To not want to pay £88 a month to Sky!

They are putting up my subscription by £5 from next month. I'm sick of the extortionate cost but am not clued up on alternatives at all. We have fibre broadband (which is a necessity with 4 family members all using a lot of wifi) No movies or sport. And landline which is NEVER used. Dh watches all top Sky tv such as GofT etc. I cant even remember the channels they are all on (Atlantic maybe?) This is non negotiable too. Also have Sky plus again, defo want something similar. The catch up tv option has never worked despite several phone calls so we gave up. On top of this we also pay separately for Netflix and Spotify. Please mumsnetters is there an equal alternative? Can we get rid of a landline? I also have a Totum student card so not sure if this makes me eligible for any further discounts.

We have plusnet fibre internet at £23 per month, Netflix for £6 per month and amazon prime. Our tv is a smart tv downstairs although upstairs we've a Kodi stick to make it smart so can catch up on all shows we want plus things like GoT is on there. I WFH so internet is a must but no way would I be paying £80+ with sky when we get everything we use for much less.

Isthistrueor · 15/03/2020 08:56

Sky and Virgin have always been expensive. We don’t pay for a TV subscription, haven’t for years because we just don’t need it. I used to pay something crazy like £60 a month to Sky and the only extra package I had was kids. It was naff so I got rid, I spend my money on national trust and English heritage memberships now instead.

Astillbe · 15/03/2020 08:59

Sky increased ours to nearly £130 from £80ish, my husband rang to cancel, they rang back within 2 weeks and it's now down to about £75. I still think it's a lot by dh refuses to take the sport, HD etc off. We've had Sky for 20 years and the increases are ridiculous, we have to do this every year to keep the cost down.

kevintheorangecarrot · 15/03/2020 09:02

I'm surprised anyone would pay that amount every month. I just watch FreeView on my TV, and pay Amazon Prime/Video subscription each month to watch movies/series etc. I don't have a landline either, just broadband.

Thefaceofboe · 15/03/2020 09:04

Ours went up to £140 for the whole package, including WiFi because our discount ran out after 18 month. We rang up to cancel as we were going to swap to virgin and they offered us it was £90 but we still said no we want to cancel. Got through to the cancellation team and we got offered it for 60. Wasn’t our intention but we are laughing nowGrin

Simba999 · 15/03/2020 09:05

You can't get rid of landline unfortunately. We have the standard internet from sky, have been told for £5 extra a month I can get fibre. We pay £33 a month, and that with some sort of tv package not sure which one, we have channels such as sky Atlantic. We also have the sky box set(there was an offer during Xmas £2.50). We got upgraded to the sky Q box for free when the HD box wasn't fully functioning as it should, for example wouldn't download from catch up tv

hoochymamgu · 15/03/2020 09:07

I was about to say Money saving expert, this is my go to guide to all things broadband. I have now changed internet providers, it's not hard (if I can do it anyone can Grin)

Dogman2020 · 15/03/2020 09:08

Cancel sky - we did 2 months ago and got our broadband & phone line through ee for £27 a month.

For tv in one rom we have now tv. like others have said go to your account say you need to cancel and a new cheaper deal shows up - currently paying £12 a month for entertainment, films and kids channels until august.

for the front room which mostly dp sits in I got him an android box off amazon for £40 he can stream sports/films/anything he likes from worldwide. its not like the old days of chipped boxes these are legal boxes that can be bought.

theres really no need to be paying sky in this day and age, everything on it is available elsewhere much much cheaper.

NekoShiro · 15/03/2020 09:10

Virgin fibre doesn't require you to have a phone line, so you can cut you landline bill by switching to virgin, and if its just certain shows you need maybe think about cutting your tv licence out as well and switching to internet streaming, netflix, nowtv and amazon prime are the main ones, do not stream through a smart tv app though as the video quality varies wildly, and companies pay less attention to updating the tv apps vs phone and internet versions, a gaming console like a ps4 (basically a mini computer) connected to my tv in the living room is what i personally find best.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/03/2020 09:12

Why paying so much.
I have sky fibre £25
Don’t need a landline
Don’t have the tv packages anymore
Don’t need to record anything as most channels have catch up apps- but the record etc function is £10 a month.

