Was I wrong?

At the checkout queue earlier, I asked the man behind me if he’d like to go in front of me - he had about 4 items, I had a trolley full. He gratefully accepted.

But the woman behind him said “you may have time to spare, not all of us do”.

I just said I was sorry and turned away. I’ve never thought of it from her point of view before, I’ve always thought I was doing a helpful thing.

Don’t do it in future or carry on as usual?

She had 2 people in front of her regardless of the order they were served.

Wonkydonkey44 · 11/03/2020 13:43

She would still have been queuing for the same time though wouldn’t she and I would have done the same .

arethereanyleftatall · 11/03/2020 13:43

If she was behind him, what difference did it make to her what order those in front of her went?

bravotango · 11/03/2020 13:43

How strange - surely you and the man behind you are still in front of her (just swapped round) so the time she had to wait hadn't changed?

Surely the wait for her would have been the same either way! Maddness!

She is rude, ignore her!

Carry on being nice!

RainbowDash101 · 11/03/2020 13:43

What was it to do with her ? She had to wait behind both of you anyway? How bizarre.

Nicknacky · 11/03/2020 13:44

She still has to wait the same amount of time, no matter what order the two of you went in.

And yes I would do this and I frequently get offered to go first by the person in front when I’m buying a couple of things for my lunch.

HollowTalk · 11/03/2020 13:44

It doesn't make any difference to her waiting time!

MouthBreathingRage · 11/03/2020 13:44

What did it matter to her? Either way there were two people in front of her, the wait time didnt change so I'm not sure what the problem is?

OchonAgusOchonO · 11/03/2020 13:44

So long as he was in front of her, it made no difference and she was unreasonable. If he was behind her, you were vvv unreasonable as you let him jump in front of her.

arethereanyleftatall · 11/03/2020 13:44

If you'd called him forward from behind her, then yes, that would have been rude of you. But you didn't, so it makes zero sense.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/03/2020 13:45

Why would you think you were in the wrong?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 11/03/2020 13:45

She wbu, you just swapped places, you didnt invite him to queue jump in front of her.

DontBuyLangClegCashmere · 11/03/2020 13:45

Didn't affect her at all. Stupid person!

Keep on doing it, I try to as well, and I've had it offered to me too. Well done OP

MouthBreathingRage · 11/03/2020 13:45

I think this thread may just be 200 replies of the same answer....

GA2012 · 11/03/2020 13:45

If she was behind him she would have still had to wait behind 2 people regardless so she’s just rude and stupid.

Purplelion · 11/03/2020 13:45

What a weird thing to say! It made no difference to her wait time. As I usually go shopping with 2 young children I often let someone with a few items go in front of me so they aren’t waiting for me!

onlyk · 11/03/2020 13:45

Assuming the women was behind you and the man then you allowing him to go ahead of you has no impact on her ( ie she’s no worse off) so she was just being a grump for no reason

OchonAgusOchonO · 11/03/2020 13:45

Should read you would have been very reasonable if he was behind her, not you were.

Lobelia123 · 11/03/2020 13:46

i think you paid someone a small kindness - that means a lot in this grabby selfish world. Good for you and shame on the misery guts who complained....whatever order you were served in makes no difference to how long it would have taken to get to her.....unless she had her nose put out of joint because she felt more entitled to be offered to skip the queue!

DowntownAbby · 11/03/2020 13:47

Sounds like she was just TAF and couldn't work out that it made no difference to her queuing time.

You did nothing wrong, in fact you were being considerate. With hindsight you wouldn't have apologised, I'm sure.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 11/03/2020 13:48

She was going to wait the same amount of time, regardless of who was served first you or him.

Winterwoollies · 11/03/2020 13:48

The two people in front of her swapping order makes no difference to her WHATSOEVER. 🙄

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 11/03/2020 13:48

If he was directly behind you and she had two people in front of her either way? YANBU.
If he was further back and she now has extra people in front of her? YABabitU, but I still wouldn’t have said anything in her shoes.
