so, ds has been off school for 2 weeks tomorrow. I've taken him to the doc twice, last time was Friday, and they said he has a cough, but don't think he needs antibiotics. He's been basically in bed for 2 weeks, he cant move, he is so tired all the time. I dragged him out for a walk the last 3 days but he can only walk a few hundred yards and then we have to go back, and he goes straight to bed. I don't think it's psychological. He cant play his playstation cos it hurts his eyes. He just lays in bed. I'm worried, but also worried about the head of year coming to the house tomorrow. I'm thinking should I try and get him into school tomorrow. They want to set him up in 'student support' where he has a room to 'study'. I don't think he would be able for it though. Well I'll see what he's like tonight. Anyone else any experience of this kind of illness. He doesn't have temp so doc ruled out glandular fever.

A colleague's dd had something similar which turned out to be chronic fatigue. It started when she was in her teens. My mum has a similar thing which developed as an adult. For her, it's post viral fatigue which flares up whenever she's been unwell.

Don't worry about the school visit. Once they've seen your ds, they'll have more idea about how to support him.

As others have said, keep pushing the dr for more tests until you get a diagnosis.

MrsWednesdayteatime · 09/03/2020 18:50

My son had very similar in year 7, off and on, and up and down for around 6 months.

Saw the pediatrician, had blood tests, nothing ever diagnosed (thankfully). I put it down to puberty, testosterone spikes and growth spurts.

Figgygal · 09/03/2020 18:54

I don’t blame them that is a long time for him to be off without any diagnosis
Again I would be pushing for more tests urgently

TW2013 · 09/03/2020 18:55

Have they checked his sugar levels? If he is tired all the time. I would be asking for more tests. I would welcome the HoY and hope that they get on board with pushing for investigations.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/03/2020 18:57

When I had GF, I didnt have a fever but my throat was swollen, I felt so worn and out and I would sweat buckets. No fever at all.

HollowTalk · 09/03/2020 18:59

I'd see it as a sign of a good school, that they are sending someone out.

Go back to your doctor's and insist on more tests. It's really not normal for a boy that age to be like that.

mathanxiety · 09/03/2020 19:01

My mum had something like this at boarding school aged about 12-13. It was pernicious anemia.

Push until they agree to do blood tests. They should do a wide array of tests.

If the GP won't, then do whatever it takes to get it done privately.

JuniperSnowberry · 09/03/2020 19:01

Don't worry about the school wanting to visit, it is a good thing and they can line stuff up for when your son may be well enough to do some work but not well enough to attend school. Tell them how much he is sleeping and that he isn't even able to go on his games console.

But I would be booking him back into the doctors.

Friendsofmine · 09/03/2020 19:02

I had GF as an adult off work with symptoms you describe and more for 5 months.

You need bloods.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 09/03/2020 19:04

Erm I wouldn’t be worrying about HoY; I’d be worrying about your son.

Get back to the GP tomorrow, explain all that you have put here and ask for bloods as what you describe sounds more than a cold.

KarmaStar · 09/03/2020 19:07

DEMAND a blood test op.
Do whatever it takes to get your boy seen and you listened to.do not take no for an answer.
Mum knows when their child is ill.

foxychox · 09/03/2020 19:08

Another one here to say it sounds remarkably like when I had glandular fever, hope it gets sorted soon...

ilovesooty · 09/03/2020 19:10

I just want to say that this must be so worrying for you . I hope you can get to the bottom of it and I hope your son feels better soon.

Reginabambina · 09/03/2020 19:16

I had a really bad flu a bit older than that (a lot of kids did in my class), most of us were wiped out for two weeks and then had ear infections and coughs for a month following ‘recovery’. I don’t recall having a fever (or even a raised temperature).

Tolleshunt · 09/03/2020 19:16

He definitely needs proper tests. Sounds like it could be GF, but also could be several other things. The GP just taking a guess when he has been this ill for that long really isn’t good enough.

Do NOT rush him back to school until he is properly recovered and has gradually built up his activity levels first. You risk him getting ME/CFS that way and potentially being very ill for years. As others have said, he is ill, and therefore his missing school becomes a problem for the school to make sure he is adequately catered for at home, not a problem for you to solve by sending him in whilst ill.

Feathered · 09/03/2020 19:29

If he's tired, thirsty and going to the toilet a lot it could be diabetes. Always worth watching out for that. If he is then go to a and e.

Wallywobbles · 09/03/2020 19:37

I'm afraid you really need to push this. Insist that he has tests. Say how wrong this for him. Make a bit of a fuss.

Good luck.

Getoutofbed25 · 09/03/2020 19:37

Bloods need done and I say urgently. Don’t want to ska you but my son age 8/9 was like this but not do sever, GO did a referral immediately for bloods yo he be done at hospital and queried Leukemia, turned out to be anaemic with a strep infection. Have you considered going to A&E at children’s hospital to get tests done?

justasking111 · 09/03/2020 19:38

The school are being supportive. You need blood tests, swabs, whatever, not normal in an 11 year old.

Getoutofbed25 · 09/03/2020 19:38

Sorry for typos, I mean I do t want to scare you.
GP did the referral

Canadianpancake · 09/03/2020 19:43

I had a blood test for glandular fever today, amongst other things including underactive thyroid and some more sinister things. The doc seems to think it's glandular fever even though I've not presented with a temperature when I've been to see him. I have had an intermittent temperature though. Are his glands swollen or tender at all?

Janice88 · 09/03/2020 19:47

Blood tests ASAP!! My cousin had exactly the same symptoms last year. He was vitamin D deficient and the flu made it all worse

eMmAsuper8 · 09/03/2020 19:49

I had illnesses like this in primary school and secondary school. Was taken to hospital many a time but as far as I remember nothing was really done. It was something my body took ages to get over.
I'd get ill like this at least yearly until I was 19! I rarely get ill now.

I hope your son gets better soon!

Graphista · 09/03/2020 19:55

“They are stumped cos there is no temperature so both said there was no need for further tests” utter bollocks! You need better drs.

Gf classic at this age and with these symptoms but as pp said a blood test is necessary to confirm

I’ve had GF had no fever but was completely debilitated by it for about a year

Totally unacceptable to fob you off this way.

Oblomov20 · 09/03/2020 19:57

Get back to the GP ASAP. This is disgraceful the way you've been fobbed off. Be stronger. Insist.
