Severe toothache! Help!

Fruitbatdancer · 07/03/2020 18:53

AIbu to take more than recommenced dose of painkillers? Not massesnobviously!
Normally fit and well, wel overweight but you know what I mean. Don’t take any other medication.
Have toothache so severe want to claw own face off. Had root canal pre Xmas and suspect same tooth. Assume abscess? But can’t get to dentist till Monday obviously.
I’ve got Clive oil, barely touches it (vile taste distracts for seconds) went to get nurofen plus (my normal go to) but because of coronavirus bollocks panic buying was none so got cocodamol which works mildly for approx 2 hours. Taking ibuprofen 2 hours after cocodamol but for 2 hours in 4 am in searing rip own face off pain.
Even red wine isn’t helping.
Help.
Can I leave less time between doses? How I’ll sleep I don’t know. Walk in clinic at local doctors tomorrow so plan on going there to see if better painkillers.
Did the 111 online thing (appreciate they are busy so didn’t call) they advise “see dentist in next 24 hours”
God childbirth was easier than this.
😭😭😭

Clove not Clive. Although if Clive was dentist I’d have him!

I burned my gum badly with clove oil, be careful. If you've maxed the ibuprofen and paracetamol you can take, try an antihistamine.

WrongKindOfFace · 07/03/2020 18:58

Honestly, ring 111 and book an emergency appointment. It’s quite possibly a separate department anyway to book a dental appointment.

wobblywinelover · 07/03/2020 18:58

I'm sorry you're going through this OP but do you really think anyone is going to advise you to take more than the recommended dosage of painkillers? I would seriously doubt it! Whatever you do is at your own risk really, but I do hope you feel better soon

Letsbegin · 07/03/2020 18:58

Have you searched for an emergency dentist in your area. If you call 111 they can give you contact numbers for the local emergency dentists. What are are you in? Try warm salt water rinses. Is there swelling? Dont take more than recommended as will not help and just cause liver damage. Try cold compress on face if swelling.

Letsbegin · 07/03/2020 18:59

Area^

Darbs76 · 07/03/2020 18:59

Call 111, my A&E has an emergency dentist. They can advise you where one is

Butteredtoast55 · 07/03/2020 19:00

Sympathies, Fruitbat, toothache is THE WORST! I’m not sure about the painkillers but I am pretty sure you can take both ibuprofen and cocodamol together which might help. Also try mouthwash in with warm water and brushing your teeth as this gave me a bit of relief when I last had toothache. Does your dentist have emergency on call?

MrsSnitchnose · 07/03/2020 19:00

You don't want to be overdosing. I've been there so I know how you're feeling. The advice on the NHS page is to call your dentist and see if their answerphone advises where to get out if hours treatment or call 111. They may be busy but I think you should call anyway, speaking to a person may give you more information than an automated website.

In the meantime, the only thing that worked for me was swilling my mouth with brandy. Didn't drink it, just moved it round my mouth and spat it out. Presume any spirit would do. Numbs the area for a while. Hope you manage to get some relief Flowers

romany4 · 07/03/2020 19:03

Orajel.
Fantastic stuff. Numbs it completely

Fruitbatdancer · 07/03/2020 19:05

Thanks all, and I know IABU to ask about the pain killers but just at end of rope. I’ll try anything. Dentist just says open 8am Monday. And I know from experience any dentist is unlikely to touch me if they think it’s infected they’ll want infection to clear first 😭 god it’s awful.

Have you got any oralgel? Or turmeric? When I have tooth ache I always make a paste from turmeric and it works. Tastes awful but so worth it.

Kannet · 07/03/2020 19:10

Try putting your toothbrush in very hot water and then put it over the tooth. It really helps.

TheWordmeister · 07/03/2020 19:10

I have no advice but toothache from an abscess is the worst thing in the world, so you have my sympathy.

You need antibiotics! But you know that...

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/03/2020 19:12

Try swilling neat alcohol round your mouth and spitting it out

Do it a few times

Fruitbatdancer · 07/03/2020 19:14

Now an hour into the cocodamol and have some relief. Going to try to think more clearly and send husband to 24 hour pharmacy before I get the two hour rage 😭😭😭

Elieza · 07/03/2020 19:14

Swilling hot water or cold water can help?

When you do get your appointment they can jab you up with numbing so you can’t feel the pain and remove the filling if it’s been root treated and there is pressure inside?

Fruitbatdancer · 07/03/2020 19:14

Will he gets orajel at pharmacy?

OP posts:
thistimeisshort · 07/03/2020 19:15

I have bad facial pain caused by a health condition at times and I take 3-4 ibuprofen depending on the severity. Nothing else touches it. I would take 4 ibuprofen and then two paracetamol 2 hours later and alternate. You couldn't do this long term obviously but for a few days it won't kill you.

bakingcupcakes · 07/03/2020 19:16

I came on to say oragel. You can get it at the pharmacy over the counter.

thistimeisshort · 07/03/2020 19:17

I just read that you're overweight, you'll probably handle 4 at a time even better then.

DuploTower · 07/03/2020 19:19

What strength cocodamol?

Do not take more than recommended paracetamol as can really damage liver easily and won't help with pain.

can you phone 111 and ask for strong codeine or cocodamol to pick up? (Assuming you're taking over the counter strength)

user1019273703 · 07/03/2020 19:20

Orajel here too. I had a massive infection and can sympathise. Hope you get sorted OP

Fruitbatdancer · 07/03/2020 19:22

Just had a look and the cocodamol I got have 8mg of codine v’s nurofen plus which day they have 12.5mg. I’m guessing at low levels maybe why cocodamol not hiring a lot. Bloody coronavirus panic buying.
