to ask you which is the most realistic vegan "cheese"

Posting for traffic - sorry - I tried the vegan page and only got one response.

My DS (4 months) has CMPA and I am now dairy free. He's much better, but I am miserable and missing cheese. I have some Violife "Mature cheddar" which is ok for cheese on toast. Which ones do you wise people like? Which is most cheese like?

I really like the range by Bute island foods, especially the cream "cheese". Their products I've seen are also palm oil free

Sheese, the caramelised onion one.

Annabk · 18/03/2020 19:16

Applewood vegan cheese is to die for!

PurpleDaisies · 18/03/2020 19:17

Applewood in sandwiches, Red Leicester sheese in sauces.

VeryQuaintIrene · 18/03/2020 19:17

We like the Tesco "free from" range and yes to Sheese.

daffodilrosedaisy · 18/03/2020 19:18

Apple wood

SwayingInTime · 18/03/2020 19:20

There’s one called the walnut gatherer, possibly only available in Manchester though? Might be online too though. It’s worth looking for!

QueSera · 18/03/2020 19:30

Tried them all, and our hands-down favourite is Cheezly by Vbites/Redwood. The cheddar is great in sandwiches and mac&cheese, and the mozzarella melts perfectly and tastes amazing on pizza, lasagne etc.
Second to that: Follow Your Heart. Great mozzarella and parmesan.
BUT it is a very personal thing, and you really just need to try different brands to find one(s) you like.

QueSera · 18/03/2020 19:31

Ohhh forgot to mention Mouse's Favourite - spectacular artisan cheeses, an unbelievable camembert. But pricey, sadly.

QueSera · 18/03/2020 19:33

And for cream cheese: Tofutti cream cheeses.

Thank you! Lots to try!

Sainsbury’s do a decent fake Boursin type cheese.

lastqueenofscotland · 18/03/2020 20:22

Violife is fucking rancid and evil

The applewood one is lovely
I like the asda pre grated stuff and it sort of melts but too much gives me an upset stomach

StepIntoMyParlour · 18/03/2020 21:21

Whatagreytdoggo · 18/03/2020 22:24

Another vote for applewood vegan cheese :)

Boshmama · 18/03/2020 23:19

Nush cream cheese!!

Bananacake20 · 19/03/2020 03:52

Applewood vegan cheese! It melts great, definitely my favourite. We like the Daiya cheeses in our house as well. I'm fond of the grated mozzarella style and my OH loves the cheddar style block. These are pricey at about £4.50 each from Sainsbury's but great as a treat. Sainsbury's own brand garlic free from cheese spread is good too especially on crackers.

MaggieAndHopey · 19/03/2020 05:55

All the supermarket vegan cheese analogues are awful and wrong, I wouldn't bother with any of them.

When I went vegan I didn't eat 'cheese' for several months because what's the point when it's nothing like the real thing - it just reminded me of what I was missing. Then I mostly forgot about cheese and that was fine. Then I started experimenting with cultured nut based cheeses and they are the nicest in my opinion, they have that cheesy tang, but still not an exact replica. So I have them every so often. And I make a cashew based 'mozzarella' for pizzas every Saturday, which I really like, it fulfills the melty-gooey function I want from pizza topping.

MaggieAndHopey · 19/03/2020 05:56

I can't believe people are suggesting Sheese! Sheese is the worst of them all. I had to throw away a pizza I made with mozzarella-style Sheese all over it. Tasted like foot-flavoured grout.

PurpleDaisies · 19/03/2020 07:21

It’s only the Red Leicester sheese and only in sauces/melted.
Vegan cheeses are quite personal taste so I think you have to be prepared to kiss a few frogs.

SouthWestmom · 19/03/2020 08:33

I'm alone in hating the applewood one, it stinks so bad. It's just about okay cooked into a baked potato

annabell22 · 19/03/2020 14:54

I buy the Waitrose vegan block, I've had it on toast and on a pizza and it worked well for both. Also use a little on a soya bolognaise sometimes. It grates and slices nicely and bizarrely only has about half the calories of cheese.

Fluffybutter · 19/03/2020 15:00

Where do you find vegan cheese ? Is it actually in the cheese aisle ? As I looked for ds a few weeks back and couldn’t find it with the cheese or in the small vegan section

PurpleDaisies · 19/03/2020 15:36

fluffy most supermarkets have it in the following places...
A vegan section in the chilled area
A free from section in the chilled area
A vegan/free from chilled cabinet near the fruit and veg (my local Morrison’s)

Where were you looking?

Fluffybutter · 19/03/2020 16:48

I looked in the chilled aisle where they had the vegan “meat” and the cheese aisle and then I just wandered about aimlessly as couldn’t find someone to ask . (This was before the apocalypse)
