Something strange happening with banking

belay · 09/03/2020 16:30

My banking app shows cleared and pending transactions. There have been items in pending all day today. That never happens. AIBU to think this could be because of the instability of the stock market ?

This is just how banking works.
Previously you could not see the particular pending transactions, however your available balance would take these transactions in to account.
All that’s happened is that you can now view the particulars of the pending transactions.
The transactions will remain pending for different periods of time, dependant on the merchant.

cakegoblin · 10/03/2020 18:44

Wow there are some absolute bitches on here today.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 10/03/2020 18:48

Same for barclaycard. Had yesterday's transactions showing pending all.day.

midnightstar66 · 10/03/2020 18:48

Depends on how quickly the merchant takes it... I can have things in pending for days. Never had anything cleared in a matter of hours if not a direct payment. Weird!

dimdarkashian · 10/03/2020 19:01

Why do people have to be so rude when someone asks a question? It certainly doesn’t make you sound intelligent when you try to make a fool of someone else.

TrixieMixie · 10/03/2020 19:12

This is bollocks. Nothing to do with the stock markets!!!! Do you really think your bank would interfere with your day to day transactions because of what is happening in the City and Wall Street? I advise you to panic buy some bog roll and rub a wart with a toad immediately.

There’s no link whatsoever. This is the best question I’ve seen on here for a while. Love it, I think I want to be your friend!

glennamy · 10/03/2020 19:45

Hahaha - Oh my God!

You need to put the bloody phone down and live your life!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 10/03/2020 21:21

Obvs not many on here got the memo about #bekind!! Perfectly valid question hope OP has got her question answered

VK456 · 10/03/2020 22:26

I bank with 2 banks. One app has always shown pending transactions, but the other has only recently started showing them. I seem to recall that there may have been a change in legislation and that banks have to be more transparent, so that customers can more easily keep track of their transactions.

Lilyamna · 10/03/2020 22:43

To all the snidey posters laughing at this question, anyone care to give a basic explanation of how the system works to the OP? (And me?)
At the risk of being labelled a food (as OP has been) I can sort of see the thinking... to simpletons like us it goes something like:
Stock market affects economy ... which means something about how rich or poor a country is ... if the stock market drops and the economy suffers we have less money (extreme example- what happened to Greece ... banks can fail (like RBS or wall street crash) ... so maybe that might affect the time at which money moves through the banking system, including our accounts?

Obviously this isn’t the way it works, but anyone care to explain?

ToftyAC · 11/03/2020 02:38

Your bank will always hold pending transactions. Totally norm. They drive me mad on the business account as then I need to find out who has spent what where

MrMeSeeks · 11/03/2020 02:45

What?
You’ve Honestly never noticed any of your items in pending before? Do you not know how it works? If not then no, it’s not to do with the market crash.
Have you really never heard ‘ it may take 2-3 working days to clear with your bank’?

rosesandcashmere · 11/03/2020 03:36

The stock market gives zero shits about your bank account. HTH

Happygirl79 · 11/03/2020 12:27

There was a new requirement for banks to do this recently for transparency

bemusedmoose · 11/03/2020 14:45

my bank cant even run an automatic online monthly payment if the date falls on a weekend let alone process pending the same day!

pelirocco123 · 11/03/2020 14:57

My company takes card payments, we have t do an end of day banking transaction to get these payments released into our account , sometimes we may not do it until the next day ( or so ) . if its a large amount we will normally do end of day straight away as depending on the time of day it can be shown as cleared funds into our account the same day
I assume it shows as pending on your account due to how quickly the two banks do clearing
The pending page is a fairly new addition to some banks
