Why can't I just bloody book it?!

Moving house on the 20th March. DH asked me to get removal quotes, so I did. They're all too expensive and it's ridiculous apparently to shell out £500 on removals. He's decided that yet again we're going to get a fucking man with a van.

It's just so annoying. Why ask me to get quotes if he's going to veto anyway. And yes it's 'cheaper' but no doubt they won't take everything and oh look we now have to do most of removals ourselves.. again!! AngryAngry

£500 is mega cheap, isn't it?

If that's for packing, moving and unpacking I'd snap their hands off!

Are you only moving next door, or something? Grin

sunshinesupermum · 06/03/2020 15:17

If that price includes packing just book it.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 06/03/2020 15:19

another one here, just book it.. Cheap git.

Derbee · 06/03/2020 15:21

We booked 2 men and a Luton van. They do all the lifting etc and deliver on the other side, putting stuff where you want it. They were a fraction of the cost of a proper moving company. And we still didn’t have to do the heavy work.

I doubt any removing company will actually be £500 to include coming into your house, packing your belongings into boxes etc And then moving it all. That’s just too cheap

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/03/2020 15:22

Just book it. You don't need his permission.

Or do you?

BruceAndNosh · 06/03/2020 15:22

£500?
Unless you are moving from a 1 bedroom flat with hardly any beongings, that's cheap
Book it

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/03/2020 15:22

Just book it yourself.

katy1213 · 06/03/2020 15:23

£500 sounds extraordinarily cheap for a proper removals company. Are you sure?
But why don't you just go ahead and book it? Do you normally 'obey' your husband?

ineedaholidaynow · 06/03/2020 15:25

I assume the man with a van won't include insurance either.

Just book the removals company

sundayfishfinger · 06/03/2020 15:25

Please veto him, it takes out so much of the stress. Also, your quote sounds pretty good!

We moved and I do not regret spending on the removals firm one bit.

In fact the only change I would make is for them to do the packing and wrapping of stuff too. Most offer that service and it's very pricey but it was the worst part of moving for me.

adaline · 06/03/2020 15:25

Why do you need his permission?

Just book it, especially as he won't even be there on completion day!

gingersausage · 06/03/2020 15:27

Do you always do as you’re told? He tells you to get quotes. He tells you not to book the removals. He tells you you’re doing it yourselves.

Fuck that. You’re a grown woman. Who died and put him in charge?

ineedaholidaynow · 06/03/2020 15:28

sunday the quote appears to include packing too

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/03/2020 15:29

Just book it OP, if it is affordable I dont understand why his permission is required. Why is he lord and master over everything Confused do you not have access to funds?

Yanbu to feel frustrated, because you have correctly identified that your opinion and time appears to mean very little, as does your preference- I would be concerned about that.

fiorentina · 06/03/2020 15:30

It is so worth the money. It was the thing I was most glad we spent money on. I’d seriously just book it. His decision cannot overrule yours.

When we moved in, our vendor had hired a man with a van and was still moving out at 5pm when we were waiting from 12 as our removers were so efficient, it was infuriating.

jackparlabane · 06/03/2020 15:32

Movers who pack are the best money you are likely to spend this year. Just do it and live on potatoes and carrots for a month.

NeverPromisedYouARoseGarden · 06/03/2020 15:34

Moving house is expensive and I'm all for penny-pinching but you should 100% pay someone else to pack it and move it.

Have done the man with the van thing many times and have used removals firms but the least stressful experience by far was to pay for packing and removals. Just book it.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 06/03/2020 15:36

I mean surely one of the reasons for working hard, and earning money, is so you can use it to make your life a bit easier? I think, if it’s affordable, you need to veto his veto. And if you can’t do that? Are you really sure he’s the man you want to take on the massive financial commitment of a mortgage with?

Connie222 · 06/03/2020 15:36

Book it. We just moved with only a van (no man!) and doing it all ourselves. Hell on earth.

Delicatelyscentedflavour · 06/03/2020 15:38

A man in a van is fine for short distances if you are both fit and energetic.

For a long distance move I once employed a removal company that packed and unpacked everything. It was better than a spa.

You DH is like mine and I end up doing most of the work whilst he fucks about with his record collection and diy tools and bikes and toys from his past.

The full removal treatment is the way to go.

dreamingbohemian · 06/03/2020 15:41

How much stuff do you have? That seems very cheap.

If you don't actually have very much to pack and move, I can understand not wanting to pay 500 quid. But then I can't understand why a man in a van would cost 350!

Sparklfairy · 06/03/2020 15:42

So he's getting the full removals service, but instead of £500 he pays just £350. He does fuck all either way?

Yeah fuck that. Just book it.

Enb76 · 06/03/2020 15:43

Having experienced a proper full removals where I literally didn't have to lift a finger, I would never, ever go back to a man and van. In fact, I would sell a kidney not to have to pack up a house ever again.

Book it and ignore your DH unless he does every single tiny bit of the packing himself.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2020 15:46

'Why can't I just bloody book it?!'

None of us here have any idea why you can't just book it. We all just would. You'll need to tell us why you can't, so that we can help.

msmith501 · 06/03/2020 15:46

We got a man in a van for £350 for a day. When he saw how much stuff we expected him to move, he added another £300 and then a further £200 once he had the stuff in the van. Never again
