AIBU to put my DC in matching clothes?

Just out of curiosity really. I put my pair in matching clothes the majority of the time. 19 months between them. Mainly because it’s just easier when buying clothes to buy two of each. Just wondered how many people think it looks a bit naff and how many people do/would do the same as me?

YABU. They are individuals and should be treated as such.

underneaththeash · 10/03/2020 20:28

Yes, really naff.

LettertoHermoine · 10/03/2020 20:29

No, I hate it.

CuppaZa · 10/03/2020 20:29

Fuck me, so naff. Got a few friends that do this.

livingthegoodlife · 10/03/2020 20:30

Love a matching pair, my girls pretend they're twins. Same height & same weight. They obviously have separate outfits too but occasionally they like to match.

MysteryFrog · 10/03/2020 20:31

There’s 5 1/2 years between my two boys and they love wearing matching clothes!

Bettyknocker · 10/03/2020 20:31

This is one of my pet hates that I keep to myself. I think because my own mum dressed me and my sister in the same clothes until we were old enough to protest, there’s 11 months between us. But then my mum was a teenager so she’s forgiven.
One of my sisters friend does it with three girls, same socks, shoes, bows everything! If you want to get two of everything then do it, but you could dress them in different clothes day to day?

I think I hate it so much because it’s like the kids are an accessory, at least that’s how I felt when my mum did it to us.

mauvaisereputation · 10/03/2020 20:31

Depends on the ages but if they’re little I think it’s ok. Me and my sister (3 years younger) had lots of matching outfits and I don’t remember having a problem with it. It was only special/party outfits, not everyday ones though.

Reginabambina · 10/03/2020 20:32

My kids often wear ‘matching’ outfits accidentally. Not exactly the same but a lot of their clothes are similar/they have some identical items (sometimes I’ve found something that I liked so much that I got it in several sizes for example). I’m not sure naff is a word people use to describe us. To be fair they (and I) usually look so scruffy that it’s probably pretty obvious that it’s not intentional. Obviously once the youngest starts school they’ll be wearing identical clothing five days a week, six once they’re a bit older.

theclockticksslowly · 10/03/2020 20:32

Don’t do it! They’re individuals, treat them as such. Got a couple of friends who do this.

PennyGold · 10/03/2020 20:32

I'm not a fan I'm afraid.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 10/03/2020 20:33

Naff, but not unreasonable.

SilverySurfer · 10/03/2020 20:33

It's horrible, please don't. My DM did it to my sister and I and we both hated it, going to great lengths to destroy the outfits in as subtle a way as possible.

Chinks123 · 10/03/2020 20:33

Mine are girl/boy with a big age gap so I can’t really match them, but I do try and match them colour scheme wise if we’re going somewhere nice.

We’re going on holiday soon and I’ve just bought some bits that they can actually match in. A hat and shorts for baby ds, and I got dd a dress and headband in the same fabric. I think they’ll look really cute but maybe it does look naff..
I do know someone who matches her dds every single day even down to hairstyle and I think that’s a bit much.

Walnutwhipster · 10/03/2020 20:34

More than a bit naff.

MamaGee09 · 10/03/2020 20:36

APart from baby twins , which I find cute dressed the same/similar. I hate seeing siblings dressed the same. I knew one girl who dressed her girls the same and there is 5 years of a difference. A neighbour used to dress her girls the same until they were 11 and 12. It gave us a giggle sometimes as the girls hated it but mum insisted!

Clymene · 10/03/2020 20:37

No! My mum did it and I hated it. It's not easier either and your youngest is going to be wearing the same outfit in different sizes for the next 2 years if you're not careful

CherryPavlova · 10/03/2020 20:37

Oh dear.

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 10/03/2020 20:37

YANBU My girls loved matching when they were little although they didn't have very many matching outfits because most of DD2's clothes came from DD1. 18 month age gap. They're 9 and 10 now and still sometimes dress similarly (e.g. jeans and a stripey top)

Chocoholic26 · 10/03/2020 20:39

Haha, oh shit! Hadn’t realised it offended people so much Grin If I’d asked myself this before I had kids I’d probably say the same but for some reason I bloody love it!

Chocoholic26 · 10/03/2020 20:41

PS of course I’ll stop once they get a bit older...probably Grin

Doggybiccys · 10/03/2020 20:41

Not for me. I cringe even more at Xmas when whole families are wearing matching outfits.

Vieve1325 · 10/03/2020 20:45

Personally, my mum did this with me and my sister when we were young. 20 months between us.

It started a pattern of ya being treated as a pair that kept going well into my mid teens. Clothes, parties, friendship groups, part time jobs, presents, hobbies... if I did it she had to do it too. And I’d be expected to watch over her and I had no room for individuality.

Didn’t stop for us until I physically moved away at 16.

Loppy10 · 10/03/2020 20:47

My siblings do this with their kids. I think it is cute tbh! But only for toddlers, I think once they get past 4 or 5 it starts to look a bit creepy.

DailyKegelReminder · 10/03/2020 20:50

It wouldnt bother me seeing 2 children dressed the same. Cant say I understand why people do it though, seems more effort to me digging through outfits for the same ones. Unless you hang/fold both outfits together? Which I'm far too lazy for.
