I have tendonitis and conjunctivitis and I've had an allergic reaction to my sodding contact lenses. I've sat with my foot on frozen peas while pouring drops into my poorly eye all day as well as wearing sunglasses indoors as I'm so light sensitive.

I said to D(ick of a)H that it was a shite end to the week and he is adamant that Sunday is the first day of the week. So please help me feel better by being smugly right.

YABU - Sunday is the first day because obviously we have a day of rest right at the start of the week according to the Bible

YANBU - clearly your husband is stupider than Baldrick's turnip, you should skip the divorce and when your foot is up to it bury him under the patio.

  • I won't be doing any burying, I've just had my nails done, it's just illustrating how right I am.

Is he American? For some bizarre reason they make Sunday the first day when it’s clearly not

HindsightIs2020 · 01/03/2020 22:13

Technically it's called the weekend because Saturday is one end of the week, and Sunday is the other.

Glenthebattleostrich · 01/03/2020 22:13

Nope, he's British. Just clearly an arse

GrumpysOtherHalf · 01/03/2020 22:14

Sunday is the last day of the week

iheartislesofwight · 01/03/2020 22:15

i regard monday as the first day of the week.

Glenthebattleostrich · 01/03/2020 22:15

But then if Sunday is the start of the week, it should be weekendystart.

Wow,the results are at over 100%. Clearly this topic needs discussion 🤣

In biblical terms, the seventh day - the day of rest - would actually be Saturday given that it’s from the Old Testament. However, I think it is pretty clear in modern day terms that Sunday is the end of the week. It irritates me when people say it’s the beginning.

Lunafortheloveogod · 01/03/2020 22:21

It’s the weekend in our house..

But... maybe having a day off at the start of the week and the end makes it feel better to those who work Monday-Friday. So they just lie to themselves.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 01/03/2020 22:22

Yeah, Sunday is a day of rest, what kind of lazy barsteward starts the week off with a rest? Tut.

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 22:23

Sunday is not the first day of the week in the U.K.

Here it is in black and white.

Oww and a quick question
RandomMess · 01/03/2020 22:25

Depends what calendar you use!

Originally Saturday was Sabbath and the 7th day...

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 01/03/2020 22:26

Actually when I cracked open the (adorable sloth) 2020 calendar in January, it runs the weeks left to right starting Sunday ending Saturday. It’s messing with my head I tell ye. If I don’t turn up to something on a Friday cos I mistook it for a Saturday, it’s not my fault, ok?

frogsbreath · 01/03/2020 22:28

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Satuurddayy

7 days are in a week

Did no one else sing this in school?

As a pp has shown, the calendar week used to start on a Sunday and it was changed to reflect the standard working week and weekend.

KellyHall · 01/03/2020 22:29

Sunday is the last day of the week.

Your dh is, as you quite rightly said, a dick!

KellyHall · 01/03/2020 22:30

Also, cooled chamomile tea and a fresh piece of cotton wool for each wipe is the best cure for conjunctivitis 👍

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 22:38

People can argue the toss all they like. It changed to Monday in 1971.
The US kept it as Sunday.

sofaandchoc · 01/03/2020 22:43

Why would you have a day of rest at the start of the week before you've done anything?

OP my nails are shite, I'm up for some digging

RB68 · 01/03/2020 22:43

I don't think it matters what day of the week it is but its an arsey thing to pick an argument over when you are clearly not having a good time of it - he should be on tea, cake, chocolate, sympathy duty and STFU about anything that is not related to giving you sympathy to be honest...

BusterMove · 01/03/2020 22:45

Some calendars do have Sunday first.
However, I think they are wrong. It's the seventh day, the sabbath.
In the Muslim world, Friday is last day of the week (traditionally Thurs/Fri was the weekend, although some muslim countries are now Friday/Sat for ease of business with places like Europe and the USA). And in Israel, Saturday is the seventh day. So obviously this is tied to Abrahamic religion, and since the UK is still nominally a Christian Country, surely Sunday must be the seventh day.

ByAppointmentTo · 01/03/2020 22:45

I remember being taught in school that Sunday was the first day of the week.

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 22:47

Here you go. www.timeanddate.com/calendar/days/monday.html

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 01/03/2020 22:48

Sunday is the first day of the week in trucking terms. I have always accounted Sunday to saturday.

FlamingoAndJohn · 01/03/2020 22:48

I remember being taught in school that Sunday was the first day of the week.

You possibly were, but it changed in 1971 when Britain adopted international standard ISO 8601

Times10 · 01/03/2020 22:49

We use to sell diaries and some started Sundays and other Mondays. For me, Mondays make sense, but I can see that if you were brought up with Sundays as the first day it would be strange to change it later.
