look after yourself and DC Thanks

Spud I haven't been on the board for a few weeks so I'm not familiar with that discussion. Don't be put off by one thread though as there's so much good stuff there.

Canshopwillshop · 23/03/2020 14:17

Oh just shut up OP! Jeez, most of us are busy worrying about the even bigger shit happening. If small kids get some enjoyment out of it why would you begrudge it?

chipsandgin · 23/03/2020 14:17

Eh? Bloody hell, you would have had a fit of the vapours at the Pride festival I went to last year (which was lovely, joyful, inclusive and shows what incredible strides our society has made in reducing bigotry and intolerance). I’m a white, middle class, middle aged, straight woman and was welcomed with open arms by everyone there. I think you might have twisted views on what constitutes oppression OP & it’s not the ‘loss of our spaces’ - there aren’t perverts around every corner who want to watch you try on a jumper in M&S nor knife wielding Doctors intent on cutting people’s willies off specifically to piss you off. You aren’t being ‘silenced’ it’s just your views are batshit and thankfully in a tiny minority - we can hear you, we just don’t like what you’re saying. Also there are bigger problems in the world right now, we’re in the midst of the Apocalypse..

As for rainbows in windows being bad, ffs, here’s a lovely rainbow coloured grip 🌈, sounds like you need it!

Also 😂 to the pp who said: “if I can’t put one in my window can I put one in my pocket”. Brilliant!
🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈💕

Off to paint rainbows with DS, lovely idea, thanks OP :)

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 14:18

A lot of really kind people on MN putting up lovely kind rainbows to make everyone happy in these difficult and then engaging in a horrible, sweary pile-on because i've explained that for me, they're a previously nice symbol that's been corrupted to intimidate women and children who disagree. And that i personally feel uncomfortable about some anonymous person deciding that all children should paint them and display them in their windows. I think that says more about the character of those who are endorsing this craze than i ever could.

Oh stop talking bollocks. You're not doing GC feminism any favours!

WhenYouveAFirstInEnglish · 23/03/2020 14:19

I’m sorry this has really made me giggle.

To think that the likes of Selina Todd, Maya Forstater, Suzanne Moore, Julie Bindel, the brave women of Get The L Out who lay down in front of a crowd of hostile men whilst being booed, Maria Maclachan who refused to call her attacker “she” whilst being admonished by a judge, Posie Parker who gives two shits about precisely no fucker, Lucy Masoud who fought for women’s rights in the FBU tooth and nail, and countless other properly brave women, being triggered or in any way upset by a tiny child’s drawing of a rainbow... nah, mate.

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 14:20

And i'm quite happy not to advertise that i have young dcs at home as society breaks down, personally.
