Priti Patel Cartoon

Whatever you think of her politics, AIBU to feel that the Guardian, and left wing commentators display disgusting hypocracy in their treatment of politicians in the centre-right, especially when female or of colour, in thius case Home Secretary Priti Patel?

Diane Abbott has been targetted by the most foul abuse, which is rightly highlighted and condemned, however claims of abuse are fired back when her views, consistency, politics and competance are questioned. But if the person in question is more of a centre-right pursuasion, they seem to be fair game.

What's the cartoon about?

Priti Patel spouts some vile stuff. It's nothing to do with her being the ethnicity that she is.

Ponoka7 · 09/03/2020 09:49

Just to add, she isn't center right, she's right of the right.

YeahWhatevver · 09/03/2020 09:50

Link?

Ponoka7 · 09/03/2020 09:50

I've just seen it. No that was out of order.

Coldilox · 09/03/2020 09:51

Priti Patel centre right?????

CustardySergeant · 09/03/2020 09:55

You've given no information about the cartoon so how can we vote? Not everyone takes The Guardian. I've looked on the website but not found the cartoon.

Everanewbie · 09/03/2020 09:59

The precise location that Priti Patel sits on the political horseshoe isn't the point. Maybe the mainstream right would have been more appropriate for some of you. The point stands.

The Guardian seem to have removed it.

Here it is. I’m not convinced. I don’t find it anti-semitic in the tropes it uses given that she’s clearly depicted as a bull (rather than the horns being devils’ horns).

Whydoesit · 09/03/2020 10:03

@EssentialHummus that’s why it’s offensive - she’s from a Hindu background so it’s the fact they’ve made her into a bull.
No accusation that it’s anti Semitic.

EssentialHummus · 09/03/2020 10:05

No accusation that it’s anti Semitic.

Clearly, but some of the commentary, including in the screenshot I posted, do suggest this.

It may reflect my lack of understanding about Hinduism, and I don’t find it very effective as a cartoon, but I don’t understand the uproar.

EssentialHummus · 09/03/2020 10:05

... or rather suggest that these are the tropes being used in the cartoon.

Devlesko · 09/03/2020 10:10

Is this her spitting image cartoon? I can't wait for it to come back, it's been too long.
How is it racist?
I can't stand her and her plans for social cleansing, and overt racism.
Has nothing to do with her colour or gender, she's just vile.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/03/2020 10:10

That's a cropped version Hummus

The Boris next to her is an arse shaped bull... which makes more sense of the Sacred Cow and Bulls Arse image, I think it was supposed to convey.

She has been shown as Boris's Sacred Cow... he has long been an arse!

Whydoesit · 09/03/2020 10:10

@EssentialHummus no, Sajid Javid said it was reminiscent of anti Semitic cartoons drawn by the same cartoonist. He’s not saying this cartoon is anti Semitic. No one is saying that. Patel is not Jewish and this cartoon is nothing to do with Judaism or Israel.
It’s racist (or not) because of the Hindu / bull thing.

Chocolatedaim · 09/03/2020 10:11

It’s offensive, but then again, so is she.

I don’t find it racist, but as a white person, that’s not for me to say.

I feel like I have to be very careful with my judgements here, because she is a god awful woman and I despise the tories, but I don’t want that to affect my opinion on this.

Like you say OP, Diane Abbot, who is my local MP, has been subject to horrendous abuse over the years, and she isn’t a heartless monster like PP is.

Personal attacks and abuse is wrong, criticism of her politics isn’t. I think this perhaps crosses the line.

mammmamia · 09/03/2020 10:11

It’s offensive to depict a woman from a Hindu background as a cow. It really really is.

JasonBrun · 09/03/2020 10:11

Definitely racist. How could they allow this to be printed?!

Everanewbie · 09/03/2020 10:13

I'm interested to hear views on whether or not the depiction is racist, but my question is more about the tribalism of left wing commentators and journalists and the hypocrisy that results.

The left to create merry hell, sometimes justifiably, when there is a perceived 'ism. But when its a figure the disagree with, they have 'disgusting views' or are 'dispicable' so clearly deserve it, or there at least exists some mitigation.

Ughhhh it’s not racist! It’s nothing to do with race! Cows are worshipped in Hinduism, not bulls, which is how the southern state of Kerala has justified continuing to eat beef in light of the nationwide ban (as they eat bulls, apparently). So actually some of you are being ignorant in thinking this is racist? This reply comes from my Indian Hindu husband

SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 10:16

I must confess I don't understand why depicting BoJo and PP as bulls is racist.

I understand about Hindus having a sacred cow but I'm not sure that means this cartoon is racist. It's not for me to decide though given I'm white.

Poorolddaddypig · 09/03/2020 10:17

She’s a vile woman and I think people should be allowed to comment on her blatant vileness without being accused of racism. This is getting out of control! In a way I think it’s MORE racist to behave like this - because you’re singling people out based on their race for different treatment to everyone else. It really sickens me and I’m glad it seems to be a British / US thing which the rest of the world doesn’t do.

Shinycat · 09/03/2020 10:20

BINGO!

'I have got a Hindu husband who doesn't find it racist and offensive. Therefore NO-ONE ELSE IS ALLOWED TO FIND IT OFFENSIVE, AND IF YOU DO, YOU'RE ALL WRONG!'

Do jog on love. Hmm

Agsags · 09/03/2020 10:23

She’s (and Boris) are BOTH shown as bulls because they’re being bullish in the face of Patel’s criticism of being a bully in parliament.

It’s nothing to do with religion or cows or race or sex.

Shinycat · 09/03/2020 10:25

@Everanewbie I completely agree with you. Media is sickeningly far-left, and they cry and cuss if you dare use the 'wrong' terminology or dare to say a single word against a POC. But these same people will happily slate and berate right wing people, and are often vile about them, and the far-left laugh and joke about how funny it is.

Remember when Jo Brand said she would happily throw acid in Nigel Farage's face, and we were all supposed to find it hilarious? Imagine if Boris Johnson had said he wanted to throw acid in Meghan Markle's face? He would be hounded out of the country.

I heard something a while back that made me laugh (after the Conservatives won the General election December ...)

"The far-left control the press, the far-left control social media,, and the far-left control TV........"

"They do not control the ballot boxes."

So no matter how the far-left shout at everyone, there are more people who are NOT like them. As all the elections keep proving.Wink

I find the far-right abhorrent, but I find the far-left equally abhorrent. They are equally as irksome, and as narrow-minded and bigoted as each other.
