"Treat Mum to a restful night"

The Mother's day promotion emails have started hitting my inbox... The White Company is all about treating your mum to a good sleep by buying expensive pjs....

I can't help but think this would never be the message in father's day promotion. It's a bit depressing that "sleep" is the most indulgent thing you can treat your mum to 🙄

When all the Father's Day promotion will be about beers, football, gardening and other hobbies. A Mum's hobby is sleep??

But actually very truthful. How many times have I not read here Mumsnet about men who never ever get up when their children wake up at night? Whol never let the mum sleep in the morning but insists on that right for himself?

WalkingDeadTrainee · 08/03/2020 09:39

Have you read MN? Sleep IS the most indulgent thing apparently.
Every time there is a child thread my ovaries and I agree that this is a bog nope. MN, the best contraception

DropYourSword · 08/03/2020 09:40

It's a bit depressing that "sleep" is the most indulgent thing you can treat your mum to

Meh. That’s the thing I was most desperate for in the first 18 months. ¯\(ツ)/¯.

Cacaca · 08/03/2020 09:42

It’s really not worth getting offended over - it’s marketing - it’s what they do. They’ve got you talking about it.

doadeer · 08/03/2020 09:45

Yes I understand it's marketing, I work in retail marketing myself. I just find it depressing that women are marketed sleep and men are marketed "fun things"

Pah, I'm a mum but all my kids are over 20.

I sleep for over nine hours a night these days, with nobody to disturb me except the dog. I'd still like a pair of White Company pjs for Mothers' Day though.

elenacampana · 08/03/2020 09:51

The last thing I would expect to see from The White Company is advertising for beers, gardening and football. Gorgeous pyjamas however, does sound rather a lot like their MO.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 08/03/2020 09:52

So what did white company promote for father's day?

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/03/2020 09:53

God that looks amazing. I love sleep. DH would agree. He doesn’t like beer, gardening or sport but loves comfy clothes and a lie in.

Prepenultimate · 08/03/2020 09:54

I hate mother's day anyway. Oh give her a cupcake once a year and she'll carry on sacrificing her wishes/ wants/ needs/ time/ career cos that's what "good mums" do- put themselves last.

PurpleFlower1983 · 08/03/2020 09:55

I would love some uninterrupted sleep and a nice indulgent lie in. Some White Company PJs would be gratefully received.

lovepickledlimes · 08/03/2020 09:58

But to a lot of women pampering themselves is fun. It is fun to be able to have a nice long bath, early night and get up late etc

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 08/03/2020 10:02

I agree with you actually. It implies that the rest of the time, being a mum is about having no sleep and the father should only chip in with sleep for a special occasion or to help the mum out 'as a treat'. It doesn't really make you think that most couples share lie ins and take turns with night wakings etc

JonnyPocketRocket · 08/03/2020 10:06

Wait, White Company make pyjamas that enable you to get a good night of sleep?? Finally! Nightwear that comes with an integrated night nanny to do all the baby's wake-ups, and industrial-strength earplugs to drown out the neighbour's infernal dog. I'll take two!

lovepickledlimes · 08/03/2020 10:06

@OoohTheStatsDontLie see I don't think they mean normal sleep but a treat sleep so getting up at 11 and having had a lie in preferably with breakfast in bed. Then once that is done a nice day until having a nice 1-2 hour bath and being in bed by 10 with the ipad and watching a movie etc and some popcorn or wine etc

0lapislazuli · 08/03/2020 10:13

I agree it’s being marketed wrong. A restful night isn’t a treat that mums shouldn’t have every night. It’s essential for health and well-being. The products are nice enough, but they just shouldn’t have mentioned that sleeping is a luxury!

WalkingDeadTrainee · 08/03/2020 10:17

Restful sleep is a luxury even for non parents tbf. There is a sleep and there is the "OMG I feel like a person!" sleep.

lovepickledlimes · 08/03/2020 10:17

@WalkingDeadTrainee totally agree

WalkingDeadTrainee · 08/03/2020 10:19

Also. Again. What did they market for father's day?
When all the Father's Day promotion will be about beers, football, gardening and other hobbies. A Mum's hobby is sleep??
From what I found on their page the suggestions were unisex bathrobe, oven pot thing and pepper mill....

Alsohuman · 08/03/2020 10:20

I’m an insomniac with only adult children. An unbroken night’s sleep is the biggest luxury imaginable for me. Hope someone buys me those magic pjs.

bingbangbing · 08/03/2020 10:20

Being a mother is partly about getting sod all sleep for at least the first six months.

More so than for Dads. Some Dads do night wakings if the baby is bottle fed.

Sod all point if breastfeeding though.

I hate this idea that motherhood and fatherhood are the same.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 10:21

What else do you expect from The White Company when their main products are focused on bedding, pyjamas, loungewear, pillow sprays, relaxing restful peaceful products?! They’re hardly going to say Treat Mum to a bottle of Prosecco when they don’t sell it are they?

Find offence elsewhere OP, it’s not here that’s for sure.

Ethelfleda · 08/03/2020 10:23

YANBU OP
I find these particular stereotypes beyond tiresome.

Butterwhy · 08/03/2020 10:23

I agree to be honest. The white company sells loads of lovely stuff, plenty of opportunities to focus on other things, other than sleep.
