How cold is too cold?

For a house?

Am I being unreasonable thinking 13 degrees is too cold?

I'm freezing.

What's normal?

OP posts:
KittenVsBox · 06/03/2020 21:55

My office used to be 14 or 15C on a Monday morning.
It was evil, and I hated Monday mornings all the more for it, and used to spend my first half hour ringing round all the maintenance guys til one picked up the phone and came and reset the building boiler. It took til after lunch to reach 18.
13 is miserable to be sitting around in (great for running in!)

LoisLittsLover · 06/03/2020 21:57

15 is comfortable for moving around doing house work etc, 17 or 18 for sitting around

DappledThings · 06/03/2020 21:58

Are you the same poster from the other day who was claiming no hearing was needed as copious amounts of tea were fine to keep warm?

A couple of people on there suggested the OP might actually be wanting the heating on but was scared of a partner and trying to gauge if it was normal. This sounds like it could be the same.

Hope you're ok.

KatharinaRosalie · 06/03/2020 21:58

Why is it so cold? Normal is 18-22.

Grobagsforever · 06/03/2020 22:00

Are you OK OP? Will your husband not 'let' you turn up heating?

BudgieHammockBananaSmuggler · 06/03/2020 22:01

Move details required otherwise this thread is just a tease

Elieza · 06/03/2020 22:01

FFS put the heating on and stop being a skinflint, it’s winter, you’re allowed to use heating, all your stuff will go mouldy in the dampness created by breathing/drying washing (which will take forever). Poor weans being raised in that, that’s just cruel.

dementedpixie · 06/03/2020 22:02

13⁰C is far too cold. Why is it not hotter in your house?

mineofuselessinformation · 06/03/2020 22:03

At 13 degrees, I'd have my coat on.

MadameF · 06/03/2020 22:08

16C night 18C day but I move around a lot. 13C is chilly.

ElbasAbsentPenis · 06/03/2020 22:08

Always 19 or 20 at my house. And I’m often in several jumpers and multiple pairs of woolly socks.

EmmiJay · 06/03/2020 22:08

Good grief. I could never! Mines is on 25 atm because I don't like cold!! I'll gladly pay extra to feel my feet and fingers.🤨

LaurieFairyCake · 06/03/2020 22:12

My bedroom is at 18, the rest of the house is 22

Marmit · 06/03/2020 22:14

That is far too cold. I generally keep my house at around 22, never really below 20.

megletthesecond · 06/03/2020 22:14

20 would be too cold.
Mine only goes that low when the boiler is broken.

nosleepp · 06/03/2020 22:15

That’s very cold

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/03/2020 22:17

I set the thermostat at 22. Once it switches off, it stays warm for a while.

I'm always reminded of a woman I worked with who insisted on setting the temperature at 14. I have low body temperature so used to get sent home an awful lot.

ScottishStottie · 06/03/2020 22:19

My work is connected with going into bars and reporting on equipment etc. A beer cellar (which needs to be cold) has an optimum temp of avout 13°. That is far too cold for a living space.

Tootletum · 06/03/2020 22:20

I work at home and don't like spending money so it's at 15 during the day and 18 at night.

mrsm43s · 06/03/2020 22:21

I WfH, and having done extensive research, 17.5 is the coolest that is comfortable when fairly static (i.e. sitting around), dressed sensibly with a jumper, warm socks and slippers etc, but not having to wrap yourself up in a duvet/wear a coat indoors etc. Probably need 21+ if you want to walk around bare foot in only a tshirt etc.

13 degrees not OK ever during the daytime. Fine to go that low (or even lower) overnight if you got into a warm bed and are fast asleep under a warm duvet, but really not OK as a temperature when awake.

beautifulxdisasters · 06/03/2020 22:25

We prefer it colder than average I think (our house is rarely above 18-19) but anything under 16 is chilly for us.

Is it your partner that insists on not putting the heating on?

If so, does he know that's what you don't come down from putting the kids to bed?

beautifulxdisasters · 06/03/2020 22:25

*why

cardibach · 06/03/2020 22:29

Is it actually 13 or is that the temperature the heating is set to kick in? My system has a thermometer and it hasn’t got below 17.5 yet this winter. That is too cold anyway, though.

SinglePringle · 06/03/2020 22:33

Mine was off today and the windows and doors wide open. But I like to be cold during the day: keeps me alert. I wear fingerless gloves, Ugg boots and a lot of cashmere during the day (writer who sits at a lap top. Cold air but warm body makes me work. Heat would make me watch daytime telly).

My evening temp is around 17-19. Lower and I’m too cold. Higher and I’m too hot. I set it to kick in if it drops below 17 at night.

Purpleartichoke · 06/03/2020 22:39

I love the cold. Hate really anything above 16. Would still find 13 in the house unreasonably low except in the middle of the night when you can be under covers
