To get gp to prescribe calpol

Ds due 8 week imms Monday. I'm nearly out of the 2m plus calpol prob have enough for 2 doses.. Since Friday I have gone everyday to tesco, sains, super drug, wilko, boots, savers etc ( luckily apart from tesco all the others are in the same street very local ) and tesco in opposite direction but not far as on way to eldest dc sch
Even tried the 2 local independent chemist's. They've both said get gp.m to prescribe as they have some in stock for prescriptions.
Obviously I will try again each day between now and then

Im worried as when dc 2 had the imms she was really poorly with high temp and nearly ended up hospitalised.

I would even be happy to pay for it at prescription adult price or whatever..
I feel Awful and kicking myself as I never let things run that low.

I do have half a bottle of 3m liquid paracetamol but he'd only be 8 weeks.

Isn’t the dosage for 2 months and 3 months the same? You can get it prescribed on the minor ailments scheme?

SockQueen · 12/03/2020 00:13

It's the exact same stuff, just only branded Calpol has the license from 8 weeks. The own brand ones are labelled 3m despite the dose being exactly the same, no idea why.

JustBecauseItWorkedForYou · 12/03/2020 00:22

Ah that's ok then I didn't realise that. Neither are branded so that confused me. The teeny 2m bit I have is from a local Chemist.the 3m one is tescos

I just call it all calpol no idea why.
Altho I worry the half bottle I have won't last going by dd experience but will keep trying the shops etc anyway.
Obviously I hope hell be OK with the imms.

Never heard of that scheme either.

We got ours prescribed directly from the chemist at minor ailments. I'd probably ask the pharmacist if the other bottle you have would be ok. It probably would.

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 00:34

I'm not sure if the minor ailments scheme is just in Scotland and northern Ireland. I think some English pharmacies offer it but not all. It'd be worthwhile looking it up. It could be why the pharmacy asked that the GP prescribe it.

JustBecauseItWorkedForYou · 12/03/2020 00:41

I'm in England but will pop round the chemist tomorrow and ask about it. Dh has gp Friday anyway so may get him to mention when there. She's norm pretty good if within the 10nmin slot to ask more than one thing.

What area are you roughly? Just wondered if anyone knew where it might be in stock for you. I can name a few places round me (Derbyshire) where it is definitely still available.

Greydove28 · 12/03/2020 00:57

Ebay have it

WhatTiggersDoBest · 12/03/2020 01:16

Have you checked Home Bargains on the offchance they might have some? My local one had it (Belfast area) today although I didn't get any.

ThatDreamSheep · 12/03/2020 01:48

I managed to pick some up from Lidl.

Zoecarter · 12/03/2020 06:00

I got some from Aldi on Saturday

insancerre · 12/03/2020 06:13

Aldi had some in yesterday

ExclamationPerfume · 12/03/2020 07:52

Our health authority no longer allow prescriptions for Paracetamol/Calpol for anyone.

BiscuitTin3 · 12/03/2020 07:52

What about garages?

Summersunandoranges · 12/03/2020 07:55

Don’t buy medicine off eBay ffs!

AuntieMaggie · 12/03/2020 08:02

Or just ask the nurse who does the vaccines if they can prescribe when you go in?

AddUpToNothing · 12/03/2020 08:02

You could do an order and collect to Superdrug or Boots and pay for next day delivery?

Also agree with garages and corner shops.

IkeaSlave · 12/03/2020 08:04

God is that minor ailments scheme still running? What a rip off of taxpayers, subsidising lazy arse parents.

Op, it's a while off yet. Stocks will be replenished daily. You could ask for a phone appointment on the day if you still don't have any.

FAQs · 12/03/2020 08:06

Boots have it can you do click and collect or delivery?

DivGirl · 12/03/2020 08:26

Just use whatever infant own brand you can get. It says 3 months but the dosage is exactly the same and the NHS website acknowledges that you can give any infant paracetamol syrup.

Mumtoaperfectbabyboy · 12/03/2020 08:33

Poundland also do the unbranded one.

Define lazy arse parents who use this scheme.

Emmacb82 · 12/03/2020 08:44

There are only 2 strengths of liquid paracetamol for children, 120mg/5ml which is 3m+ and 250mg/5ml which is 6yr+. So use the 3m one you have got, that will be fine x

fishandsnails · 12/03/2020 08:59

Lloyd's online pharmacy have it in stock. I had a similar problem and ordered some from there.

annie9876 · 12/03/2020 09:06

My best friend had her DDs 8 week jabs on Tuesday just gone and like you was struggling to get hold of calpol.

On the off chance we popped to see the pharmacist at our local boots when we were in town on Monday and he happily put one aside from their daily delivery for her to collect Tuesday morning when she showed them the jabs appointment letter.

They did also advise the 3m plus stuff would be fine as long as DD was generally fit and healthy.

They were really nice about it and said they were struggling to keep up with demand because some parents appeared to be panic buying (even though it was restricted to two bottles some people were going in multiple times to stockpile more of it!). Absolute madness and just making a situation worse than it needs to be but there's "nowt as queer as folk" as my old gran would say!
