AIBU to not chuck it all in the rubbish?

I had a clear out of old papers, payslips, bank statements - all that stuff.

It’s now bagged up and I’m no sure what to do with it.

DH wants to let the bin men take it away. I’m slightly worried about sensitive papers and ID theft. But is that a reasonable worry? It’s just going into landfill, right?

So, AIBU - yes it’ll be fine; what’s the worst that can happen?
YANBU - someone will be empty your bank account before you can blink

We have people looking through our bins for this sort of stuff. I’d shred / burn / remove identifying info.

Contact a document management company (iron mountain, recall, loads of them just google) find a local one ask them to dispose of it securely. It won't cost much.

TrippingOnSunshine · 04/03/2020 18:45

Get a shredder or burn it.

DesLynamsMoustache · 04/03/2020 18:45

Shredder! They aren't expensive.

QuestionableMouse · 04/03/2020 18:52

If you don't want shred it you can stick it in a tub of hot soapy water and it'll fall to bits.

Gingernaut · 04/03/2020 19:00

Do you have a space where you can burn it?

If not, keep it back and shred it in stages.

RedSheep73 · 04/03/2020 19:07

Shred it. Just go down to Argos and get a cheap shredder, then you can put it in the recycling afterwards.

20Newnames · 04/03/2020 19:10

Our local shredding company is about £6 for a big bag. It would take a very long time to shred that yourself in a small home shredder as it would keep overheating.

Twenty2 · 04/03/2020 19:10

Be aware that not all LA accept shredded paper. Ours doesn't.

ColourMyDreams · 04/03/2020 19:10

Can you or your husband take it to work and shred it there?

GoddessArtemis · 04/03/2020 19:12

Compost

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 04/03/2020 19:16

Shred and, if your council don’t accept it for recycling, compost bin or bury it to rot down.

Leeds2 · 04/03/2020 19:21

If it is of any use to you, I know people who use shredded paper as pet bedding (hamsters, guinea pigs).
I had a lot of similar stuff recently, so I tore off my name, address and account details and burned them in the kitchen sink. Tore the rest of it into two or three pieces, and put it in the recycling.

SpeckledyHen · 04/03/2020 19:25

Rip it up , mash it down in hot water , dry it and bin it . Costs nothing.

DontCallMeShitley · 04/03/2020 19:25

It would take a very long time to shred that yourself in a small home shredder as it would keep overheating.

You can get shredders that you turn by hand, although it would be tiring. I would pay for a shredding company, they turn up and shred it on site.

Please don't burn it, think of the crap in the air.

ThePants999 · 04/03/2020 19:26

Take it to your local Household Waste Recycling Center.

Flusteredcustard · 04/03/2020 19:30

could you shred just things like name, NI no , address and account number, if you just tear off that bit there is less to deal with

DontCallMeShitley · 04/03/2020 19:39

Hand operated shredder (there are others on the market) www.amazon.co.uk/Manual-Shredder-Office-School-Optional/dp/B077RVV9QS?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Maybe not for the OPs large quantity of paper, but someone else might find it useful.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 04/03/2020 19:43

soak them in hot soapy water, its goes to mush

dry it out and it will be a hard ball

either bin it or take it up a skip

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 04/03/2020 19:44

I just chuck ours

Alsohuman · 04/03/2020 19:46

Take it to the tip.

Oysterbabe · 04/03/2020 19:46

Why landfill and not recycling?

Alsohuman · 04/03/2020 19:47

Because you put it in the skip yourself and it will be submerged in minutes.

Raera · 04/03/2020 19:49

We use the chimenea in the garden and burn it. Faster than shredding

StCharlotte · 04/03/2020 19:59
