Priti Patel Cartoon

Everanewbie · 09/03/2020 09:44

Whatever you think of her politics, AIBU to feel that the Guardian, and left wing commentators display disgusting hypocracy in their treatment of politicians in the centre-right, especially when female or of colour, in thius case Home Secretary Priti Patel?

Diane Abbott has been targetted by the most foul abuse, which is rightly highlighted and condemned, however claims of abuse are fired back when her views, consistency, politics and competance are questioned. But if the person in question is more of a centre-right pursuasion, they seem to be fair game.

Do jog on love

God forbid someone posts an opinion that differs from yours 🙄

Mydogatemypurse · 09/03/2020 10:29

Is it not reference to their bullish and bullying behaviour? Aggressively confident in their stance?

FishCanFly · 09/03/2020 10:29

she's a politician. politicians are subject to all sorts of ridicule, that's public right. part of a job. don't like it - find another job.

and she's disgusting.

Shinycat · 09/03/2020 10:32

@SoupDragon

Do read the posts properly!

It's clear from the post by @Poorolddaddypig that because her Indian Hindu husband doesn't find the cartoon offensive, that no-one else should either.

I get fucked off with people thinking if they or someone they know finds something inoffensive that no-one else should be offended by it either.

This cartoon - poking at Priti Patel - is disgustingly vile and racist.

Summersunandoranges · 09/03/2020 10:32

The guardian did a piece about her not so long ago I think it was something like

how did British Indians become so prominent in the Conservative party

How the fuck can that not be seen as racist? I don’t like her views but because she is Indian, female and right wing her ethnicity is fair game. Can you imagine if it said ‘Jewish or Muslim?

The guardian is seen as the most left wing papers and decimates anybody who isn’t seen to be ‘liberal’ and ‘kind’ but they are allowed to get away with head lines and articles like this.

Tbh I think the whole newspaper is run by hypocritical misogynistic racist men

Shinycat · 09/03/2020 10:34

It's also clear that if this cartoon was about a LEFT WING female, there would be uproar, but because she's a Tory, she is fair game.

Disgusting, and disingenuous, and pretty typical of the bigoted far-left.

mencken · 09/03/2020 10:37

the cartoon on the twitter feed was cropped to cut out Johnson, giving the impression that only Patel was being mocked. They were both mocked in the same way.

And both deserve it in my opinion.

Everanewbie · 09/03/2020 10:39

mencken should labour politicians have to endure the same mockery, or is it just conservatives, of which you disagree, that are deserving?

@Summersunandoranges can you link to that piece?

Clearly racist - Image of Brahman:The Sacred Cow;

hahsarchibull2018.wordpress.com/2018/09/20/brahman-the-sacred-cow/

From the Metro:

"Politics lecturer Adrian Hilton tweeted: ‘Good grief, I hadn’t seen this derogatory caricature of a ‘sacred cow’, lampooning Priti Patel’s Indian/Hindu heritage. Why does Kath Viner @guardian not consider this to be an expression of religious/racial “hate”?’"

"The British Tamil Conservatives added: ‘This cartoon is offensive on every level.–It’s anti-Hindu. It portrays the Home Secretary, of Hindu origin as a cow. A sacred symbol for Hindus.–Its racist and – misogynist. It’s plainly unacceptable! It may constitute a hate crime.’"

"Others claimed the cartoon showed a double standard, saying there would have been a public outcry if a left-wing BAME politician had been portrayed in such a way."

AutumnRose1 · 09/03/2020 10:42

Glad you said this OP

I was quite upset by that cartoon but the hypocrisy of the guardian...

derxa · 09/03/2020 10:42

I'm sure the cartoon is racist and I bet that Priti won't be that bothered.

GCAcademic · 09/03/2020 10:44

The Guardian cannot cope with BAME people who are not left wing. If anyone who is not white is not a Labour supporter, the Guardian reveals itself to be every bit as racist as the Daily Mail.

