To get gp to prescribe calpol

JustBecauseItWorkedForYou · 12/03/2020 00:09

Ds due 8 week imms Monday. I'm nearly out of the 2m plus calpol prob have enough for 2 doses.. Since Friday I have gone everyday to tesco, sains, super drug, wilko, boots, savers etc ( luckily apart from tesco all the others are in the same street very local ) and tesco in opposite direction but not far as on way to eldest dc sch
Even tried the 2 local independent chemist's. They've both said get gp.m to prescribe as they have some in stock for prescriptions.
Obviously I will try again each day between now and then

Im worried as when dc 2 had the imms she was really poorly with high temp and nearly ended up hospitalised.

I would even be happy to pay for it at prescription adult price or whatever..
I feel Awful and kicking myself as I never let things run that low.

I do have half a bottle of 3m liquid paracetamol but he'd only be 8 weeks.

Lazy arse parents = anyone who isn't totally unable to pay out of their own pocket for things like paracetamol for their kids. It was all over my facebook a few years ago .. all the middle class mummies who would never be arsed getting a gp appt for calpol as even they have a modicum of bloody shame. Instead happy to cost the taxpayer a bloody fortune in dispensing fees to the private company Boots who chatgrge the nhs through the nose instead of paying a couple of quid out of their own pocket.

Is my definition of lazy arse parents.
I thought this scheme had died a death

TwinkleLightsRubberDucks · 12/03/2020 09:53

I've seen a fair amount of generic paracetamol suspension for children in the pound shop/pound land. I've seen it so far in 3 different ones, maybe you could try there if you have one near you.

I hope you manage to get hold of some.

GinNotGym19 · 12/03/2020 09:55

If you’re in the doctors Monday getting the vaccines done I’d get a prescription at the appointment, if you can’t find any calpol by then. There’s nothing wrong with this if you literally cannot get calpol!

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 12/03/2020 10:02

What about garages?

Yep, or small corner shops - most will have it, sometimes behind the counter.

Grumpos · 12/03/2020 10:20

The 3 mth stuff is ok for them as long as you check with nurse / doctor on the dose.
My LO was in hospital before 3 mths and when discharged was told just the regular 120 calpol / paracetamol and they gave me the dosage and times allowed etc.

sheisabelter · 12/03/2020 10:37

exclamation what if you’re taking it daily? GP prescribed me paracetomal in boxes of 100 as I take it on a daily basis, it would be ludicrous to be buying another box of 16 every second or third day so I’m given a box each month on prescription . I’ve got a chronic pain issue but don’t want to take opiates (having had addiction issues with codeine) and can’t take NSAIDS very often .

I’m aware that’s totally different to needing calpol as a one off but a bit baffled that you can’t get it at all !

ExclamationPerfume · 12/03/2020 11:30

@sheisabelter I don't know to be honest. I remember them announcing it a few years ago. It was costing thousands with people going to the GP every time they needed Calpol.

EmeraldShamrock · 12/03/2020 11:31

Why not if you are already at the doctor's.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 12/03/2020 11:35

Please do not assume your child will need paracetamol, and only give it if needed, not just in case

DottyandOtty · 12/03/2020 11:41

Shocked at people saying this is ok. The NHS pay over the odds for these things compared to what you can pay in the shop. I’d also be deeply embarrassed to sit there and ask for a prescription for calpol, unless I was living in actual poverty. Buy unbranded and don’t contribute to this mentality of getting everything and anything on the NHS. You or family/friend will be able to find some somewhere. It’s not like it’s hand sanitiser Hmm

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 11:53

Lazy arse parents ? Mmmm saved me from taking up doc apps . I freely admit to just buying the meds after the consultation with the pharmacy. Tesco is 5mins away, docs 15 mins by taxi (don't drive for public safety). So I paid for Tesco para, burns dressings and went home instead of £20 on taxis. Changes to my long term meds via pharmacist instead of doc was a lot quicker and I get to speak to the same pharmacist more easily than GP. It's not just "lazy arse parents"

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 11:55

I should add my kids prefer Tesco as we have to go past the book and got aisles to get there.

JustBecauseItWorkedForYou · 12/03/2020 11:55

OK when I said just in case. I meant in case it's needed not to pump into baby anyway

I just tried wilko savers sains and super drug and pound land. . All out of stock.

I'm going to aldi in a different town later and I know there's a little chemist nr there so will try there and there's also a super drug and boots there.

It's not as easy trying loads of corner shops with a toddler and baby in and out the car on the off chance so trying the main streets first then the corner shops as a last resort

And I was happy to pay for a prescription if needed I'm not trying to get it free or whatever.

Grrr auto correct. Book and toy aisle.

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 11:57

Phone up first to save driving, plus if They have they might keep it to one side for you.

JustBecauseItWorkedForYou · 12/03/2020 11:58

And I've already said I have unbranded I just call it all calpol it's easier it's not about wanting actual calpol.. Or getting it free or being lazy.

JustBecauseItWorkedForYou · 12/03/2020 12:01

Good. Idea @Zombiemum1946 will give them a call.

Its crazy out there if people didn't but for sake of it it would be OK.
In savers today there was 2 adults with 2 older teens. All getting 2 boxes each of paracetamol.. Then saying they're going to re que and buy another 2 each. So they have it before the shops all Completely run out.. I heard the dad say it'll prob go out of date like the last lot before we use it..
Thats nuts, 16 boxes in total they got.. Madness.

Try petrol stations, they often have calpol etc behind the tills

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 12:12

That's just crazy. My husband went into Tesco for my sanitary towels and said the para shelves were empty.

ExclamationPerfume · 12/03/2020 12:56

You can order it in to Boots or Superdrug usually.

dementedpixie · 12/03/2020 13:02

Please do not assume your child will need paracetamol, and only give it if needed, not just in case

You are told to give 3 doses of paracetamol after the 8 and 16 week injections due to fever risk after the MenB jab. You give it as standard, not just if required

Camomila · 12/03/2020 13:23

Sometimes you need prescriptions for minor things though - eg, to give a 10m old piriton or some over the counter stuff if breastfeeding.

Butterwhy · 12/03/2020 13:29

As you need it for after the jabs because of MenB, I would phone the surgery. You've looked around and can't find any, the pharmacy has advised doing this, and the doctor can most likely do it over the phone. Usually I am not one for getting OTC meds on prescription due to the cost of processing, but you've done what you can and you will need it, I would phone them.

Smithtylater · 12/03/2020 13:56

I got a bottles this morning from a petrol station. Thank god as i was also struggling to find it and both my babies are teething and little one is also having his 16 week vaccines next week.

Mia1415 · 12/03/2020 14:11

Try local corner shops or garages. Both had some in my town, despite the supermarkets being out of stock.
