To find people who get angry at you for reversing into driveway ignorant

I live on a main road and I reverse my car into my driveway when i am coming back home as it’s safer and easier to reverse in and drive out rather than drive in and have to reverse out onto a main road.

Nearly every time I am reversing in, I always get dirty looks and scowls from other drivers as I am stopped momentarily on the other side of the road, with my hazard lights flashing of course.

I am just about sick of it. I try not to react but I’m getting so fed up, I just feel like blasting the horn at one of them.

What’s the best way to deal with it? Surely it’s not too much to ask people to just wait for two seconds whilst I reverse into my own driveway.

You're doing the right thing. They can poke it. I've no patience with people reversing out of their drives onto a main road. So dangerous.

FinallyHere · 04/03/2020 15:20

Best way to deal with it. Ignore.

CollieDug · 04/03/2020 15:20

YANBU. It’s illegal to reverse out of a driveway into a main road.

They’re ignorant and impatient. Ignore.

Sirzy · 04/03/2020 15:21

As long as your not doing it as a 56 point move and taking ages about it then ignore them.

TheQueef · 04/03/2020 15:22

Toothy grin, lots of acknowledging with hand salutes.

Completely disarm the buggers.

Michaelbaubles · 04/03/2020 15:22

I used to hate this. Plus people who pull up so closely behind you that you can’t get on to the drive anyway.

LoveFameTragedy · 04/03/2020 15:23

You should of course reverse in, but why are you on the wrong side of the road? I’m also fairly sure you should not have hazards on. Indicator definitely.

Whyhaveidonethis · 04/03/2020 15:24

Of course it is safer to reverse in, it is dangerous to reverse out, not sure I understand why you are on the opposite side of the road though?

Also people get confused when you start reversing with hazard lights on, they don't know you intend to cut across traffic as you aren't signalling what you are doing.

Whyhaveidonethis · 04/03/2020 15:25

@LoveFameTragedy glad it's not just me that thinks that.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/03/2020 15:26

Toothy grin, lots of acknowledging with hand salutes.

TheQueef must be my mother. Grin I've never known anyone like it for the effusive passive aggressive thanks. It works brilliantly.

Jess827 · 04/03/2020 15:26

Ignore the fuckers. You're doing the safe, legal thing.

I misunderstood what this thread was going to be about though.. I thought you were using someone else's drive and they had been rude! We're at the end of a road and people use our driveway to turn around on. (there's no turning area, it's just a road that continues and we're at the end, so if you're looking for a specific house you either need to keep going or reverse into our driveway... 9/10 times people do the latter, I even had one delivery driver gesturing for me to move off my own tarmac so he could drive on it when I was watering plants last summer).

So I was about to say AngryAngry get 9ff my drive..... But actually yanbu!!

TooDamnSarky · 04/03/2020 15:26

Hazard lights are probably confusing them and they are not expecting you to reverse. Better to indicate.

Delbelleber · 04/03/2020 15:28

Just ignore them and do the maneuver. I wouldn't put hazards on though.

Michaelbaubles · 04/03/2020 15:28

If you drive past the driveway and indicate, though, they’re expecting to you make a turn ahead, not reverse, so they pull up touching your rear bumper and then you can’t make the manoeuvre at all.

pigsDOfly · 04/03/2020 15:30

Tbh if you're reversing from the other side of the road and you've got your hazzard lights on, I'm not surpised people are getting upset with you. They can have no idea what you're intending to do.

Or maybe just misunderstanding what you're saying.

LoveFameTragedy · 04/03/2020 15:31

If your reversing lights are on it is pretty clear you are about to reverse. You should move with hazard lights on.

user1497207191 · 04/03/2020 15:32

What’s the best way to deal with it?

Nothing you can do expect grow a thick skin and ignore it.

I wonder whether your move is clear to other drivers what you're intending to do. Perhaps they just don't understand? I reverse into my office drive. I park at the side and wait till it's clear and then I do a kind of swing across the road so the nose of the car is 45 degrees to the road and then put it into reverse quickly and reverse down the drive in one - I barely get any looks/honks as it's quick and obvious.

LoveFameTragedy · 04/03/2020 15:32

Sorry! Should NOT move with hazards on!!!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/03/2020 15:32

If you drive past the driveway and indicate, though, they’re expecting to you make a turn ahead, not reverse, so they pull up touching your rear bumper and then you can’t make the manoeuvre at all.

What I do at my parents' (extremely tight) driveway is stop next to it, indicating at it, wait a couple of seconds (while hand signalling I'm going in). Then I pull forward and start reversing in. Most people get it. The ones that don't can sit and look at the reversing lights until they get the message.

D4rwin · 04/03/2020 15:33

Smile and wave.

user1497207191 · 04/03/2020 15:33

Also I indicate rather than hazard lights to make it clearer. Pretty sure you aren't supposed to use hazard lights when moving.

CakeAndGin · 04/03/2020 15:35

I have the same issue. Most of the time, I come from the direction that means my house is on the opposite side of the road to where I am. So I indicate and pull onto the side of the road, facing into traffic. But people are dicks and because I’ve slowed down their journey by 30 seconds they scowl at me or start gesturing at me. I smile very sweetly and wave at them.

Disquieted1 · 04/03/2020 15:35

If people are "always"giving you dirty looks and scowls, I doubt if every one of these hundreds of people is plain ignorant. Isn't it possible that you are actually doing something incomprehensible to them? Could you make it more obvious what exactly you are doing, as the person behind you won't be able to guess?

fpurplea · 04/03/2020 15:35

Yeah, do not use your hazards, that's not what hazards are for. If you indicate instead you might get a bit less grief. (Although some people are just impatient twats.)

TooDamnSarky · 04/03/2020 15:36

Highway Code is very clear that hazards should only be used when you are stationary.
