Severe toothache! Help!

AIbu to take more than recommenced dose of painkillers? Not massesnobviously!
Normally fit and well, wel overweight but you know what I mean. Don’t take any other medication.
Have toothache so severe want to claw own face off. Had root canal pre Xmas and suspect same tooth. Assume abscess? But can’t get to dentist till Monday obviously.
I’ve got Clive oil, barely touches it (vile taste distracts for seconds) went to get nurofen plus (my normal go to) but because of coronavirus bollocks panic buying was none so got cocodamol which works mildly for approx 2 hours. Taking ibuprofen 2 hours after cocodamol but for 2 hours in 4 am in searing rip own face off pain.
Even red wine isn’t helping.
Help.
Can I leave less time between doses? How I’ll sleep I don’t know. Walk in clinic at local doctors tomorrow so plan on going there to see if better painkillers.
Did the 111 online thing (appreciate they are busy so didn’t call) they advise “see dentist in next 24 hours”
God childbirth was easier than this.
😭😭😭

Oh god I really feel for you. Worst pain! Bonjela (be careful as its got ibuprofen in it). Anaesthetic throatspray will help. I used to swill the area in a bit of calpol and kids nurofen to hit it directly. Warm water and salt. I really really hope its easing for you.

I just read that you're overweight, you'll probably handle 4 at a time even better then

Please do not listen to this.

And don’t encourage people to overdose on paracetamol. Otherwise she will be spending 24 hours on a NAC infusion in hospital. Take max 4g of paracetamol in 24 hours. And yes a supratherapeutic ingestion over a few days CAN kill you

If you have an abscess, it will need draining. If you have infection, you will need antibiotics. So going to a NHS emergency dentist today will be worth it. Ring 111 for the nearest dentist.

JJSS123 · 07/03/2020 19:29

I think you can take extra ibuprofen because can’t the doctors prescribe stronger doses anyway?

hedwigismyowl · 07/03/2020 19:37

My dad was prescribed 800mg of ibuprofen for his joint pain. Normal ibuprofen tablets are 200mg so I would say yes, take more ibuprofen but not on an empty stomach

SinkGirl · 07/03/2020 19:43

I had three abscesses last year, waiting for teeth to be removed under sedation which is next week (thank god).

Orajel is great but make sure the 20% stuff from behind the counter, not the weaker stuff out on the shelf. Rinsing with hot salt water helps. They told me I shouldn’t put heat packs on my face but at a few points I did because it was the only thing that helped

When at the pharmacy see if they have any Paramol - expensive so more likely to be in stock. It’s paracetamol and dihydracodeine, much stronger than the cocodamol you can buy over the counter. That plus ibuprofen it should help. I also got some naproxen (stronger anti inflammatory) to use when it was really bad

Definitely try to get an emergency dentist appointment tomorrow - if you can get antibiotics tomorrow things will start getting better.

Tfoot75 · 07/03/2020 19:50

See an emergency dentist as soon as you can. One near me (Birmingham) is open til 11pm. Private, but when I had same problem only charged me £30 including the script for antibiotics so basically same as NHS.

I had an abscess in September very similar to this, painkillers only lasted 2 hours. I did take them every 2 hours alternating cocodamol and ibuprofen. I usually am unable to take codeine as it makes me dizzy, but that time I just slept in between pain for 3 days. It was agonizing.

I had the tooth out after a week or so, it was still very painful after that for a few days, not at all instant relief that many people say. But only antibiotics will improve it at this point so go to emergency dentist ASAP, gp won't prescribe for tooth.

BikeRunSki · 07/03/2020 19:57

Swilling with mouthwash can help.
I am rather familiar with dental pain.

Tulipvase · 07/03/2020 19:59

I found that lemsip helped my toothache better than plain paracetamol. I took it with ibuprofen.

mrsbyers · 07/03/2020 20:04

I would ring 111 infection can be dangerous if left unchecked and they should be able to get you seen quickly and prescribed antibiotics

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 07/03/2020 20:05

If you can get into an emergency dentist get into an emergency dentist.

Is there any swelling? Whether it's an abscess or toothache it needs treatment. The only reason you might not extract a tooth with an abscess is because it's hard to get them numb, but a dentist should still try to get it numb. If theres an abscess it should still be drained even if you can't get the tooth numb the soft tissues will go numb enough to drain. Don't let a dentist just give you antibiotics. If you can get it drained that will give you instant relief

In terms of pain relief you could try 600mg of ibuprofen alternated with co-codamol. That's the most really, obviously don't take more than daily dose of paracetemol.

Corsodyl isn't going to provide pain relief, oragel might if it's an abscess but really your traditional paracetemol/ibuprofen are the best painkillers for toothache.

Hope you get it sorted OP Flowers

Teacup34 · 07/03/2020 20:11

Please be careful with your painkillers I no how badly an abscess can hurt it's easy to get carried away to make the pain stop I've been there you have my sympathy 💐. I found putting a hot flannel or one of those microwavable wheat bags on my cheek on the side where it hurts and applying pressure to it helped ease the pain also as pp poster said brushing teeth can help. When you do get an appointment they will give you antibiotics as you know but they can also give you a prescription for strong pain killers while you wait for the infection to clear. I hope you feel better soon! Imo it hurts worse than childbirth!!

Teacup34 · 07/03/2020 20:14

Also forgot to add that you could try sleeping propped up ( if you manage to sleep) as if it's an abscess it will hurt more if you lie flat.
