Why are MN still moving CV threads?

NellyGrace · 22/03/2020 09:16

This is something that affects us all now. Not just an annoyance.

Supposedly we are in this altogether.

Why is Mumsnet still moving Coronavirus threads to health?

We all need to be aware. It is irresponsible of MN to be hiding these conversations away.

OP posts:
CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 22/03/2020 12:33

Everyone thinks they have a hot take, so many threads with the same shit over and over.. yawn

Samcro · 22/03/2020 12:40

there are always posters on mn who think the "rules" don't apply to them.
who think you are bad if you hide topics like feminsm or not the CV one.
yet lots of us come on mn to cheer up.
I am in a position where I don't know when I will I don't know when I will see my adult dd who lives in a care home again.
really don't need to see 100000000000 threads about how children will suffer from not going to play with their friends.
so I hid the topic, im scared enough without reading the mass hysteria.

lljkk · 22/03/2020 12:53

It's nice to have a (mostly) cv-free zone!!

AngeloMysterioso · 22/03/2020 13:10

If I want to read Coronavirus threads, I will go to the Coronavirus topic.

It really is that simple.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 22/03/2020 14:00

Maybe because some of us would prefer to get Coronavirus information from a reputable source (BBC / NHS) and use Mumsnet for more lighthearted relief?

This.
I'm not ignorant of the virus, I'm staying in.
It's all over the news though and I prefer to get my info from there.
Some of the threads on here aren't news, they're just panic inducing, scare mongering we're all doooooomed type posts.
Which helps no-one, mental health is important too.

BacklashStarts · 22/03/2020 14:03

They should move them. They are about cv. Active convos is 99% cv and everyone knows there is a cv topic. Nothing is being hidden. But there is still space to think about other things and if you want to do that you should need to wade through a load of cv posts in the wrong place.

lazylinguist · 22/03/2020 14:14

The problem with them all being out in Health is that many posters and readers don’t realise they are there and do miss the discussions.

What nonsense. Firstly, anyone who looks at MN will know there's a coronavirus section, so they can look there, pkys tgey are filling up most of Active Convos. Secondly, why on earth would you think it's sooo important for people to see all the gazillions of chatty, argumentative and possibly factually inaccurate coronavirus threads on a parenting website when there is plenty of proper information all over the news and reliable websites?

And frankly, saying that people should be constantly exposed to all these (often unhelpful) threads even if they have MH problems or health anxiety 'because it affects us all' is ridiculous.

Gingaaarghpussy · 22/03/2020 14:39

I'm agoraphobic so self isolating is not a problem for me. What increases my anxiety most is, the panic buying.
The only newspaper I read is my local one, the only Facebook page I go to is my local one.
Mumsnet for me is escapism, sometimes its difficult to tell from a title what is being asked.

pitlochrypat · 22/03/2020 14:44

But the fact that there are so many threads about it surely indicates you are in a minority - most people do want to talk about it.

Then they can go to the dedicated topic. It would take hours to hide all the covid threads. In this last two weeks we have had to deal with my father's death, the cancellation of my DS's graduation and remaining time at university, being unable to go to my father's funeral because of travel and isolation restrictions, having to stop planning his memorial service because who knows when we will be able to hold it, dealing with being a key worker, my mother now having symptoms of Covid ('luckily' we've not seen her for over a fortnight) and the stress of being in a vulnerable group.

MN is where I come for escapism.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/03/2020 14:46

They aren’t ‘hidden away’ - the Coronavirus section is massive, and if you look at the ‘Last hour’ threads, they are the single biggest set of threads.

Much better to keep them all together in one place, so people who want the information or to join the discussion can do, and people who what to find other things on here don’t have to wade through eleventy-million CV threads.

Yes, coronavirus is very important at the moment, but life has got to go on, and there is NOTHING wrong with wanting to discuss other things or even find more lighthearted topics.

thatgingergirl · 22/03/2020 15:00

Threads about CV should be in the Health/CV board. I know it is there - have ploughed through a number of the threads. I'm not in Ireland, but a broadcast by Leo Varadkar was recommended on a couple of threads and I watched it. What I took from it was that I should be careful to get my information on CV from trusted sources. I've decided that MN isn't one of those.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 22/03/2020 15:07

YABVVVU

Why do you (meaning anyone who posts on CV outside the topic) think your opinion is so absolutely amazing and groundbreaking that you must push it on everyone who has chosen not to read the topic for it? (especially those of you who use a bland title without any warning it is more of the same!)

