Tena lady 'trickle of joy'

Ummm, just seen the new Tena lady advert - 'I call it my trickle of joy' 😳.... Do you?! Personally I'd call it 'pissing myself' but hey ho!... Far, far worse than the annoying oral B woman IMHO!... Yes, let's all 'embrace' women being chuffed to bits with being incontinent to sell more tena lady. I fully appreciate that incontinence wear is a need for some, and it's brilliant the stigma is being diminished. But somehow it just doesn't seem right to advertise this is the 'norm' so just pop a pack in with your normal shop and crack on?

OP posts:
FlappingTurtle · 13/03/2020 09:10

These adverts give me the absolute rage.

It's one thing to remove a stigma, but it's another thing to imply that it happens to everyone (or rather every female) and just has to be accepted without seeking medical help (because you're female, innit. Female issues don't deserve medical help. You just have to put up with things).

Can't help seeing that message as cynically profit-driven. "Don't try to seek treatment. Just buy a packet of Tena every week for evermore!"

AudacityOfHope · 13/03/2020 09:10

Trickle of joy?? Angry

If men were routinely shitting themselves pants wouldn't be marketed to them with talk of 'nuggets of joy'

Just women being patronised as usual.

Moonmelodies · 13/03/2020 09:14

I'd never heard of this brand. Thanks for the heads-up!

UserV · 13/03/2020 09:17

@Lalala205 YANBU. Stupid advert.

I have had 2 kids and NEVER piss myself (or fucking TRICKLE) when I am laughing.

SO insulting to assume all women do! Hmm

Ektorpia · 13/03/2020 09:19

nuggets of joy GrinGrinGrin

LakieLady · 13/03/2020 09:24

"Trickle of joy"? Really?

I nearly pissed myself laughing.

Great way to sell something though. 50-odd years worth of Tena pads must add up to quite a bit of revenue.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/03/2020 09:25

I've had four kids, always done my pelvic floor exercises and was fine until I hit the perimenopause when I found myself having to rush to the loo with very little warning, and experiencing the odd tiny leak if I dilly dallied.

At menopause I started experiencing vaginal dryness (yes another joy in store for you ladies) and was prescribed HRT vaginal pessaries.

Not only have they worked a treat with the dryness but they've also solved the incontinence. When I mentioned it to the doctor at my check up, she said that was quite usual and they worked to rejeuvenate the whole area.

So exercises and operations aren't the only options.

MaomiMak · 13/03/2020 09:28

Yes it is treatable...look at the vaginal mesh and the joy it brought women to have it fixed.

Now suspended due to the catastrophic complications it caused.

I'd rather wee myself.

SpokeTooSoon · 13/03/2020 09:31

I’m loving all these posters claiming this never happens to them (preening) and that “there are lots of options”. How would you know?

THERE ARE NOT LOTS OF OPTIONS.

SpokeTooSoon · 13/03/2020 09:34

I have had 2 kids and NEVER piss myself (or fucking TRICKLE) when I am laughing. SO insulting to assume all women do

Why are you insulted? Because you think bladder weakness is shameful and disgusting?

SpokeTooSoon · 13/03/2020 09:36

It should be treated and access to treatment should be given readily

Love to hear your treatment solutions. What are they please?

Latenightreader · 13/03/2020 09:37

The first time I saw an advert with a woman my age and a small baby I was so relieved I had tears in my eyes (stupid, I know). I've been struggling with this since my daughter was born and it was such a relief to see it acknowledged and have people talk about it. I've been seeing a physio for almost a year and things are just starting to improve, but it is very depressing. Seeing a person like me using them made me feel less disgusting.

Lidl pads are great though, and a fraction of the price of tena!

@SpokeTooSoon absolutely

What options?

Physio doesn't always work.

Bulking injections are not effective

Mesh has been suspended as it was a disaster

Colposuspension is major surgery

What options?

SpokeTooSoon · 13/03/2020 09:48

People say it so glibly. See your GP! Get it sorted!

I think a lot of you would be horrified to know there really is no good treatment for this beyond pelvic floor exercises.

puds11 · 13/03/2020 09:49

I was told be a health care professional that ALL women should start doing pelvic floor exercises in their teens and continue daily irrespective of having children Shock I’ve just done some now, but will probably forget tomorrow!

AlexaAmbidextra · 13/03/2020 10:01

I saw this for the first time last night. I didn’t think Tena ads could get any worse but they just proved me wrong. I actually shouted at the telly. Fucking idiots. 🤬

IkeaSlave · 13/03/2020 10:03

I know because I have had my kids abroad. Every single woman is offered intensive physiotherapy regardless of birth (c section or vaginal) to properly address pelvic floor issues. The UK is shit but people know no better.

I get what you are saying, sometimes there aren't options that will solve the issues for individual women, but I can tell you that not all women in all western countries have an 'oh well, I'll just buy tena' attitude to their pelvic floor and neither do their healthcare providers.
We have a culture in the uk of just putting up with things and not wanting to bother people or seek help

Yerroblemom1923 · 13/03/2020 10:06

I had surgery to fix my bladder prolapse and leakage issue. I hate the way they try to normalize it to sell their product!

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2020 10:11

Just looked it up as I hadn’t seen the ad. Directed by, yes, a man. I agree with some of the posters when they say it felt like something you shouldn’t be watching. It made me feel comfortable. A type of erotica maybe, idk. www.hitc.com/en-gb/2020/03/10/tena-lady-advert-viewers-divided-over-2020-ageless-campaign/

SinkGirl · 13/03/2020 10:19

Christ. Doesn’t Lanthimos have anything better to do?

On the one hand I like the concept of normalising older bodies, but the incontience part being tacked on as it is (“I also have incontince but I don’t mind, i call it my trickle of joy”).... FFS.

Mmsnet101 · 13/03/2020 10:27

I've reported quite a few of these ads, and I'm not normally someone who gets THAT annoyed about these things. Lots of mums in my groups think it's an essential consequence of giving birth and haven't questioned it or went to seek help. I received really good physio after care on the NHS without having to go via my GP or fight for help. No issues now 6months post forceps delivery. Its common, there isn't a quick fix, but it is more often than not treatable.

If the ad were to say its not something to be embarrassed about and seek medical assistance /advertise themselves as something short term or to help along the way then it would be great as it's raising awareness. As it is, it's just belittling a genuine medical condition and promoting women to put up with it and pay for expensive workarounds for the rest of their lives.

Mmsnet101 · 13/03/2020 10:28

Also everyone should check out Elaine Miller /Gussie Grips, a physio who's doing comedy to promote and help women with incontinence issues.

TheYellowOfTheEgg · 13/03/2020 10:32

I had stress incontinence after 3 vaginal births. I'd leak when laughing, coughing, sneezing or running.

The Tens Care pelvic floor exerciser fixed it completely for me.

Other products are available...

Alsohuman · 13/03/2020 10:34

The answer is not to simply put a pad on and resign to the normalisation of 'oops moments' but to get it properly medically investigated and treated

Good luck with that. When people whose hip and knee conditions are limiting their mobility are having to wait literally years for surgery, what chance do women with a condition that amounts to inconvenience stand? About 40% of us have this, that’s a lot of treatment.
