so, ds has been off school for 2 weeks tomorrow. I've taken him to the doc twice, last time was Friday, and they said he has a cough, but don't think he needs antibiotics. He's been basically in bed for 2 weeks, he cant move, he is so tired all the time. I dragged him out for a walk the last 3 days but he can only walk a few hundred yards and then we have to go back, and he goes straight to bed. I don't think it's psychological. He cant play his playstation cos it hurts his eyes. He just lays in bed. I'm worried, but also worried about the head of year coming to the house tomorrow. I'm thinking should I try and get him into school tomorrow. They want to set him up in 'student support' where he has a room to 'study'. I don't think he would be able for it though. Well I'll see what he's like tonight. Anyone else any experience of this kind of illness. He doesn't have temp so doc ruled out glandular fever.

PS he's 11 in Y7

Your dr has done bloods then?
Because that's the only way to rule out GF

yoikes · 09/03/2020 16:56

I would be pushing for further tests.
Tell the school that.

Sarah510 · 09/03/2020 16:57

no the 2 different docs just listened to his chest, throat, ears etc. They are stumped cos there is no temperature so both said there was no need for further tests. I have to wait 2 more weeks and then 'see'.

How old is he? I was exactly like that off and on for about 18 months at 15-17. Horribly tired all the time, didn’t go to school and spent most of the time in bed. A couple of other girls in my year had it too. The doctors said it was post-glandular fever/ME. Has he been ill with possible glandular fever, maybe even last year?

Sarah510 · 09/03/2020 16:58

apparently anything that needs tests should have a fever....? I thought of a chest infection (which makes you very tired?) or glandular fever? both docs said it's "viral"

I would insist on bloods to check for glandular fever.

Let the teacher come, it won’t do any harm for them to see he is ill and they may be able to help ensure he is supported when he is well enough to return

Sarah510 · 09/03/2020 16:59

he's 11

If your ds is really that unwell YANBU to keep him off school, but that is a long time to be so ill. I would go back to the docs.

formerbabe · 09/03/2020 17:01

Two weeks is a long time to be ill especially as it seems he hasn't been diagnosed with anything other than a cough or prescribed medication...I'm assuming that from your post. I think most schools would be concerned in these circumstances.

To be honest, I'd let the teacher come over and see him and see for themselves that he is not well.

I'd also be back at the doctor's asap.

yoikes · 09/03/2020 17:01

I had GF at 18
I didn't have a fever but I could barely walk downstairs

Sarah510 · 09/03/2020 17:05

Yeah on Friday doc said to come back in 2 more weeks.... seems very long though. I mean a cold is usually 2-3 days off school, if that. I've gotten him up and dressed and ready for school a few times, but he just collapses onto the sofa, he's not able to go. He's very pale. Think I will phone for an appointment in a day or so - I dont think I should wait another 2 more weeks even though that's what the doc said

Have you posted this before ? If not someone else did last week or so and it was almost identical

Troels · 09/03/2020 17:10

My Ds was off sick for nearly 2 months when he was 12 nealy 13 weird symptoms and trips to a specialist involved. He's fine now.
On week two his was assigned a teacher who came out to him twice a week, collected work, sat with him at the dining table and went over lessons and left work for him.
It was the best thing ever for him. Really nice teacher who was newly retired and bored. He caught up in no time with this teacher and actually started to excell at maths with him.
Dh would go dizzy when walking and also lay down a lot and couldn't play his game system as it made him sick. So it took him ages to get though the work, but kept him busy.
I'm glad his school had this option for him. They called it being in home hospital.

Troels · 09/03/2020 17:11

Ds, not Dh.

greyspottedgoose · 09/03/2020 17:15

Is he anaemic?

greyspottedgoose · 09/03/2020 17:16

Doesn't explain the cough mind....

Finallyatooth · 09/03/2020 17:22

I really think you need to go back to the doctors urgently and insist that he gets further tests. I don't think it's normal for an 11 year old boy to lie in bed like that. Not for two weeks. On the basis of what you've written I don't find your GPs response acceptable.

Beebeeboo2 · 09/03/2020 17:23

He needs blood tests asap

Beebeeboo2 · 09/03/2020 17:24

Agree with *Finallyatooth”. The tests should have been done at second visit.

CottonSock · 09/03/2020 17:25

I think it's right the school should show an interest, and agree, keeping pushing at gp. I hope he gets better soon

zafferana · 09/03/2020 17:27

Cough is a symptom on glandular fever. He should be tested, as it could be that - the listlessness definitely fits. Could also be ME/post-viral syndrome (not sure if that can best tested for?). But GF they can test and they should IMO.

VenusTiger · 09/03/2020 17:29

Sounds like glandular fever to me OP

BikeRunSki · 09/03/2020 17:30

GF doesn’t always have a fever. Your dS’s symptoms sound exactly like GF when I had it.

Dacaday · 09/03/2020 17:31

I would not be waiting 2 more weeks, I'd have him back at the doctor's tomorrow. They just say it's viral when they don't know what's wrong. Am assuming they haven't taken swabs? In which case they can't possibly know for sure. Plus I'd want to know which virus. I think that's really not on with such a poorly child. Go back tomorrow and ask for a second opinion/tests.
