To enjoy smoking?

I've been trying to quit for a while and I have come to the realisation that I actually just enjoy smoking a lot. It gives me a break from the chaos. Anyone else felt the same way?

OP posts:
NoRoomInBed · 09/03/2020 09:35

Currently having a fag. Enjoying the sun in my garden getting 5 mins peace from the toddler. Dads with him.

I think when I try to quit it's the 5 mins break I get that I miss the most.

bingbangbing · 09/03/2020 09:36

Ex smoker here.

Of course you're not unreasonably to enjoy it. Smoking is lovely. That's why people do it.

Miss it a lot!

Bread999 · 09/03/2020 09:39

Smoking is lovely

Hmm
bellinisurge · 09/03/2020 09:42

Of course you love it. But .......
My mum started aged 14 and gave up (after several attempts over her life) at aged 80. She lived another 6 years.
It was a horrible way to die. She missed her fags too. The simple rituals were particularly important to her.

SassenachWitch · 09/03/2020 09:42

Same here, I’d rather not smoke if I’m honest, but I do and I enjoy it.

It’s the breaks for me too, 5 mins peace

OkMaybeNot · 09/03/2020 09:43

Yanbu to enjoy whatever you want.

I don't understand, as I've never smoked, how people are ok with smelling foul though.

Whatsmyname26 · 09/03/2020 09:45

My mum and my aunt both died at 60 due to smoking related cancer. There is no question that it was the smoking that led to their death. It is not a fun way to die and is not fun for your family to witness. For these reasons yabu!

Blondefancy · 09/03/2020 09:46

To the poster above..you don’t notice the smell when you’re a smoker, or the smell on other people. I’m an ex smoker now and after a week of not smoking (it’s been over a year now!) I started to notice the smell again..

easyandy101 · 09/03/2020 09:46

Gave up from 40 a day about 6 years ago but you're not wrong

I don't miss it as such but do remember it fondly, that first cig of the day 😍

bingbangbing · 09/03/2020 09:47

@Bread999

Why the face? Why else do you think people do it? It's lovely, it's enjoyable, it's calming. It's five minutes out of your day, it's a little meditation.

It also slowly kills you and those around you.

Snaketime · 09/03/2020 09:47

Same here OP. I keep trying to give up but dont get the same 5 mins of peace if I dont smoke.

youareatwatadmitit · 09/03/2020 09:49

Daughter of a life long 20 a day (at least) smoker here.
It's not lovely watching my mum die of incurable lung cancer.
It's not lovely that she put me at risk, over and over again, for years.
My mums face isn't all that lovely either, if I'm honest. The deep 'sucky' lines round her mouth. Yellowed teeth. Generally a lot more haggard than a non smoking woman of the same age.

But hey, you do you!

golddustwomen · 09/03/2020 09:49

Same here. I would rather not smoke but there's no chance of me quitting whilst I still really enjoy it.

Shmithecat2 · 09/03/2020 09:50

YANBU. I LOVED smoking.

SerenDippitty · 09/03/2020 09:50

It’s calming because it’s your need for a fag that’s making you anxious in the first place - it’s the nicotine receptors in your brain.

Mittens030869 · 09/03/2020 09:51

OkMaybeNot

As I understand it, smokers don't even notice the smell. (I have to take their word for it, having never smoked myself.)

I'm in no position to judge, though, as I drink alcohol for the same reason other people smoke, because I enjoy it. And I've struggled with my weight over the years because chocolate does the same thing for me

OchAyeThaNoo · 09/03/2020 09:51

I'm an ex-smoker. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Each and every fight was a joy.

Now I don't smoke any more the smell is absolutely vile. It's so strange that I never cared when I did smoke but now it turns my stomach. It stinks so badly.

fluffyblackcloud · 09/03/2020 09:53

It’s disgusting. My partner smokes and even when he has brushed his teeth there is a lingering stench which makes me not want to kiss him.

OchAyeThaNoo · 09/03/2020 09:53

Fight? Ciggy**

Sammi38 · 09/03/2020 09:53

Not unreasonable. I stopped smoking 3 months ago after a 20 year habit, I really miss it though, I won’t start again, but I do miss having a fag when I’m anxious or down or stressed.

I know you’re not looking for ways of stopping, but just to add, after trying everything going, including hypnosis, NRT, the Allen Carr book, the only thing that helped me kick this habit was champix. I had to have a bit of extra monitoring as I am prone to depression, but this really did work for me.

WwfLeopard · 09/03/2020 09:54

I loved smoking, but hated the addiction, the feeling of running low and NEEDING to get to the shops in snow storms and the like. I also hated the cost. I still smoke on my birthday

Oysterbabe · 09/03/2020 09:55

It's only nice because of the addiction. In his book Allan Carr compares it to wearing shoes that are too small so that you can enjoy the relief of taking them off.

redwoodmazza · 09/03/2020 09:57

I hate it when I'm out an about and a smoker walks past me! Yuck. Such a horrible smell. Don't they realise?

Fluffybutter · 09/03/2020 09:58

Smoking is gross , don’t miss it at all

BertieBotts · 09/03/2020 09:58

I like it too, but don't smoke at the moment as I have a small toddler who is around me pretty much constantly, and I don't want him breathing in second hand smoke. Plus I have a preteen and I really don't want to normalise it for him, so that's me not smoking for the next 10 years or so, and by then DS2 will be a preteen so I'll have the same issue!

If I still remember it fondly after that I might indulge occasionally. I expect in 20 years time though it will be either totally banned or so expensive it's not worth it. Perhaps I'll vape cannabis instead :o
