Make your own Calpol?!?

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:01

I need calpol at the moment for my 14 month old baby.
He has a slight temperature and the shops are completely empty due to the coronavirus worry. I expressed my frustration that people had bulk bought for 'just in case' and I need some right now for my unwell baby.
Someone I know just had a go at me telling me to not be so stupid and to "make my own Calpol as it's only paracetamol."
That sounds like the most terrifying idea! How on earth would you know the exact amount to use etc and I understood that crunching up paracetamol tablets was dangerous as they are designed to release slowly.
I was under the impression that medicine manufacture was a scientific art! Maybe I'm wrong!!!

Normal paracetamol aren't enteric coated, so no, they aren't a slow release like some other medications! Why would getting it on a script be better?

As another person said, ring around friends/family/neighbours in the short term for a single dose. Then ring pharmacies to see who has the liquid paracetamol, or the suppositories in stock. Ask them to put a bottle aside and either collect yourself, or get someone else to.

My niece needs calpol as she has a cold. I got a bottle at my local pharmacy this morning no problem.

MinkowskisButterfly · 16/03/2020 15:17

This is the most ludicrious and dangerous idea. Please dont do it.

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:19

My mum has found half a bottle at her house and is bringing it over. It should hopefully get him better now.
I just couldn't believe someone would think it ok to make your own. He hasn't got children, but even so! Common sense hasn't prevailed obviously.

Apparently a pharmacist somewhere talked about mixing the powder contents of an adult capsule with jam. He was specific about the amounts for that person in that situation.

That seems to have grown into 'mixing your own calpol'.

PinkDaffodil2 · 16/03/2020 15:21

Glad you weren’t going to actually do it - but does your child actually need paracetamol if they’ve a mild temperature but otherwise well?

Atalune · 16/03/2020 15:23

Local Facebook page is made for this type of crisis.

Hope your baby feels better soon

m4rdybum · 16/03/2020 15:23

I'd be tempted to ask MNHQ to delete this, lest it give some idiotic people daft ideas Confused

We are concerned people may do this and get it wrong so we are taking it down. Thank you for your understanding.

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/03/2020 15:24

For a sore throat try mixing a half tsp of tumeric powder into a full cup of warm milk. You can add honey if he’s old enough. It tends to work better than calpol for sore throats / coughs

puds11 · 16/03/2020 15:26

Order it off amazon

Ohdeariedear · 16/03/2020 15:32

Try pharmacies. I’d been unable to get non-branded ibuprofen or piriton in any of the supermarkets - pharmacy had plenty.

OnePotato2Potato · 16/03/2020 15:33

Our tesco was all out but found plenty at a local pharmacy

reesewithoutaspoon · 16/03/2020 15:34

Waterbottle her baby is 14 months old. The soluble paracetamol never fully dissolves and you cant guarentee it will be an accurate solution. it needs to be calculated depending on the babies weight

TabbyMumz · 16/03/2020 15:36

It doesnt have to be calpol. Ask the pharmacist for childrens liquid paracetamol...they always have their own brand, and it's cheaper.

Zoecarter · 16/03/2020 15:38

Where are you ??? My local home and bargains and b and m seemed stocked up

FarTooSkinny · 16/03/2020 15:39

You can make homemade calpol by mixing super strength paracetamol with raspberry vodka. All perfectly safe.

GA2012 · 16/03/2020 15:39

Insanity. If it helps my local b&m had calpol yesterday. Maybe worth a look if you have one nearby.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 16/03/2020 15:43

You only need to give him calpol if he's distressed. A fever helps fight the infection.

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:44

@FarTooSkinny ah ha! Of course.
Right as rain in no time.
At least we can keep a sense of humour in these times.

My dil just called me to see if I can get some, so on my way to Boots, don't care if it's own brand, does the same job.
They also can't get size 5 nappies, and she works in a supermarket. She saw one woman loading formula milk into a trolley.
The world has gone mad.

StudentMummy20 · 16/03/2020 15:45

Oh no, please don't!

Olawisk · 16/03/2020 15:47

If cut a pill down if Iv ran out for my daughter.

Work out the dose I would of gave her which is now normally half a paracetamol pill, split the pill and give it to her

But she’s 9 so it’s a lot easier.

How do you even make your own calpol anyway Confused

Devlesko · 16/03/2020 15:47

Oh yes, ditto to removing the thread. Thanks

Liv83 · 16/03/2020 15:49

@Olawisk you don't!