It published a deeply unpleasant article last week about East African Asians (and their descendants) who have the temerity not to vote Labour. It clearly believes that all people whose skin is not white must think alike - and if they do not, they are somehow defective.

LadyMadderRose · 09/03/2020 10:44

Hmm I think it's a bit of a knotty problem. A clearly unpleasant politician, who has paid people off to shut them up about her mistreatment of them in the past, and who looks as if she may be unfit for her post, should expect to have critical cartoons made about them. Steve Bell is absolutely merciless in mocking and satirising all kinds of politicians and showing them as monsters, animals, body parts etc and has been doing that for decades.

BUT if they are of an ethnic minority, then people are going to find racism in that wherever they possibly can. It may not have been intentional. BJ is shown as an actual arse as well as a bull. PP is shown as a bull, referencing bullishness, bully etc. She absolutely hasn't been treated any more offensively than him in that sense.

BUT THEN covert, subtle or unconscious racism could have led him to do that either knowingly to be extra provocative, or without consciously thinking about it but making the association. So someone in Bell's position should think and examine what they're trying to do and say and challenge themselves about whether there's a racist element, or even something that could be turned into one even if unintentional.

It's a shame he didn't think about that both because it might upset people, and because it takes away from satirising her as he should have done.

Finallyatooth · 09/03/2020 10:47

I like Priti Patel and I think she has been the victim of some unfair treatment in the media, the bullying row for example hasn't been accurately reported and some interesting details have been left out.

I've also been frustrated by her treatment by left-wing Twitter, I saw people rushing to say that her poor treatment couldn't be due to racism - I've no idea how they can claim it isn't even a possibility.

I'm not sure I agree with the premise that this cartoon is offensive however in this particular case. Particularly as Boris is also depicted as a bull, I think it's just meant to show them as 'bullish'.

Could it have been better thought through - yes probably.

Chocolatedaim · 09/03/2020 10:48

Wonderfully said lady

IntermittentParps · 09/03/2020 10:49

Is it not reference to their bullish and bullying behaviour? Aggressively confident in their stance?

That's how I read it too. I think if the Home Sec was a white woman (or man) they'd have done the same cartoon, and no one would have said it was racist then.

LuluJakey1 · 09/03/2020 10:51

I don't think it is racist but I do think it is a poor cartoon. It makes a commonly made point about Johnson and Patel in a very unsubtle way that is not intelligently constructed.

The Guardian should be ashamed to publish work of this quality. Suggests to me an editor not doing a good job. It should never have been allowed through.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 09/03/2020 10:51

My first thought was it's because she's like a bull in a China shop. I didn't know she was Hindu but I'm surprised she has any religion at all.

Shinycat · 09/03/2020 10:53

I think the Guardian are foul tbh.

Easily as bad as the Daily Mail.

Hingeandbracket · 09/03/2020 10:55

centre-right

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

LuluJakey1 · 09/03/2020 10:55

I think, as a society, we are unclear about what is racist, anti-semitic, Islamophobic and transphobic. It leads to arguments like this, the madness of the actions of the Labour Party in suspending Trevor Phillips today and their failure to act on anti-semitism, and all of the trans rights rows currently.

LuluJakey1 · 09/03/2020 10:58

Shinycat That is the most ridiculous remark about The Guardian. Nothing is as appalling as the Daily Mail in terms of offensive, biased, inaccurate, misleading, low-quality journalism in British mainstream newspapers.

Ydl22 · 09/03/2020 11:00

As a Hindu, with Indian parents, this bothers me. This is massively offensive. They’ve deliberately chosen a cow to represent her, a sacred animal in Hinduism. As a child, I would get a lot of cow ‘jokes’ made to me. We all know it’s racist and shouldn’t be there

LaurieMarlow · 09/03/2020 11:02

I think Priti is a class A arsehole and I literally can find anything good to say about her.

But yes, that’s racist and the Guardian should be ashamed of printing it.
