Tena lady 'trickle of joy'

Lalala205 · 13/03/2020 01:36

Ummm, just seen the new Tena lady advert - 'I call it my trickle of joy' 😳.... Do you?! Personally I'd call it 'pissing myself' but hey ho!... Far, far worse than the annoying oral B woman IMHO!... Yes, let's all 'embrace' women being chuffed to bits with being incontinent to sell more tena lady. I fully appreciate that incontinence wear is a need for some, and it's brilliant the stigma is being diminished. But somehow it just doesn't seem right to advertise this is the 'norm' so just pop a pack in with your normal shop and crack on?

OP posts:
Vulpine · 13/03/2020 06:48

When men start pissing themselves as indeed many do and will, I wonder what they call it. Feckin trickle of joy my arse

okiedokieme · 13/03/2020 06:49

Unfortunately it is normal and the only "treatment " I could get was exercises and a consultation with a specialist nurse who suggested modibodi period pants (they work well). The operation they used to offer is now restricted because it turned out to have side effect problems

EmrysAtticus · 13/03/2020 06:49

It is common but it isn't normal. If you are suffering from incontinence see a pelvic floor physio asap.

GameChange123 · 13/03/2020 07:08

Complain to the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) and tweet the company?

Cheerbear23 · 13/03/2020 07:19

Yes that phrase is offensive bullshit, no doubt thought up by a man in marketing department. I doubt anyone feels any joy on pissing themselves.

Comtesse · 13/03/2020 07:32

I have had a lot of physio for stress/ urge incontinence. This should not be normalised. Don’t just accept it and buy tena lady - have some proper physio and see if that helps. Yes I know it doesn’t solve every problem but I wish a lot more women got to try to resolve issues with physio. AWFUL.

IkeaSlave · 13/03/2020 07:35

I haven't seen the ad but I heard it discussed on the radio. Context = incontinence on orgasm/during sex. Otherwise 'trickle of joy' is even more weird as an expression

Wrt squirting. The number of middle aged women I know who suddenly found they can squirt, in my personal opinion correlates pretty well with the rise in incontinence in that age group. It's kind of nice that they are not body shamed by it. Their men appear to love it. It's a big thing in porn. Yeah, maybe some squirting is different, but all those middle aged women ... really it's all not urine?

Again, those pelvic floor stimulators are really good. You can buy them online. It was part of my post natal physio in France. They take women's sex lives more seriously.

MarthasGinYard · 13/03/2020 07:37

'For a lot of women, especially those who have had more than one vaginal birth, it actually is the norm.'

Bloody hell is it?

I'm late 40's and find that shocking.

As for the advert it sounds pretty horrific but not seen it.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 13/03/2020 07:38

Well I'm 53 and if I ever do piss myself, I absolutely will not see it as a 'trickle of fucking joy' Angry

TheMemoryLingers · 13/03/2020 07:41

There's a fine line between normalising something so people needn't feel embarrassed or alone; and normalising something so people don't see the need to seek treatment - I'd say the advert had crossed that line.

If1knewiwouldnotbehere · 13/03/2020 07:43

@feelinguseless101 A friend of mine works in this area. Anyone who uses her services she helps. She's written a book on the subject and has a radio show/podcast concerning this issue. I don't think until you have tried everything and everyone that you can say there are cases where nothing can be done. She doesnt like the surgery option either.

Strugglingtodomybest · 13/03/2020 07:49

I hate this advert, every time it comes on I end up shouting, Go to the doctors! at the TV.

longwayoff · 13/03/2020 07:51

YANBU. I had no idea this was so common. Don't accept this. The advert is dreadful and makes me want to boot the tv out but I'll hold on to it until I see an ad with a young man smiling happily about involuntarily peeing down his leg. Ffs.Angry

Useryokyesno · 13/03/2020 07:56

I saw this and had questions too. I don't have children but I understand it can lead to some incontinence especially with vaginal births. So I don't think we should be shaming women for something 'natural'.

On the other hand should we be accepting this is normal? Is it yet another example of women's health problems being erased as normal?

lowlandLucky · 13/03/2020 08:05

I have yet to see any T.V advertising for Tena men pants they sell, why do they only try to embarrass women ?

SpokeTooSoon · 13/03/2020 08:09

People are naive to think this problem can be easily solved.

Sure, for women in the early stages of bladder weakness, pelvic floor exercises can really help. But for women whose stress incontinence (leaking small amounts when coughing or sneezing or during exercise) is more advanced (often due to prolapse) surgical options are really limited and not always successful. Women are usually advised to delay surgery for as long as possible. It can create more problems than it solves. It’s not a quick fix.

Post menopause, leaking is likely whether you’ve given birth vaginally or not as the muscles of the pelvic floor lose strength. Before menopause, pregnancy and the type of birth you’ve had are the causes.

Saying “well, it’s never happened to me” doesn’t mean it’s not a very, very common problem for women.

SpokeTooSoon · 13/03/2020 08:10

Tena adverts are very cringe though, I’ll give you that.

Purplelion · 13/03/2020 08:21

It’s such an awful message. It 100% shouldn’t be seen as normal for women who have given birth. I’ve had 3 babies vaginally, the youngest being 6 month old and I do high impact exercise regularly and have never leaked. My hospital gives you a little talk on pelvic floor exercises before you leave after giving birth. If you do leak you should see your GP as there is lots that can be done!

Largeyellowdaffodil · 13/03/2020 08:25

There is a lot of naivety on this thread that treatment is effective. Even hysterectomy, rectocele and cystocele treatment don't work for everyone.

The advert is crap but the answer isnt see a doctor, lots of people have seen many doctors over many years and had multiple surgeries but still have mild incontinence.

SinkGirl · 13/03/2020 08:29

I can’t understand why so many people don’t get the difference between common and normal.

Stress incontinence is common, but it’s not normal. We shouldn’t be expected to just live with pissing ourselves, nor should we be normalising it with twee phrases like this

Would men ever be told that pissing themselves is joyful? Of course they wouldn’t.

SinkGirl · 13/03/2020 08:30

I’m not saying it can always easily be solved - but that doesn’t mean no attempts should be made to solve or improve it.

borntobequiet · 13/03/2020 08:37

That is so fucking awful. Idiots.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 13/03/2020 08:59

I have an overactive bladder - no joy associated with my 'trickles' or worse! In a way it's good to raise awareness though but yes it would be good to have a line about seeing your GP on there somewhere, there is often help available.

StillCounting123 · 13/03/2020 09:02

I found the ad very uncomfortable, almost like I was watching something I shouldn't. Confused

The long lingering strokes of her own shoulder, the lady lying down admiring her cellulite thighs. The TRICKLE OF JOY?!?!?!?

It seemed like the line between embrace your body/almost a sexual tone was crossed. The whole thing was cringe in the extreme.

FWIW, I have 5 DC and have been known to wet myself if I run, vomit or sneeze. Never once have I found any joy in it. Lying fuckers.

CherryPavlova · 13/03/2020 09:09

Urinary incontinence is a known complication of vaginal birth.
That doesn’t mean it should be normalised or accepted.
It should be treated and access to treatment should be given readily.
It should follow on from discussions at post natal examination.

Appalling advertising.
