Mumsnet please remove scaremongering threads

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 11:10

In the last 24 hours people have started threads about the banks failing, the water supply being polluted and now a thread about rationing by Christmas.

Mumsnet can I PLEASE ask you to zap these threads. Unless the posters have credible evidence for their claims it's clear they are scaremongering. You should not be encouraging sick individuals who get their kicks from frightening people. On the one hand we have this crud and on the other vulnerable posters are writing about how worried they are. There is a direct connection between the two.

Agreed. These threads could really upset people who are struggling

StuckBetweenDarknessAndLight · 23/03/2020 11:11

Yes I agree. I've been limiting my time on here because I'm finding some of the thread titles difficult.

WorraLiberty · 23/03/2020 11:13

Maybe the threads are being started by people who are struggling, rather than being sick individuals getting their kicks?

Either way I agree, they should be deleted, especially if they're not even in the Coronavirus topic that others have hidden.

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 11:16

@WorraLiberty That's possible. But even if they are started by people who are struggling, they could upset other vulnerable posters.

PepePig · 23/03/2020 11:16

Can we not wrap everyone up in cotton wool? If you're struggling then spending time on a Coronavirus sub forum isn't going to help. You need to take responsibility for your anxiety.

People can post about what they like. If it's total bullshit it'll be removed, anyway. But we can't have every thread being policed to the extent if it mentions anything upsetting it's removed.

It's a pandemic. People need to know the cold, hard truth and start taking it seriously. Now really isn't the time for everyone's sensitivities to come out. We're literally being asked to stay at home. Not go on the front line of a fucking war and get shot at.

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 11:17

@PepePig

It isn't the cold hard truth that banks will fail etc.

You've missed the point.

OP posts:
PepePig · 23/03/2020 11:21

Sucking,

I literally just said any of the bullshit threads would be removed regardless. So I have not missed the point.

It also doesn't take anyone with half a brain to decipher that that's an antagonistic thread. People need to take responsibility for themselves and stop relying on others 24/7. You are aware that Mumsnet staff also have families to worry about?

ThunderPython · 23/03/2020 11:22

Please do.

I'm on week 2 of self isolation. I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder. I'm really really struggling today.

I have come off all social media, I'm only sourcing info from the BBC and I'm not watching the news.

I'm so low today, I've been trying so hard not to be.

Mumsnet is my go-to for a bit of chat, discussion, light relief right now.

I've reported one scaremongering thread this morning.

I would just switch off, but I feel so isolated it's my link to the rest of the world right now.

fikel · 23/03/2020 11:22

Too much unnecessary stuff out there

Buster72 · 23/03/2020 11:22

The inability to think about the future is what got us here. Serious economist think that the slow down economically will be more difficult to recovers from than the immediate impact of the virus.
If it frightens you then don't engage but don't seek to stifle other conversation

ThunderPython · 23/03/2020 11:23

God that sounds dramatic and self pitying. Sorry.

SuckingDieselFella · 23/03/2020 11:28

@PepePig people who are already upset may not be thinking straight. It isn't the case that they don't have half a brain. That's an unnecessary comment.

Any social media provider has a responsibility. Even facebook has stepped up to this responsibility.

@ThunderPython

You are why I started this thread. Look after yourself.

ThunderPython · 23/03/2020 11:32

Thanks OP x

LottieBees19 · 23/03/2020 11:32

Please if you suffer from anxiety come off social media. It doesn’t help.

widdioisright · 23/03/2020 11:37

The rubbish people post is mind boggling.

I reported the most awful scaremongering thread the other day,it was not removed as people need to let their feelings out!!

They should be removed as they invoke mass hysteria.

caz114 · 23/03/2020 11:41

I've just been on a cancelled thread, where some people were complaining that the thread was scaremongering.
I didn't believe that it was and was having a sensible debate about the topic.
what happened to free speech??

If you don't like the topic please do not engage.

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2020 11:42

I’ve not seen those threads. But put then in CV topic then people can hide topic.

ThunderPython · 23/03/2020 11:43

If you don't like the topic please do not engage.

Oh, is that all it takes. Silly me 🙄

WorraLiberty · 23/03/2020 11:43

I have come off all social media, I'm only sourcing info from the BBC and I'm not watching the news.

But Mumsnet is social media.

ThunderPython · 23/03/2020 11:44

Thanks for nitpicking Worra. Helpful.

ThunderPython · 23/03/2020 11:46

But yes, I think it's best to remove this unnecessary hysteria and subsequent unpleasantness from my vision. It can't be what I need it to be right now, which is my problem.

Adios, see you on the other side!

Stay healthy people x

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2020 11:46

Are the people posting concerned it will happen and seeking clarity? They shouldn’t be shut down if that’s what they need to feel less anxious.

WorraLiberty · 23/03/2020 11:47

There's no need for the sarcasm ThunderPython.

If social media is distressing you, you do need to consider coming off of all of it for your own sake.

caz114 · 23/03/2020 11:47

@ThunderP
Isn't that all it takes?

daisypond · 23/03/2020 11:48

If you don’t want to read threads that you think are scaremongering, then block them. It would be irresponsible for MN to block them for those of us who are try to take some responsibility and be informed..