You do know MN isn't the only website available, and there are calm, factual and informative sites we can read when we want information?

MNHQ have clearly said there are some instances where cv intersects with a specific topic and they are leaving those in situ. But judging by the huge number of posts being moved every day, they are the exception.

iVampire · 22/03/2020 15:10

‘ It is irresponsible of MN to be hiding these conversations away.’

They’re not

They’re putting them into the most active part of MN, in response to popular request.

pitlochrypat · 22/03/2020 15:15

Apart from ones in 'The Staffroom' and (if it exists) the similar areas for NHS staff they should all be moved.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/03/2020 15:17

@NellyGrace - don’t you think that MNers are bright enough to find coronavirus threads if they are in the dedicated coronavirus topic?

If they had put them all into fishnet, The Royal Family or Culture vultures, you might have a point.

MinnieMountain · 22/03/2020 15:17

I've been trying to use MN for escapism. I get anxious, thought I'd got it under control with counselling, then this happened.

This is Mumsnet not Coronavirusnet. Maybe you'd like to set that up OP? Then you can spend all your time there.

TeenPlusTwenties · 22/03/2020 15:22

I think it's fine for topic specific if it is talking the impacts, e.g.

  • not seeing family - Relationships
  • schooling - various Education boards
  • kids driving you up the wall - Parenting boards
SoupDragon · 22/03/2020 15:30

Why is Mumsnet still moving Coronavirus threads to health?

They are moving them to the Coronavirus topic.

Otherwise 90% of them would be in AIBU. Do you think that is better?

SoupDragon · 22/03/2020 15:32

This thread is a prime example - why have you put it In AIBU rather than "site stuff"? You are not asking whether you are being unreasonable at all.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 22/03/2020 15:32

I think it's fine for topic specific if it is talking the impacts, e.g.

And the title reflects what it is about too.
A simple "(CV)" would help identity it from people with other issues on those boards.

TeenPlusTwenties · 22/03/2020 15:34

The threads on the education boards are all clear 'how impacted will y10s be' 'online resources' etc.

wanderings · 22/03/2020 15:34

As I have replied on other threads about this: no no no no no no no no. YABVVVVVVU.

Every single thread on “trending now” for the last day or two has been pure vitriol, from the titles alone. Some people want to read something else! The reality is bad enough.

MN has now turned into a hysterical hotbed of competitive scaremongering, moaning, hurling insults around, which the daily mail would be proud of. Keep the wretched CV threads to their own area. This attitude is more contagious than the virus itself.

And MN, please suspend the “trending now” box: it looks like a daily mail front page.

AlternativePerspective · 22/03/2020 15:37

Maybe they should rename AIBU to “coronavirus2, for those hoo missed the first one because they’re too thick to see it.”

All this talk of how it’s irresponsible for MN to hide the discussions, bollocks. Nobody needed to come to Mumsnet or to red your (not) groundbreaking insight to know that Coronavirus exists.

Newsflash, there is still a world out there. People are still having babies, planting flowers in their gardens now that it’s spring, planning other things in their lives and the more people do that the less anxiety that is going to cause.

PS: you posted this in the wrong section, it should be in site stuff. So I have reported it so MN can move it.

@ Samcro and others who are currently separated from loved ones, Flowers

DontCallMeShitley · 22/03/2020 16:01

All threads in Trending are about it. Can't miss it. Just clicking on one of them tends to direct you to the topic.

Hiding threads doesn't hide them in active so in my case impossible to avoid the subject. However I do know where to look if I want to find them, which most of the time I don't because every news page on the internet is covered with the subject.

I don't need to see it in every topic, I know it is out there and I know it is going to wreck a lot of lives, businesses, homes. It doesn't have to be on every single thread, or every single topic, people KNOW it is going on and not everyone wants to have to keep seeing it.

Whoareyoudududu · 22/03/2020 16:25

I guess because people use MN as a form of escapism so coming onto AIBU which is usually full of lighthearted relief such as ‘my colleague is being a CF’ or ‘my sister is being a bridezilla’. Now you’re also bombarded with CV threads even on AIBU so can’t escape it anywhere. Sucks to have anxiety right now.
