I also with people would stop telling me to just use soap and water. I cant take my sink and soap dispenser non the train to work can I?

Of course not. But you can wear gloves during your commute until a time you can find soap and water.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 02/03/2020 17:27

IMHO, surely you're actually better off buying gloves and wearing those in public places, for opening doors, handling things others would etc

Well, possibly, but it’s really difficult in practice to take gloves off without contaminating the hands. And you need to be clear about what you can touch with the gloved hands and what you can’t, because it’s easy to feel invincible with gloves on and then spread contamination between surfaces because you’re washing your hands less frequently than you would if you had bare hands.

If you (generally, not just you Ariela) keep all this in mind then gloves might be a good idea in some instances.

Fluffybutter · 02/03/2020 17:28

@ShagMeRiggins no thanks , a little bottle of gel is better than walking around wearing latex gloves ..

picklebarrelfalls · 02/03/2020 17:30

IMO, to use gloves successfully you need to be removing and replacing often. It's a lot of disposables if half the population were doing it!

Atthebottomofthegarden · 02/03/2020 17:34

Try Primark, ours had stacks at the weekend when Boots etc had all run out.

Findumdum1 · 02/03/2020 17:37

They'd have to be medical grade ones gloves which I should think are also difficult to get hold off at the moment as well. You'd also have to change them regularly so would have to carry 4 or 5 pairs with you. A small bottle of alcohol gel is more efficient and what is recommended. Also, its pretty irresponsible to be dropping contaminated gloves in public bins, or on the floor in stations since there aren't any bins. Hospitals have specific contamination bins to dispose of used gloves where they are incinerated without being touched by any poor cleaners.

RoseMartha · 02/03/2020 17:37

Just been to shops . B and m had limited amount.

I think some shops have some first thing in morning but is selling out quickly.

PineappleDanish · 02/03/2020 17:45

Just buy some bloody soap and stop panicking.

ShagMeRiggins · 02/03/2020 18:09

No it isn’t. Ask a scientist about anti-bac gel and how it reacts within 20 minutes. Hint: it multiplies everything unless hands are washed with soap and water. It’s not effective to use gel rather than wash with soap and water at earliest opportunity.

And I wasn’t referring to latex gloves, but it’s surprising you think that’s less useful than gel. One is a clear barrier while the other is an applied barrier.

Though I do agree with the poster who suggested it’s not helpful to dump a bunch of latex gloves in bins, I also agree with the poster who said just wash your hands and be careful about contact.

Let’s not panic.

Skyejuly · 02/03/2020 18:11

Make it.

Fluffybutter · 02/03/2020 18:13

@ShagMeRiggins I’m allergic so yes it is ..

Findumdum1 · 02/03/2020 18:20

I am a scientist. Stop making stuff up. You dont have to wash your hands after using alcohol-based hand sanitizer for killing viruses. Clue: alcohol evaporates.

You cant wash your hands enough though, especially at the moment, so like all rational people I will be using hand sanitizer on my way into and from work on public transport and then washing my hands as soon as I get to my destination (as I always have done).

aintnothinbutagstring · 02/03/2020 18:27

Carex original hand gel is 70% alcohol.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/03/2020 18:27

Our local chemist is selling an expensive anti virus virucidal sanitiser. They ordered industrial size hospital sanitiser and despenced into small €5 bottles. They are flying out.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/03/2020 18:28

I was in Savers buying mouthwash at lunchtime and the lady before me at checkout asked the sales assistant if they had any. The SA said they had three boxes delivered this morning but all of it sold straight away. I have a little pocket pack of the antibacterial wipes in my makeup bag, and a bottle of sanitiser on my desk - I bought both in Boots last week.

Fluffybutter · 02/03/2020 18:28

@Findumdum1 your common sense isn’t welcome on this thread ...

stickerqueen · 02/03/2020 18:31

our local poundland has some but I don't need any has hubby always uses sanitizer after changing a nappy so we always buy the big bottles and use the big ones to fill smaller bottles to carry around. Looking at Hubby's supply we won't need any for months. I'm actually glad he stocked up in January.

cousinboneless · 02/03/2020 22:28

Oh ffs. It's not like the plague is rife. Stop frothing! Wash your hands. Y'know like you would normally. It shouldn't take mass media bullshit panicking to ensure basic hygiene. But no, carry on escalating and if you manage to get some anti bac hand gel, rub it over the pearls you're clutching too Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 02/03/2020 22:30

I saw loads in Primark. It's all cartoon branded, but if it does the job...

Branster · 02/03/2020 22:51

OMG it all makes sense now! Went to buy one of those bandage fabric thingies from the my local supermarket yesterday before closing time and there was a huge gap on the shelf with a solitary Dettol bottle!
I thought Detoll is for cleaning surfaces, can you use it diluted to clean hands and how effective is it compared to a strong hand sanitiser? Not keen on the smell.
I thought bleach solution for cleaning around the house should be sufficient although I don’t like using bleach in general but should the need arise I’ll do it. And for hands I usually put some medicinal spirit in small spray bottles, it does the job (I always use this to disinfect phones, hands in an emergency and such like).
I wish people would stop panicking and keep to basic hygiene rules.

Dailyjunglegrind · 02/03/2020 23:07

Discovered regular supplies have ended up, ebay & fb market place.. everyone is profiteering. Simply eye watering prices for a little purse pack...

Gilead · 02/03/2020 23:11

@cousinboneless, do tell how I manage with soap and water whilst out and about, or when I have (yet again) shit myself in the middle of nowhere?

cousinboneless · 03/03/2020 07:53

Go to a public toilet to clean yourself up and use the facilities? There's usually running water... and hand soap. If the soap has run out you can buy that instead of sold out anti bac gel? What did you do before hand gel was available?

cousinboneless · 03/03/2020 07:54

If I often shit myself I would avoid being in the middle of nowhere.

kevintheorangecarrot · 03/03/2020 07:57
