Tena lady 'trickle of joy'

Ummm, just seen the new Tena lady advert - 'I call it my trickle of joy' 😳.... Do you?! Personally I'd call it 'pissing myself' but hey ho!... Far, far worse than the annoying oral B woman IMHO!... Yes, let's all 'embrace' women being chuffed to bits with being incontinent to sell more tena lady. I fully appreciate that incontinence wear is a need for some, and it's brilliant the stigma is being diminished. But somehow it just doesn't seem right to advertise this is the 'norm' so just pop a pack in with your normal shop and crack on?

How old are you OP? For a lot of women, especially those who have had more than one vaginal birth, it actually is the norm.

Jaguarana · 13/03/2020 01:59

Incontinence does affect lots of women, but it absolutely shouldn't be seen as the norm. It is fixable, there are various options available to treat this condition and women shouldn't have to suffer in silence. I don't like the tone of the ad, normalising a condition that can be treated effectively with physiotherapy or surgery. I had this after the birth of my third child and my GP referred me to a physio who did a muscle-tightening therapy on me that fixed the problem. Pads might be useful in the short term, but women really don't have to put up with this and I wish there was more awareness about this condition.

EBearhug · 13/03/2020 02:06

It might be the norm that many women suffer a level of incontinence at some point, but the few women I have talked about it with - not one of them referred to it as a trickle of joy. Nothing positive like joy. I don't think the Tena ad will change that, but it might break some of the taboo and make it easier for some women to talk about it or approach their GP.

Runkle · 13/03/2020 02:06

I agree OP. The answer is not to simply put a pad on and resign to the normalisation of 'oops moments' but to get it properly medically investigated and treated.

Lalala205 · 13/03/2020 02:09

@SpokeTooSoon I'm 43, I had some post vaginal birth loss of bladder trigger cues some 20+yrs ago. I had to argue with my GP for further treatment as I stated it wasn't 'just one of those things', and I didn't feel it was okay to minimise it and fob me off towards accepting incontinence for the next 50-60yrs. I just feel the advert is looking to say 'you're a woman and this is fine!'. My worry is it'll just contribute to mainstreaming the issue vs people feeling they can actually say no I'm wanting to treatment for it instead.

Women's health can quite easily be seen as secondary, we are expected to have period pain, childbirth pain and then to suffer the consequences. When they were testing Viagra they found it really helped with period pain, but they didn't bother to continue that line of research.

Lilymossflower · 13/03/2020 02:22

Wait it's not normal?

I'm a young woman and trickling is 'normal' for me if I laugh or cough. Thought it's just one of those things cause I've given birth.

We actually can get treated and not have to live with it ?

IanHislopForPm · 13/03/2020 02:49

@Lilymossflower no it absolutely isn't normal. Go to your gp and ask for help. There's an nhs app called 'Squeezy' that's amazing it gives you little exercises to do 3 times a day and it really improves pelvic floor tone. But there are lots of non surgical options for incontinence before you get to surgery

Lynda07 · 13/03/2020 03:04

Lily, why do you think it's 'normal' after childbirth? If it was normal, everyone would have it. I never have.

It can be treated successfully. There used to be a woman at Kings College Hospital, London who was an expert on 'wet women'. Her name is Linda Cardozo, I don't know if she has retired now but someone else will have taken over her department . She was a gynaecologist and urologist. I'm sure there are similar departments in other parts of the country.

I dislike that advert very much, it is so unrealistic.

Vedaisawesome · 13/03/2020 03:12

I cringed at " trickle of joy". Even DH who normally never reacts to adverts went "WTF?" It's most certainly not a joy to many women!!!!

Tbf it also makes you ask whose on the creative panels to develop these ads?... I'm 100% sure no woman on any advertising format board ever stated, 'when I involuntary pee myself, it's like a trickle of joy!' 🙄

Bezalelle · 13/03/2020 05:54

"Wet women" is just as bad!

RhymingRabbit3 · 13/03/2020 05:55

What a horrendous advert. And how upsetting that so many young women accept this is "normal" after having a baby - it absolutely is not! And you absolutely should push for treatment.

feelinguseless101 · 13/03/2020 06:01

It's not always treatable though. Sometimes it's permanent. I don't think saying you you don't have to live with it and can be treated is helpful either. There needs to be a balance.

This is the advert about incontinence during sex? Just do what other women do and rebrand it as squirting. Men love women who squirt apparently. Lots of demand for it online.
Those pelvic floor exercisers are really good.

Bluebobolink · 13/03/2020 06:33

Um, but squirting during sex isn't peeing.. its a known phenomenon and produces a different liquid that smells different and has a different texture/taste..

Lalala205 · 13/03/2020 06:34

@feelingiseless100 I completely agree! There should just be as many products/ads for the normality of men with incontinence as women! They should also demonstrate them 'still maintaing being sexy', and jumping up and down on trampolines whilst pissing themselves, and still being 'the main bread winner' in the household whilst living their best life! 🙄... Unfortunately I don't think there's a masssive market for that?

OP posts:
TheWordmeister · 13/03/2020 06:38

Trickle of joy, my arse.

It might well be the norm for some women but I resent these ads. They should at least say ‘always seek medical advice if you suffer from incontinence’, rather than implying it’s a woman’s lot in life.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 13/03/2020 06:39

"trickle of joy"?

Somewhere there is a PR agency who managed to convince someone to pay them for that.

Remarkable.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 13/03/2020 06:42

Whats joyful about pissing yoursyourself ?

Thereshegoesagain · 13/03/2020 06:44

I detest the normalisation of female incontinence. We currently 2 options, pelvic floor exercises for life, or fucking tena ladies. This is rubbish, it has been, until recently another thing that is not spoken about and us women just put up with. There has to be more options than this, this cannot just be a human design flaw, that post baby, we just piss ourselves. I do hope someone somewhere is doing some real research to find out why and to find a solution to this burden so many of us have to endure.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2020 06:45

Trickle of joy

Wtf! Did a MAN come up with this perchance?

Seventyone72seventy3 · 13/03/2020 06:48

Awful message. Yanbu.
