Why can't I just bloody book it?!

Moving house on the 20th March. DH asked me to get removal quotes, so I did. They're all too expensive and it's ridiculous apparently to shell out £500 on removals. He's decided that yet again we're going to get a fucking man with a van.

It's just so annoying. Why ask me to get quotes if he's going to veto anyway. And yes it's 'cheaper' but no doubt they won't take everything and oh look we now have to do most of removals ourselves.. again!! AngryAngry

Well done. I hope it all goes really well.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/03/2020 17:22

Nice one!

ememem84 · 06/03/2020 17:23

Good work. It will absolutely be money well spent. Xx

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/03/2020 17:35

Well done, I hope the week-end is better than your week has been, and that the move goes a wee bit more smoothly thanks to the movers you've booked!

ineedaholidaynow · 06/03/2020 17:38

Well done!

Does DH know?

stouffer · 06/03/2020 17:42

Not being funny but do you not have many possessions? £500 seems amazingly cheap for a removal company.

Candyfloss99 · 06/03/2020 17:45

It's not his decision if he won't even be there.

WriteronaMission · 06/03/2020 17:47

I will say it wasn't a case of sitting back and doing nothing when I booked a removal company. But it turns out I got a shitty company (and not even the cheapest).

However I would totally pay the money for a removal company again. It was a hell of a lot easier than doing it all myself.

DH wanted to do it himself and us hire a van. I veto'd that after many years of going with his plan and getting pissed off.

So YANBU to want to just book the removal company. If he has form for not helping on the day, I'd book it anyway and tell him it's done.

PlugholePencil · 06/03/2020 17:49

Glad you’ve booked it.
Why don’t you get £350 from him and pay the extra £150 yourself?

WriteronaMission · 06/03/2020 17:49

Oh the last page hadn't loaded. Just seen you booked it. Good for you!

Italiangreyhound · 06/03/2020 17:50

Personally I'd not be moving myself, a bad back injury could lead to disaster. Tell your dh he can do the moving with the man and the van but you'll not be doing it. Or if you have shared finances can you just book it?

You could negotiate a deal possibly and get a discount?

PennyMissilesAndWombPies · 06/03/2020 17:50

Well done! It'll be worth every penny.

pussycatinboots · 06/03/2020 17:54

@IanHislopForPm
Excellent news, hope everything goes as smoothly as possible.

logicbook · 06/03/2020 17:55

Well done! We did the full packing and unpacking service in our last move (admittedly i put my foot down due to having a child under two and a four month old baby) and I would never go back. It was worth every penny for sure.

drumandthebass · 06/03/2020 18:12

Well done. I just came on to say book it...book it...book it...

TheCatServant · 06/03/2020 18:13

£500 is extremely cheap. I would go with that

NomDeDieu · 06/03/2020 18:33

Maybe tell him that’s fine but that you will NOT do anymore than needed if it was a removal company.
And then sit and watch. Or even better go away with the dcs and let him get on with it.

NomDeDieu · 06/03/2020 18:35

Sorry, I missed your update.

Good for you! Maybe your DH will come to appreciate the removal company vs a man with a van

mrsBtheparker · 06/03/2020 18:42

£500 sounds very reasonable, especially if they're doing the packing too!

BaolFan · 06/03/2020 18:56

It's money well spent. We used a professional movers for our last move and it took all of the stress out of it.

The problem with a man and van is that it's a huge amount of lifting and shifting to do on his own. You run the risk of things getting damaged because he'll get tired, or he injures himself and can't lift things. How is he going to manage the bulkier items like beds and sofas? As PP have said, once someone has all your stuff in their van, you are a complete hostage to their honesty!

Professional movers are used to all of this and will have an agreed price. They'll also know how to pack the van to make the most of the space and ensure that things aren't damaged. Our stuff was on a 7.5T wagon and out of everything there was only one item damaged (a small vase).

Tell your H that if he has an issue with what you've done then he needs to take annual leave and move all the stuff himself.

BaolFan · 06/03/2020 18:57

Oh and if you are getting packing in that price then it's a bloody bargain! Ours was £750 for a two bedroom property including disassembly and reassembly of beds and bookshelves, with an extra £150 if we wanted packing.

TheThingWithFeathers · 06/03/2020 19:06

Paying for movers is ALWAYS worth it. But check if that quote includes VAT. I stupidly did not realise that VAT was going to be added on to my moving quote (my own fault for not reading things properly) until I got the invoice and had to find another hundred quid. But hopefully you are more switched on than me!

ChiaraRimini · 06/03/2020 19:15

£500 is a bargain. Moving is a PITA. Get them to pack as well, it's so worth the money

Derbee · 06/03/2020 23:53

Genuinely didn’t know that removal people pack your things. As in, they come into your house as it is, and pack EVERYTHING? And you do nothing? Or do you pack your belongings into boxes, and they pack the boxes into a van?
