To not want to pay £88 a month to Sky!

Poppyanddaisy55 · 15/03/2020 08:22

They are putting up my subscription by £5 from next month. I'm sick of the extortionate cost but am not clued up on alternatives at all. We have fibre broadband (which is a necessity with 4 family members all using a lot of wifi) No movies or sport. And landline which is NEVER used. Dh watches all top Sky tv such as GofT etc. I cant even remember the channels they are all on (Atlantic maybe?) This is non negotiable too. Also have Sky plus again, defo want something similar. The catch up tv option has never worked despite several phone calls so we gave up. On top of this we also pay separately for Netflix and Spotify. Please mumsnetters is there an equal alternative? Can we get rid of a landline? I also have a Totum student card so not sure if this makes me eligible for any further discounts.

Phone up and cancel. Go to a broadband only deal which is £25/month. If you really want to keep your sky channels move to their streaming service called Now TV which is £120/year.

Cacaca · 15/03/2020 08:27

Threaten to cancel - your bill will likely miraculously shrink.

ChasingRainbows19 · 15/03/2020 08:29

Now tv do all the sky shows etc it's cheaper than sky. Usually deals when you first sign up or try to cancel too

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 15/03/2020 08:29

We had the same issue, I called them last week and said I couldn’t afford it any more, miraculously £10 cheaper a month! We also had HD which I removed - just phone and tell them exactly what you want. We have super fast unlimited broadband, kids, phone and sky Q and we pay less than you.

Abibranning · 15/03/2020 08:32

We only pay £58 and have movies on top of everything you have. Just tell them it’s too expensive and ask what they can do. You need the retentions department.

DrierThanANunsNasty · 15/03/2020 08:32

God, Sky is SO unbelievably expensive and they’re absolute CFers to boot. I had a bill come out for £83 when we moved house and apparently it’s because the cheaper deal we were on had run out because we’d moved... whaaat? Also, that’s JUST for TV as we have our broadband with Virgin. We don’t have all the channels, but were pushed into having a multi room we don’t use just so we could have HD? Was all very odd.

One quick call to cancel whatever BS they had signed us up with and we’re back down to £60 but still soooo expensive just for TV.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/03/2020 08:32

See what offers Virgin are doing for new customers and either switch to them, or phone Sky and tell them 'Virgin will charge me £x per month can you match it'.

Findawaytobehappy · 15/03/2020 08:33

Phone up, tell them you’ll cancel and watch your bill drop by 50%!

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 15/03/2020 08:33

A) do some in depth research using MSE which will give you the information you need on exactly what you could be paying if you switched (30 quid for broadband comfortably plus a maximum of 9 quid for Now TV)
B) phone sky and say you’re quitting
C) see whether the offer they make you is worth staying for
D) if not, switch (and get a good discounted entry deal for NOW TV)

Arrowfanatic · 15/03/2020 08:36

Nowtv is £8 a month & you get those sky channels. It's actually a sky tv product, and if you cancel your pass each month they do fab offers to make you keep it. At one stage I got it for less than £4 a month.

Itwasntme101 · 15/03/2020 08:38

Cancel the tv, we had all the channels plus the sport (no broadband) and were paying about £70-£80 a month.
We cancelled with the intention of getting the sports on now TV for £33 a month. After it had cut off we got an email with an offer and now have the channels plus the sport for £27.

skippy67 · 15/03/2020 08:39

Get Now TV. I have the entertainment package which includes sky Atlantic, sky one etc. Currently paying £5 a month. Can cancel at anytime.

Oblomov20 · 15/03/2020 08:40

Dh watches all football, which I don't mind at all. God I wish we could cancel sky. Currently paying £59

BarbaraofSeville · 15/03/2020 08:41

and get a good discounted entry deal for NOW TV

I've just signed up to 6 months of Now TV entertainment and Movies for £49.99 in total.

Irial · 15/03/2020 08:41

I cancelled our full price now TV (8.99) and got it for 3 months at 1.80

Strangerthingshere · 15/03/2020 08:41

Watching this OP as we are the exact same. If we switch to Now TV, will we still be able to use Sky HD box to record and live pause?

Medievalist · 15/03/2020 08:42

Agree with others - ring up to cancel and they will cut the cost.

PrayingandHoping · 15/03/2020 08:44

Every year you should always ring and say it's too
Much and without fail every year they will reduce it and usually give a freebie (like a movie) for free

00100001 · 15/03/2020 08:47

yep, cancel, don't take their first offer.

virgin tried to charge us £58pm after 18 months of £29. rang up to cancel, call centre man offered to knock £3 pm off ...i said no thanks, so got put through to a "specialist cancellation team"

magically, my bill is now £28pm.... 😁

PipsM · 15/03/2020 08:47

We were in the same boat and have switched to zen broadband and now tv which we watched through the Xbox and a now tv stick. We had all the streaming services easily accessible.
Then OH bought a smart tv and we tend to now just watch things on that on amazon prime and Netflix and very little on now tv. We got a deal on now tv on Black Friday for £100 for the year for sky tv and movies so worth a look. Don’t miss the sky box at all.
But if you don’t want to change I said I was leaving a year ago, it got to a few weeks before we left and they cut our deal in half. So hold your ground if you do call them! Loads of advice on money saving expert.
Good luck

ilovedjerrymore · 15/03/2020 08:48

Always ring and tell them you are thinking of leaving when your contract is up for renewal.
My broadband has just been renewed i was paying £26 a month it was about to go up to £44 a month. I phoned up and have renewed for £23 a month! Grin It’s honestly worth calling them.

lachy · 15/03/2020 08:51

My virgin bill was £66. I called and said I was moving to sky as they were giving me a better deal, and replacing all of the equipment.

(I had no intention of moving to sky btw)

My bill is now under £40.

Middleagedmidwife · 15/03/2020 08:51

I phoned sky to complain it was poor value. I pay £80 a month but now have fibre, movies, sports plus formula one for my son.
My daughter phones every 6 months or so to complain and always gets it cheaper!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/03/2020 08:53

We have Amazon Prime and Netflix and honestly have more TV than we know what to do with.

Toomboom · 15/03/2020 08:54

I cancelled my Sky last year to their costs. I now have a BT freeview box, cost about £100, but no more subscription or contract. I can record, pause, rewind and catch up. You can pay for prime or netflix as well if you want it, they are still much cheaper than Sky.
