The stairs if our house have two huge walls at either side and the space looks huge. DH thinks it looks ok as it is but I think it looks awful and bare!

AIBU to think it needs something?! I suggested a dado rail at least but DH said that was incredibly 90s but look how big the fucking wall is!

What lighting do you have over the stairs?
It does look like it needs "something"

BruceAndNosh · 29/02/2020 14:53

CAn you post a photo look up the stairs?

JFDI2019 · 29/02/2020 14:53

Yanbu, but uuuuggghhh, not a fucking dado rail!

I have pretty much the exact same stairs and have painted it a deep grey and hung loads of pictures and paintings, and I love it.

JhustJenny · 29/02/2020 14:53

We have the same and I don’t take it under my notice at all. Walk hanging? Pictures? Something like the attached?

There is a Pinterest. Make use of dead space above stairwell.

I'd make it a photo gallery, fill it with non-serious family photos. Doodles by the children. Random signs you like.
Or even a giant mirror or funky wall art?

SummerHouse · 29/02/2020 14:57

Book storage is genius.

MikeUniformMike · 29/02/2020 14:57

It needs one big thing on the middle bit

IndigoHexagon · 29/02/2020 14:57

Can’t take a photo at the moment as it being decorated, but we have the same. We bought some of the large square Ribba frames from Ikea and framed our old vinyl albums (the ones that had meaning or memories attached), and turned the space into a gallery type thing.

Thehop · 29/02/2020 14:58

Oh no leave it! It looks so clean and fresh!

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 29/02/2020 14:58

I would do a rogues gallery of family pictures mixed in with any other interesting bits of art or whatever.

PissyPantsPeach · 29/02/2020 14:58

Well I was going to get a Banksy stencil of the little girl blowing the weed with all the bits floating up the wall but decided it would look shit

we have the same long narrow wall above our stairs some art or wall hangings would brighten it up and not too hard to put up when my carpet goes down on mine I have a large wolf wall hanging for facing wall and two long narrow pictures for the sides

SwedishEdith · 29/02/2020 14:59

I like the book storage but how do you reach them all?

A dado rail would be...odd.

Oysterbabe · 29/02/2020 15:03

We have a rail where we hang medals and loads of photos.

We have the same to, we love to travel so ive made it into a travel photo wall, with photos mimicking a world map. For the drop above the stairs I bought a compass shelving thingy from dunelm, its quite big so doesnt need anything else on it.

RandomMess · 29/02/2020 15:05

We have a lazy maid airer hanging from the ceiling (3 story house so not many people go up there) plus 4 large portrait shape pictures one of each child.

PissyPantsPeach · 29/02/2020 15:29

@Ilikewinter

I’ve just looked that up and I love it. I’m heading to dunelm tomorrow so I’ll get that and I’m thinking we’ll frame some of our travel photos in black
Frames so they contrast the white wall

I had this and I built room behind it to extend bedroom. Best thing I've ever done.

lidoshuffle · 29/02/2020 15:50

I put a big mirror on the wall and an elaborate pendant lamp that reflected in it. It really doubled up the space (that couldn't easily be used for much) and light.

mrsbyers · 29/02/2020 16:08

Ours is actually a wall of glass blocks which form a wall in the small bedroom / home office - works well

Sn0tnose · 29/02/2020 16:22

We used to have something like that. We printed off all the lovely photos we’d taken that were just sitting in albums or on memory cards, put them in lots of different frames and made a photo wall, where we saw them every day.

ChristmasFluff · 29/02/2020 16:57

I was going to say bookshelves and pictures, but I see others beat me to it. Be sure you have a duster that can reach the tops of your pictures and books etc though.
