Make your own Calpol?!?

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:01

I need calpol at the moment for my 14 month old baby.
He has a slight temperature and the shops are completely empty due to the coronavirus worry. I expressed my frustration that people had bulk bought for 'just in case' and I need some right now for my unwell baby.
Someone I know just had a go at me telling me to not be so stupid and to "make my own Calpol as it's only paracetamol."
That sounds like the most terrifying idea! How on earth would you know the exact amount to use etc and I understood that crunching up paracetamol tablets was dangerous as they are designed to release slowly.
I was under the impression that medicine manufacture was a scientific art! Maybe I'm wrong!!!

OMG please don't do this. Incredibly dangerous

ButterflyWitch · 16/03/2020 15:02

Just don't. NO!!!

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:03

@ButterflyWitch believe me I have absolutely NO intention of doing it!!!!

Yes, don’t make your own Calpol.

I take it you’ve tried local pharmacies for Calpol/paracetamol suspension? I picked up a prescription this morning and they had Calpol and own brand suspension on the shelves.

ElektraPlektra · 16/03/2020 15:03

Please don't, paracetamol can be fatal when given in excess.

Stickybeaksid · 16/03/2020 15:04

Has everyone in the U.K. just lost all their sense over night? Please don’t try this

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:04

Please don't panic anyone. I have NO intention of doing this!!!

Readyme · 16/03/2020 15:05

Wow however told you that is seriously irresponsible!
Have you tried calling local pharmacies? Or ringing local mums?

WrongKindOfFace · 16/03/2020 15:05

That’s insane.

If it helps you can do a search on the boots and Superdrug websites for shops with stock.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 16/03/2020 15:06

OP have you tried local small shops? Supermarkets here are half empty but my corner shop has pretty much everything still in

Readyme · 16/03/2020 15:06

whomever*

Selfsettling3 · 16/03/2020 15:06

Have you rang round local pharmacies to find out if they own brand children’s paracetamol or asked on local Facebook covid help groups?

Namechange4nowt45 · 16/03/2020 15:06

How stupid! I couldn't imagine anything more stupid or dangerous than making your own calpol, my dd has health issues that cause her a great deal of pain so I've had to order some on chemist 4u because our local town which is full of chemists etc didn't have 1 bottle. People have also been told that if they cant get there hands on paracetamol tablets to get liquid which annoys me because it's making a shortage for people that have swallowing difficulty and children, I've seen adults getting all the calpol off the shelves and dispensing it between each family member do they get through the checkout. Some actually said oh we havnt got kids it's for me just incase!

Nixen · 16/03/2020 15:08

Jesus Christ. I’ve heard some stupid shit in my time but that’s one of the worst!

AnotherMurkyDay · 16/03/2020 15:09

Don't make your own but you can use the wrong suspension so long as you work out how much of it to give (it won't be the same amount!)

notanotherjigsawpiece · 16/03/2020 15:09

But children’s paracetamol suppositories

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:09

My local one is out and I don't drive. It will have to be prescription I think.
I just couldn't believe someone would suggest making your own!!?

notanotherjigsawpiece · 16/03/2020 15:10

*buy

WineAndTiramisu · 16/03/2020 15:10

Try local pharmacies, ours had loads in on Saturday

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 16/03/2020 15:10

I got some by asking at the pharmacy counter in tesco that had its shelves decimated.

And fyi you absolutely can crush paracetamol tablets.. you wouldn't want to becasue its vile tasting but it's not a slow release.

Loughers · 16/03/2020 15:10

all aboard the faux indignation bus !!!!

Woeisme99 · 16/03/2020 15:12

Where are you? If you're in South Wales by any chance I have some I'll happily give you

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:13

Yep. Must admit I was dumbfounded.

sqirrelfriends · 16/03/2020 15:14

It might sound like a silly idea but have you tried your local Facebook group?

Our community page has been so good in this regard with people are volunteering to do food shops etc. and one lady popped some formula round for a mum who couldn't find any.

LoisLittsLover · 16/03/2020 15:15

@Liv83 I have a bottle I would happily pass on if you're local to me.
