How to share apartment cost ....

ferrier · 09/03/2020 01:43

Two bed apartment. Shared bathroom, kitchen and lounge area. Couple sharing one room. Single in the other. Couple want to share the cost 50:50, ie they pay £50 and the single pays £50. Single thinks it should be more like £40 for the single and £60 for the double.
YANBU - the single has it right.
YABU - the couple have it right. Pay per bedroom.

Bills (such as water, electricity etc) need to be split in 3 as 2 people do not use the same of the above as 1 person. I would say council tax should be 50:50 as this price doesn’t go up just because there is a 3rd adult. I’m not sure about rent as it depends on the size of the bedrooms and if the other areas are going to be shared equally (in terms of furniture, time spent in living room etc)

HeronLanyon · 09/03/2020 08:28

60/40 rent. Although there is an argument for 50/50.
All Bills split 3 ways.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/03/2020 08:29

Are both the bedrooms double rooms?

TheTrollFairy · 09/03/2020 08:29

Cross post.
Does the cost of the holiday change if it’s just 2 of you compared to 3 of you? If no, then I think 50:50 is fair (unless of course you picked a more expensive holiday let to include a couple)

HeronLanyon · 09/03/2020 08:30

Oh just read this is a holiday - 50/50.
60/40 plus bills divided by 3 was based on long term living arrangement.

Oysterbabe · 09/03/2020 08:30

50/50 rent and 3 ways everything else.

ferrier · 09/03/2020 08:33

So sharing the living space and the bathroom with two other people doesn't count for anything?
Single gets apartment for 50 and couple for 25 each?

OP posts:
EmpressJewel · 09/03/2020 08:36

60:40 is fairest.

Are you part of the couple, OP?

IdleLiz · 09/03/2020 08:41

Holiday apartment should be split by number of adults, not rooms.

I'd reconsider going if they are taking the piss already.

cstaff · 09/03/2020 08:45

A holiday should be divided three ways.

R2519 · 09/03/2020 08:46

Holiday = split 3 ways.....very unfair not to tbh!

Renting = split bulls 3 ways. Single room and double room would differ in price so 60:40 would probably be easiest and fairest

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/03/2020 08:49

Holiday we split by number of rooms, that way childfree couples aren't penalised. Any other costs then split per adult. So 50/50 and third for meals out, supplies, etc.

50% of a two bed apartment is almost always a much better deal than 100% of a one bed apartment...

ferrier · 09/03/2020 08:59

Why is a holiday so different to renting.?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 09:02

...and the bedrooms are of equal size.

Split 3 ways then IMO.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 09:03

50% of a two bed apartment is almost always a much better deal than 100% of a one bed apartment...

That applies equally to the couple. So split it 3 ways.

SoupDragon · 09/03/2020 09:04

(1/3 for each person in the couple rather than 50%, obviously.)

HeronLanyon · 09/03/2020 09:08

I think a holiday is per room. So 50/50. If it had been a long term apartment rental then wear and tear and use of communal areas by the couple would indicate to me something like a 60/40 split plus bills split in 3.
That’s the difference for me.

Palavah · 09/03/2020 09:15

Holiday - rooms same size - per night hire cost 50:50 but 3 ways on booking fee, cleaning fee, and groceries.

Otherwise 60:40

MaggieFS · 09/03/2020 09:17

Getting to technical to actually work it out, but what would it cost the couple of they didn't need the extra bedroom for the single person? I think the issue is holiday accom is often priced based on number of bedrooms. So agree, not fair they get such a reduced rate, but how it is.

Digitalash · 09/03/2020 09:20

Holiday should be split 3 ways. Why should one person pay twice what the others pay simply because they arent sleeping with someone.

firstimemamma · 09/03/2020 09:27

"Clarification - sorry I didn't make it clear. It's a holiday and the bedrooms are of equal size"

Well that changes my answer completely! I no longer think 40:60 and instead think 50:50. The rooms are the same size.

Clymene · 09/03/2020 09:30

I'd split 60:40 or not go with them.

Otherwise you're basically subbing their holiday.

Lippy1234 · 09/03/2020 09:32

3 people are sharing a holiday apartment so 1/3 each. If three friends went on holiday I wouldn’t expect one to pay for half an apartment and the other two for only quarter of an apartment.
If you were staying in a hotel then the single person pays for their room and the couple for their own room. It’s not two hotel rooms, it’s an apartment.

TemoraryUsername · 09/03/2020 09:36

Even on holiday there will be things like waiting for potentially two people to use the bathroom if not en suite. 2/3 of fridge space vs 1/3. Single person only gets 1/3 of the voting rights what to watch on TV etc. Single person gets to feel slightly awkward but claim to be just fiiine with any PDA.

I can see the arguments against 50/50 and 66/33 so I think 60/40 is a good middle ground. Couple are still paying less per head than the single person tight bastards to reflect them sharing a room but everything else about staying in that apartment (communal living areas) is three people sharing so 50/50 is not fair on the single person.

TemoraryUsername · 09/03/2020 09:40

If there were no couples and they were twin rooms, two would sleep in one twin room or one on the sofa bed and the cost would still be split 1/3 each. That's normal for any shared holiday I've ever known.
