How often do you drink alcohol?

Poptart4 · 07/03/2020 14:19

I drink 4 nights a week.

Sometimes I'll have just 1 or 2 drinks to unwind after a long day, sometimes abit more (weekends).

Just curious to see where I stand compared to everyone else?

Never.

MajesticWhine · 07/03/2020 21:13

2 or 3 nights a week. Usually Friday and Saturday nights + one other if there's something going on.

cheapskatemum · 07/03/2020 21:14

I think I've had 2 alcoholic drinks this year: half a pint of local cider & a small glass of wine. After 4 pregnancies & breastfeeding, I didn't have much tolerance. Then last year I started a low carb diet. This year DH stopped drinking, so I just rarely touch the stuff.

The thing with any of these kind of threads is that they will always always always attract a significant mumber of puritanical responses.

So a thread asking about how much screen time kids get - lots of people will respond with comments like ‘sometimes half an hour a week’ or ‘ooh, maybe one movie at the end of term, nothing else, we like to encourage other activities’

How often have you given dc calpol or nurofen - oh gosh dd once had calpol three years ago, ds never, my kids don’t tend to get ill!

How much sweet stuff do you eat as a family - nothing really, the kids might be allowed an organic hemp chocolate bar on Christmas Day if it’s raining

How often do you drink alcohol - goodness me only when the moon turns green and sings a song and then I might have half a lager.

Etc etc etc.

Whether you believe any of it is up to you, I always take any responses on these threads with a large pinch of salt!

contentedsoul · 07/03/2020 21:17

I don't touch alcohol, at all...just don't like the taste...don't drink fizzy pop either....yep...I'm dull

AllInADay · 07/03/2020 21:21

Nothing puritanical here. I drink a couple of small glasses every night.

LettyBriggs · 07/03/2020 21:23

I’d say I average once a week. Sometimes it might be 3 nights a week, or I might go months without any alcohol. I rarely get drunk.

limpbizkit · 07/03/2020 21:24

Nothing puritanical about me drinking zero due to being a recovered alky Grin

Limaloma1 · 07/03/2020 21:35

I live alone with my son, so don't drink at home. But I will if I'm round at my friend's house or out for drinks. Maybe 1 or 2 times a month. My hangovers are getting to be ridiculous now even with 2 or 3 drinks 😩🤮 so that puts me off too. My parent's didn't drink very much either so I wonder if that contributes to it. My ex used to always have to drink Friday/Saturday Sunday night, it started to creep into Thursday nights too. He would drink until he was staggering about. I think his parents drink quite a lot so maybe its all normal to him.

motorcyclenumptiness · 07/03/2020 21:57

Never. Can't stand the taste, can't stand drunk people, can't stand the fact that it's killing my alcoholic sibling.

Shinycat · 08/03/2020 15:06

@Flymetothetoon

These threads always go the same way with the pious 'I rarely drink' types piling on and the rest of us who like drink staying stchum!

And these threads always go the same way, with the same posters projecting their insecurities, and making spiteful and snide comments about people who SHOCKER don't drink much alcohol Hmm

Some people actually do NOT drink alcohol more than once or twice a month you know. They simply don't! And they are not pious or smug PURELY because they say they don't drink much WHEN SOMEONE ASKS THE QUESTION!

And making snarky and catty remarks about them is not showing you in a good light at ALL! Hmm

These kind of threads clearly hit a raw nerve with you (and people like you, who obviously feel bad about the amount of alcohol you drink,) so why open them, and why respond? As I said, it's clearly hit a raw nerve, and has clearly upset you.

Vulpine · 08/03/2020 15:37

To be fair, no drinkers are saying they 'can't stand' sober people

Ragwort · 08/03/2020 15:44

Most nights I have a glass or two of wine with my evening meal. I don't go 'out' to drink, very happy to drink at home - cheaper and no driving issues.

Onlyherefortheconspiracies · 08/03/2020 16:05

Probably drink 4 times a week. Totally normal in my circle. I go out for dinner a lot and we always share a bottle. I'd love to get some weight off and I know it doesn't help but I really enjoy a drink.

DidoLamenting · 08/03/2020 16:09

I haven't seen any "puritanical responses"

I developed Crohn's disease just over a year ago and a side effect is I have lost all taste for alcohol. It's got nothing to do with being puritanical. I simply no longer get any pleasure from either its taste or its effect.

PurrBox · 08/03/2020 16:27

Statistics tell us that Britons, on average, are drinking the alcohol equivalent of 108 bottles of wine a year. Statistics also tell us that people habitually underreport their own drinking, by 40-60%.

PineappleDanish · 08/03/2020 16:29

Far less than I used to in my 20s. (I'm 46).

Last had wine at a friend's house a fortnight ago. (Quite a lot of it, mind you). Very rarely have wine in the house if it's just DH and I. More often on holiday - we're off to a self-catering cottage soon and will probably take a couple of bottles with us.

Northernsoullover · 08/03/2020 16:34

Never. I gave it up a year ago and I feel so much better. I'm not pious either. It was making me feel really crap so I had to get rid.

inmyshedsmoking2000 · 08/03/2020 16:35

3 or 4 times a year.

BlueJava · 08/03/2020 16:37

I'm tee total, I haven't drunk any alcohol for about 2.5 years.

Fizzypoo · 08/03/2020 18:00

I go through stages or drinking more regularly or not really drinking.

I like having a glass of wine with dinner in the evening. Sometimes I drink 2 to 3 glasses each evening, sometimes I go a month without a drink.

I drink more in summer as I like having a pink gin in the garden after work when pottering around and looking after my flowers. We tend to have a lot of spontaneous BBQs with friends which involves a few drinks. I also love being at the local pub in the summer. In October/November/January/February/March I drink very little if at all.

Do what works for you. If you like a drink have a drink, if you don't then don't. I'd rather eat what I want, drink what I want and enjoy my life than be constantly stopping myself. Other people they joy out of life in other ways.

couchlover · 08/03/2020 18:05

Yeah probably 4 nights a week. Usually Friday and Saturday its a fair bit, mid week maybe just 1 or two. Too much I know.

RiftGibbon · 08/03/2020 18:09

It varies. Generally once a week; one or two units. Sometimes twice to three times, but that would only be one drink.
This week I had a large glass of wine with a meal on Friday night, and a small g&t last night, again with a meal.
Generally, wine gives me a headache, gin doesn't.

housemdwaswrong · 08/03/2020 18:12

3-4times a year. Originally reduced due to necessary meds, buf now just don't fancy it. It's a habit not to drink as much as it is to drink I think. If you're comfortable and happy it doesn't matter what others do.