MrsPnut · 15/03/2020 09:13

We moved from virgin to BT, and we have TV broadband and phone for £30 a month including line rental. We get BT sport in that and we use Now TV for sky channels. We can record shows and we pay for sports on an ad hoc basis through Now if we want it.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 15/03/2020 09:15

Get rid of sky.
Get now tv, you will get an introductory deal, when that is up, go to cancel say it is too expensive and you will get a new deal for a few months.
Netflix and Prime can also come in handy and you will still pay a fraction of what you are now.

Teabag37 · 15/03/2020 10:13

Cancel ! We went from 45€ to 14€ (with some quibbling)....

Ruby1991 · 15/03/2020 12:33

Wow id complain

I have sky tv (with kids channels added), broadband and phone. I pay £47 per month. Without kids channels it would be £42. No idea if this is a good deal. I used to pay £47 for everything inc movies but when my contract ended i told them to remove movies and they said new contract would still be £47 as i had some new customer offer before which bought the price down.

Ginfilledcats · 15/03/2020 12:43

Phone up to cancel, we halved our bill every year by doing so. Just stay strong. When they put you through to the Glasgow team that's the final straw and will do you the best deal.

We have internet, phone, movies and usual sky channels on sky q. For £23 a month.

Abelino · 15/03/2020 12:48

I had the same increase, I've got a few months left before I can cancel. I complained about the price increase and they gave me a £10pm discount for the rest of my contract, so I'm £5 better off until then.

Goatymcgoaty · 15/03/2020 13:09

We pay £105 a month for tv and broadband. Did the “threaten to cancel” thing and it didn’t work for some reason. Gave 30 days notice and got to within 5 days of cut off, they sent to box to return all the equipment. Had to call them and compromise and pay the same as last year. Any tips?

hokolo · 15/03/2020 13:27

I just use Netflix.

£88!

If you paid £88 a month into a pension starting now, if you are, say, 35, you'd have £58,900 extra at retirement. Just saying.

Kaykay066 · 15/03/2020 14:46

Think the price sky charge is outrageous for tv and there is never anything on, £88 is my food/fuel for the week so absolutely can’t afford it. I pay £5.99 for Netflix and I get now tv entertainment package free via my phone although I don’t think it’s all that great either...Cancel see what they say or go elsewhere must be cheaper options

oohnicevase · 15/03/2020 14:53

Don't then , we have smart TVs and everything is on demand . We have Netflix , now ( sky) and all the free ones so no need for sky . Everything is available on demand now so sky is jsit not necc .. their prices are crazy!!

EnglishRain · 15/03/2020 14:56

Sky just reduced my bill to £44 after I threatened to leave. That's the new broadband they do, basic TV package so has Atlantic etc. Never use the landline so got the most basic line rental and nothing else. We don't have multi room or anything though.

EnglishRain · 15/03/2020 14:57

Also, I did all mine via webchat. Didn't have to ring anyone.

PinkiOcelot · 15/03/2020 15:34

@hokolo God that’s mad isn’t it?!

We cancelled Sky over a year ago. Just have terrestrial TV now with Netflix and Amazon (though don’t watch this much).

I did miss being able to record at first but now don’t even think about it. It’s definitely an unnecessary expense.

RandomLondoner · 15/03/2020 16:23

I'm paying £87 for Sky, with Netflix included, after the price increase, and that;s only for TV, my broadband is from elsewhere. Oh, and that's discounted from £111 standard price. Despite that, when it comes to drama, I've watched far more on Netflix and Amazon Prime in the last three months than I've watched on Sky. I have Sky movies, but doubt I see one really worthwhile movie a year. It's all rubbish.

The bit obstacle to moving away is sport. I saw recently that it's possible to get Now TV in full HD since very recently, which overcame my original objection to it. But when I look at using Nowtv for sport, you can only watch live. You cannot record, you cannot watch on catch-up, you cannot pause live TV, you cannot rewind live TV to see what just happened. All those make it hugely worse than a Sky Sport subscription, which is actually a lot cheaper as I can get a quite a big discount on it.
