For a house?

Am I being unreasonable thinking 13 degrees is too cold?

I'm freezing.

What's normal?

Yes that's ridiculously cold. Our heating is set at around 20 degrees.

DuploTower · 06/03/2020 21:40

I feel bad, because all afternoon I look forward to reading to the kids in bed with two hot water bottles and once they're asleep it's early but I just can't bring myself to get out of bed and go downstairs in the cold. I feel like a neglectful wife, my partner always seems so disappointed when I say I'm not coming down, but I just bloody can't.

19 is too cold.

TheLongDarkBreakfastTime · 06/03/2020 21:41

I was miserably cold after a few hours in a 16C house last week. In a jumper, with a hot water bottle and two thick blankets. So 13C is much too cold.

dappledsunshine · 06/03/2020 21:42

That is cold op. Is there a reason it's so cold?

Modestandatinybitsexy · 06/03/2020 21:43

We have a cold house but coldest it gets is probably 15 degrees. We have no heating after 9pm but it's on an hour before we get up and we're in bed by 10 before I notice it gets too cold.

There's only so many clothes you can wear and once you get the chill it's hard to shake. Why is your house so cold and why's it up to DH to decide the temperature?

BanginChoons · 06/03/2020 21:43

I keep mine on 18. Less than that is too cold.

peonylane · 06/03/2020 21:44

Ours is never below 20 and I find it's comfortable. 13 is very cold op.

AdoptAdaptImprove · 06/03/2020 21:45

We keep ours at 18 - 19C and even that feels a bit chilly tonight. I believe HSE recommends that workspaces should be kept above 16C, and when the boiler broke down at work, we were sent home when the temp dipped under 16. Your house will be prone to damp and condensation if you’re living, cooking and drying clothes in 13C, and for health reasons it’s advised to keep above 18C. All depending on your ability to pay for the energy needed, of course.

KnightandDay · 06/03/2020 21:46

20deg here is avg anything below would be cold.

QuixoticQuokka · 06/03/2020 21:47

I set mine at 17. I can tolerate 14, 13 is too cold.

AnyFucker · 06/03/2020 21:47

Are you going to tell us why your house is so cold, op ?

MaxNormal · 06/03/2020 21:48

That is absolutely freezing. I have mine at 22 at least so I'd not cope with that.

NailsNeedDoing · 06/03/2020 21:48

13 is way too cold.

nobodyimportant · 06/03/2020 21:49

Well official guidance is 16C minimum for a workplace (unless it's physical work) so I'd say anything less than that is definitely too cold.

woodencoffeetable · 06/03/2020 21:49

13 is too cold.
we have the thermostat at 15 over night but mostly it doesn't drop below 17.
17 is unpleasant in the morning on the way to the shower. brrr.

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 06/03/2020 21:49

I used to work for a chocolatier and the shop floor was refrigerated to 18 degrees, to ensure things wouldn't melt. It was ten degrees outside today, DS was wearing lined trousers, socks, boots, vest, long sleeve top, jumper and coat as well as hat and gloves. Is there a reason it's so cold is it temporary? Are your DC alright being that cold inside?

Darbs76 · 06/03/2020 21:50

We have 18 in day (so under 18 comes on) and under 20 until 8.30pm, then it’s off till 5.30

Playdoughbum · 06/03/2020 21:50

18/19 here. But I quite like the bedroom a bit colder overnight because of hot flushes Grin.
Sometimes my classroom drops to 16 and that’s not comfortable.
Why is it so cold?

RhymingRabbit3 · 06/03/2020 21:50

13 is far too cold. I notice when it goes below 20 in my house.

Syrinx89 · 06/03/2020 21:51

21.5 is great for my house (old, cold due to single glazed sash windows)

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 06/03/2020 21:51

Ours is 12/13 when we go to bed but too cold for the day. In the day it’s around 16/18

hawaiianturtle · 06/03/2020 21:52

Never under 23 here from 6am until we go to bed which varies. It's turned down to 19 while we sleep or when the house is empty. We have hive though so it's all done on our phones usually once we are already in bed or once we've left the house. I have no idea how you could cope in such a cold house but I am generally a very very cold person. My hot water bottle comes out with me all throughout winter.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/03/2020 21:54

I have mine at 24, I really feel the cold, but for most people I'd guess 16 absolute minimum.
13 is ridiculous.

Megan2018 · 06/03/2020 21:54

Upstairs usually around 18, downstairs 20+. Anything less is too bloody cold. But I don’t like overly hot bedrooms.
