Electric toothbrush

ivfbabymomma1 · 02/03/2020 21:58

I am aware this is a small issue and by no means the biggest problem in my life but...

I recently bought an electric toothbrush (came with 2 toothbrush heads) and it got delivered to my house whilst a friend was over. I opened the parcel and they saw it what it was and said oh is that yours or DHs?
I said it's for both, as our old one broke, we share it and have our own brush head each.

Well my friend was horrified that we share an electric toothbrush?! We only share the bit you hold and we have our own brush heads?!

Now I thought everyone did this?! Are we gross?????

They’re meant to be shared

I don’t think so. If there’s a few of you in the house wanting to get ready in the morning waiting for the base would be annoying! If you can afford one each why wouldn’t you? Confused

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 09:08

If there’s a few of you in the house wanting to get ready in the morning waiting for the base would be annoying!

That doesn’t happen in our house.

Why would you spend money on something you don’t need? That’s without thinking about the environmental impact.

icedancerlenny · 04/03/2020 09:13

I feel sick at the thought of this!

NoSauce · 04/03/2020 09:17

That doesn’t happen in our house

It happens in millions of houses through out the land. Every single day. People don’t have time to wait for their turn of the toothbrush base! If you only ever use it on your own you won’t understand the need for people to have their own!

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 09:19

How you know that nosauce? Are the people who are saying sharing a toothbrush base is fine lying?

Cailleach1 · 04/03/2020 09:19

Not wanting to share is a different thing. That is a choice. Each member of the family could also have their personal set of cutlery which no one else uses. We just use what is clean from the cutlery drawer. Even if someone else used it before it was last cleaned.

There is also a thing about money having more germs than your toilet seat. I accept change from strangers in shops and from the atm which must be like a petri dish. Do others say, 'ugh, but you've touched it'. We all need our own mint.

NoSauce · 04/03/2020 09:22

How do I know what? That millions of families get up at the same time everyday and need to brush their teeth, shower and get out of the house?

You seem weirdly defensive about this I have to say.

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 09:23

You seem weirdly aggressive.

NoSauce · 04/03/2020 09:24

How?!?

Get a coffee down you and chill out love.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/03/2020 09:30

NoSauce but if they’re using the same bathroom the wait is same Hmm

We do, share a bathroom, so it makes no difference.

NoSauce · 04/03/2020 09:33

It’s not the same wait. If you had a handle each you could brush at the same time.

Are you ok with people having their own if they have more than one bathroom??

Sparklfairy · 04/03/2020 09:37

NoSauce you share a shower in the mornings... Is that gross too? The bathroom is closed off and others have to wait. Why is this different? It's two minutes to brush your teeth. I'm not saying you should change now as that is your routine but to defend it so emphatically and aggressively is so weird. You're making it sound like you couldn't possibly have time in the mornings to share. Yet share the shower. And the toilet?

Maybe it's you who needs the Brew? Smile

NoSauce · 04/03/2020 09:39

Me and DH have our bathrooms Wink —and electric toothbrushes—

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/03/2020 09:40

Mine just do it after their showers & dc1 would shriek like a banshee if anyone tried to go in there with her. Even when they all had a manual tb they brushed their teeth separately, I’m the only one in this house who apparently doesn’t want their own space in the bathroom Grin. FWIW they get up at 7 ish & they’re all ready 8.

You still don’t need more than one base per bathroom though.

NoSauce · 04/03/2020 09:40

Our own bathrooms.

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 09:41

If you only ever use a bathroom on your own you won’t understand how people are able to share one!

WhiskersPete · 04/03/2020 09:42

I honestly thought they different colour rings were in case people had one each of the same model of toothbrush.

I guess if your toothbrushe hygiene is good then it's fine to share but DH doesn't clean the main bit properly and it disgusts me so I would never share with him.

Mumsnet is such an education sometimes!

VideographybyLouBloom · 04/03/2020 09:44

We're a family of 4 and have 4 complete toothbrushes. No way am I using a soggy spit ridden handle that isn't mine.

Same as us. The kids spit ridden handles are Envy (not envy) before I've had a chance to give them a proper clean.

damnthatanxiety · 04/03/2020 09:44

I would be concerned re the handles, as they get really sticky and mucky and potentially spread bugs.

errr...I wash the entire thing after every use. Who leaves the dribbled on toothpaste and spit? That's a whole other level of disgusting.

NoSauce · 04/03/2020 09:44

If you only ever use a bathroom on your own you won’t understand how people are able to share one!

Of course I do. I go on holiday frequently with DH and share a bathroom. Still prefer my own toothbrush. As he does.

Each to their own. If you prefer to share, that’s fine, it just isn’t for me.

motherheroic · 04/03/2020 09:44

Why do you need to share a toothbrush? If it was very expensive I could understand. But if it's mid priced and you can afford i I don't know why you're faffing about with head swaps. You're wearing down the toothbrush quicker as well especially if you both brush your teeth twice a day.

BlastEndedSkrewt · 04/03/2020 09:45

gross - we have one each, mine dribbles all down the handle

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 09:45

Aren’t you concerned about your children using their own sticky and mucky toothbrushes?

DesLynamsMoustache · 04/03/2020 09:46

This is such a weird thread! Everyone I know with an electric toothbrush shares the body and has different heads. I'd find it weirder having two toothbrushes charging in the same bathroom, really.

As for the 'hassle of changing heads', we remove our head at the end of brushing our teeth so when the other person wants to use it, they just stick their head on. It takes literally one second.

MN IS SO STRANGE Grin

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2020 09:47

You're wearing down the toothbrush quicker as well especially if you both brush your teeth twice a day
This argument doesn’t work. Two people will use two electric toothbrushes in the same amount of time whether they’re sharing the base or using them independently.
