People using lifts

Aquarius1619 · 29/02/2020 18:59

I’m actually a bit annoyed at myself for being petty enough to post this.
But this really got under my skin today!! I have an 11 month old who isn’t keen on the pram, will sit in there for 15 minutes or so but as soon as I stop moving she has a meltdown.
So we were waiting for the lift as we were parked on floor 5 in the local shopping mall today and I was stood behind a queue of people waiting to use the lift. People with no shopping, no kids, just didn’t want to use the stairs. And it took 20 minutes for me to get in the lift because each time it would come to my floor it was full of people with no kids, no wheelchairs, no walking sticks so then we’d wait for the next one then one of the people in front of me with nothing to carry would get in it. I know every disability isn’t visible either but FFS I’m talking a load of people here. By the time some of them had eventually got in the lift it would’ve been quicker for them to have walked up and down the whole place! Meanwhile DD is having a meltdown because we’d been stood around for ages. Is it unreasonable to expect people to just use the stairs and free up the lifts for people who actually need them? If I have no pram with me I always use the stairs

OP posts:

I'm pretty sure anybody who waits 20 minutes for a lift needs to use it.

ShriekingBansheela · 01/03/2020 16:11

VivaLEntente So wouldn’t you rather get straight in the lift rather than have to wait, standing up, for 20 minutes like the OP did while fit and healthy folk stand there waiting or the lift?

Of course canyons is free to use the lift. That doesn’t negate the fact that many people could easily use the stairs if they weren’t so idle.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 01/03/2020 16:12

I don't care if people call me lazy, idle, gormless. If I feel like using a lift, I will. That's what they are for.

It's easier when I carry stuff or have my kids with me anyway.

Just wait for your turn.

Quicklittlenamechange · 01/03/2020 16:13

But Flopdrop where would the policing of this end?
Individuals can decide whether they need to be in a lift or not .
No one elses input needed.
Or shall we police disabled bays, P&C spaces, priority seats on tube/buses ?
I dont want or need to explain my issues to some random twat thanks very much !

TryingToBeBold · 01/03/2020 16:14

I am going to fully admit that there is no way in hell I would climb 5 stories in a mall. I would wait for that lift. I am not disabled

This applies to me too.

If I have a shed load of shopping.. should I still get the stairs?

cologne4711 · 01/03/2020 16:16

YANBU OP. If people can walk they should walk (as long as the stairs are next to the lift - in some places you need a geography degree to find them).

Of course this thread has filled up with all the people saying why they are special, in the same way as them being special and needing to drive their kids to school half a mile, or drive a SUV despite only having one child and living in a city, or leave the engine running when stationary or parking on a pavement or letting dc play computer games without headphones.

But the simple truth is, most people are lazy and don't have disabilities.

However I do agree with this I'm pretty sure anybody who waits 20 minutes for a lift needs to use it

WeeNippy · 01/03/2020 16:18

You've no way of knowing if those people were fit and healthy. I'm not disabled but after a recent back injury I am finding stairs painful so would use a lift if available at the moment. Lots of people live with invisible acute or chronic pain, in fact I think about half the population suffers with back pain for example. It's like judging someone who doesn't 'look' disabled using the disabled toilets.

Flopdrop · 01/03/2020 16:18

@Alsohuman I agree with you than everyone has the right to use them and I would never dream of saying anything to anyone about it, but I know that if I, as a relatively healthy person in my 40s was waiting for a lift I would allow anyone with a pushchair/wheelchair etc to go ahead of me.

Not that i would be waiting for the lift in the first place.

Aridane · 01/03/2020 16:19

Fuck me - I’m not walking up x5 flights of stairs!!

Quicklittlenamechange · 01/03/2020 16:20

cologne
Have my "special" and the pain that goes with it Hmm
Stop assuming everyone is lazy and be less ignorant

Aridane · 01/03/2020 16:20

Frankly your inconveniences are your own fault for being silly enough to go shopping within a shopping centre on a payday weekend and expecting it to be smooth sailing - of course it’s going to be ridiculously busy. It’s the highest turnover weekend of the month.

Exactly!

Flopdrop · 01/03/2020 16:20

Quicklittlenamechange

I would just expect people to do the decent thing. No policing required.

PurpleDaisies · 01/03/2020 16:21

It's like judging someone who doesn't 'look' disabled using the disabled toilets.

Except lifts are for everybody. There is no stipulation about who can and can’t use them.

Alsohuman · 01/03/2020 16:21

It’s not the decent thing. It’s what you think they should do.

PurpleDaisies · 01/03/2020 16:23

I know that if I, as a relatively healthy person in my 40s was waiting for a lift I would allow anyone with a pushchair/wheelchair etc to go ahead of me.

Why? People with pushchairs aren’t unhealthy or less able to wait than anyone else. Confused

Quicklittlenamechange · 01/03/2020 16:23

Flopdrop
Then assume that those using the lift need to.
Remove your assumptions and ignorance about disability.
If I had a pound for every " but you dont look ..."

ZigZaggyZoo · 01/03/2020 16:28

Sedentary lifestyle. A lot of people have forgotten how to use their muscles. I remember having great fun racing up and down the stairs. Shouldn't come as a surprise so many people want to get in a lift though, given the obesity crisis.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 01/03/2020 16:30

It's not the decent thing at all, it's some people feel very entitled and doesn't accept that everybody else has as much right as they have.

What's next? I can't grab a table in a busy cafe or restaurant because someone might need to sit down more than I do? It might be true they do, but does that mean I am never allowed to go anymore?

I can't grab the last couple of xx insert food item xxx because someone might need it more than I do?

I can't grab the last shopping trolley because it's easier for me to juggle my shopping than it would be for someone else?

I can't go in the very last parking space near school/ station/surgery because someone else might need it more?

It's not being entitled to live your life normally. No need to be rude or an asshole, but not need to be a martyr either.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 01/03/2020 16:31

A lot of people have forgotten how to use their muscles. I remember having great fun racing up and down the stairs.

Good for you.

I race up and down stair when I train, I can't pretend it's "fun" and just because I am reasonably fit and healthy doesn't mean I am banned from lifts which are nice to take sometimes.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 01/03/2020 16:32

I sympathise but voted YABU as arthritis isn't visible and stairs are really tough if you suffer from it.

Flopdrop · 01/03/2020 16:36

@Quicklittlenamechange I said that some of them may have a hidden disability. I also said that I wouldn't dream of saying anything to them (because they may have a disability). Didn't you read those bits?

I was simply making the point that i think it would be the decent thing to do to let people who have no option but to use the lift to go first, and if you are able to use the stairs you should.

Quicklittlenamechange · 01/03/2020 16:40

Sorry I didnt see that bit ! Flop
Well theres not much you can do then so all a bit pointless really 🤷‍♂️

CalamityJune · 01/03/2020 16:40

YANBU and it's so annoying that people are incessantly repeating the "not all disabilities are visible" line when the OP stated that very clearly in her post.

It's highly unlikely that twenty minutes went by and every single person using those lifts had a hidden disability.

Everyone can use the lifts, but if it's busy and you are able to walk then i agree that the decent thing to do is not add to the volume of traffic using the lift.

Brettney · 01/03/2020 16:40

Why? People with pushchairs aren’t unhealthy or less able to wait than anyone else.

How do you know?

PurpleDaisies · 01/03/2020 16:45

Are you seriously saying that you’d assume someone with a pushchair is sick or disabled brettney?
