To find people who get angry at you for reversing into driveway ignorant

I live on a main road and I reverse my car into my driveway when i am coming back home as it’s safer and easier to reverse in and drive out rather than drive in and have to reverse out onto a main road.

Nearly every time I am reversing in, I always get dirty looks and scowls from other drivers as I am stopped momentarily on the other side of the road, with my hazard lights flashing of course.

I am just about sick of it. I try not to react but I’m getting so fed up, I just feel like blasting the horn at one of them.

What’s the best way to deal with it? Surely it’s not too much to ask people to just wait for two seconds whilst I reverse into my own driveway.

I agree you are confusing people with hazard lights.

On the other hand, I always end up saying this on these threads, but on many modern cars with reverse cameras, reversing out is actually safer, especially if you are a short-arse, like me.

TiddlestheCat · 04/03/2020 17:03

The best way to deal with it is to reverse in v e r y s l o w l y.

Freezingold · 04/03/2020 17:09

You should put some sign on your back window!

Either a funny one.
Or one saying you are very elderly or something!

DC3dilemma · 04/03/2020 17:17

I get this every day OP, I deal with it by doing it extremely slowly!

Cassandrainthenight · 04/03/2020 17:18

I moved to the house on the main road two years ago and reverse into the drive every single day, have no idea what the other drivers might be thinking, I always go just past my house, put the car into reverse and indicate left, then wait for the gap in the traffic to start reversing. If someone pulls up in that time I have no idea if they are scowling because the drive is diagonal and I have to do a very careful sort of parallel park between the hedge and the bins, I'm watching my mirrors the whole time.

However if I'm coming from the other side of the road I either have to go nose in and move the car in the night sane as a PP, or I have to go about a mile past my house to the nearest turning point and return again so that my house is on the same side as I'm approaching.
Wouldn't it be an option for you, OP? If I understood you right you are doing something quite dangerous and puzzling by reversing from the opposite direction...

Beautiful3 · 04/03/2020 17:26

Ignore them op. Today I indicated to turn right. The car behind was up my arse. I slowed down and had to stop for the other side of the road to be clear before turning. I got aggressively beefed at. Because we both had to stop for 5 seconds!!! Arsehole drivers piss me off!

Beautiful3 · 04/03/2020 17:27

Beeped!

Reginabambina · 04/03/2020 17:29

I think you mean rude rather than ignorant?

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 04/03/2020 17:31

Mucking around on the road to this extent during rush hour is dangerous for you and other drivers.

Reversing correctly does not amount to "mucking around on the road"!

DappledThings · 04/03/2020 17:32

Just adding to the general consensus about hazard lights. I'd probably glower at you too. Not for the reversing but for the confusing and wrong use of the hazard lights.

TheBlueStocking · 04/03/2020 17:38

Reversing across two lanes at rush hour while randomly flashing the hazards is absolutely mucking around.

Bahhhhhumbug · 04/03/2020 17:38

I feel your pain as I live on a main road and as its fairly tight I have to go over to the other side of road as well or I simply couldn't get the angle to get my car into drive. Those saying you shouldn't need to go on the other side of road must have cars that can bend in half. !!
Mine needs lining up somewhat to reverse into drive at a less sharp angle so I am partly facing oncoming traffic though I avoid that as much as possible by waiting for a gap.
I do wait further up the road for the traffic to be as clear as possible before I start my approach so I'm holding up as few as possible or even get a clear road on very rare occasions. .
My drives on my left as I approach usually so I slow down indicate left and stop .I even point with big arm movement from inside my car for the person behind to see 'I'm going in there' if necessary.
Yet still all but a few ,even when I quickly get my reverse lights on ,drive right up my arse and then get really angry that I wont carry on going forward. I have said to my hubby if ever I'm about to sign on the dotted line for another house on a main road then shoot me.

ElderAve · 04/03/2020 17:45

I think you need to go ahead till there is somewhere safe to turn around so that you are on the right side of the road.

Some will be scowling because of the inconvenience but for most it will be because of the dangerous manoeuvre

VadenuRewetje · 04/03/2020 17:53

You aren't doing anything wrong wrt maneuvers but I think you are incorrect to have your hazard lights on - it's confusing and doesn't tell people what they need to know. I have a similar situation although it's a busy side-road not far from joining a main road. I indicate in the direction of the pavement I am stopping by when I am stopped, which is an obvious indication of me being stopped, I then wait for a big enough gap in the traffic and put on the indicator the other way while I swing out into the road and then by the time I am reversing I don't need my indicators as I am going pretty much straight back and it's obvious what I am doing.

People being grumpy because you aren't being clear about your actions and intentions have a point.

People being grumpy just because you are reversing can FRO - if you didn't reverse in you would be just as inconvenient if not more so with reversing out, so they just have to put up with being delayed by 15 seconds.

TARSCOUT · 04/03/2020 17:54

If it is during rush hour why don't you drive in then when its quieter turn car round?

PotholeParadise · 04/03/2020 17:59

That's two people on the thread here who seem to believe that reversing a car means you can hit pedestrians or dogs.

And that anyone on the footpath should be grateful not to be hit!

eurochick · 04/03/2020 18:10

I agree with many others. Using your hazards is confusing the situation. Indicators are there to indicate your intention - use those. I don't quite get how you are ending up on the other side of the road. Pull up past your driveway whilst indicating, put car in reverse, wait for a gap in the traffic and reverse in.

Schuyler · 04/03/2020 18:20

YANBU but your incorrect use of hazard lights is probably confusing some people.

ChikiTIKI · 04/03/2020 18:33

I asse your road is too busy to wait for others to pass you so the road is clear?

My road has a lot of through traffic. I approach my house on the left and if someone is behind me I indicate left and stop outside my house so they know to pass me. Then I wait until both sides are clear, pull the front of my car out to the right while indicating right, then indicate left as I reverse back on to my driveway.

Its not a rush or anything for me though as its usually quiet enough for me to have plenty of time to move.

If it's a very busy road I can see why you might to feel the need to put hazard lights on when you stop. I see people do it sometimes when their house is on a busy road, say 30 yards from traffic lights. If they didnt use hazards, the person behind would assume they weren't stopping until the lights, and might run in the back of them as a result. Not ideal and probably annoys people but better than having your car smashed up every time you get home 😀

ChikiTIKI · 04/03/2020 18:46

*assume

MulticolourMophead · 04/03/2020 18:52

You can (and should) use hazard lights when driving on a motorway to warn drivers behind you of a hazard ahead.

Only if you are stationery.

damnthatanxiety · 04/03/2020 19:13

Lweji
Can you drive a bit further ahead and reverse elsewhere where it's safe and less inconvenient for the traffic? Or is it just other drivers who must be considerate of you?

What are you talking about? How and why would the OP drive further ahead from her driveway and then randomly reverse....into what exactly would she be reversing into? The OP is reversing INTO HER DRIVEWAY. The driveway is where it is. It is not going to helpfully move a little way up the road.Hmm

Lweji · 04/03/2020 19:16

Sorry, I meant to say turn around so that the OP would be on the same side of the road as her drive when reversing in.

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 04/03/2020 19:19

I have to reverse on my driveway as we also live on a main road and by a bus stop and people drive so fast down the road, I now just wave at them when they give me evils!

MyDcAreMarvel · 04/03/2020 19:29

YANBU. It’s illegal to reverse out of a driveway into a main road.
No it isn’t .
