metronidazole and loosing my mind?

Wigglewaggle01 · 28/02/2020 16:58

Does anyone have any experience of metronidazole?
I feel like I'm loosing my mind at the moment! I have blurred vision and feel incredibly dizzy and the only reason I can see for it is the metronidazole.
I've looked online and other than nausea (which I have also had) I haven't seen any symptoms of dizziness or blurry vision.

I nearly fell over earlier just walking from the garden indoors.

Please tell me this is all normal and will go in a couple of days Sad

It’s hideous, hideous stuff! I’ve never taken anything like it. For the 5 days I was on it plus another couple I thought I was going mad!
I’ve refused to take it again since. I just didn’t feel like me!!

katscamel · 28/02/2020 17:03

I've just finished 2 courses of these and didn't have any problems. Make sure you don't drink (alcohol) with them and up to 48 hours after. If worried either wait and try and get appointment with Dr or phone 111 for advice.

Wigglewaggle01 · 28/02/2020 17:06

I don't drink so that's not an issue.

I don't feel like I'm allergic or anything I just feel really odd and got 5 full days to go yet Sad

Mainly I'm trying to reassure myself that feeling odd like this is normal and although crap it will go once I've finished the course.

Me too. I was hallucinating, dizzy and spaced out on it. I'll never take it again.

BentBastard · 28/02/2020 17:10

I had this several years ago and it was absolutely horrible, but in my
Case, after a few days, just as I reached the point where I thought I couldn't go on with it, it did settle down and was ok after that.

BigButtons · 28/02/2020 17:13

Awful, awful stuff. Have told GP I will never take it again.

Trumpton · 28/02/2020 17:13

I have to say it made me very anxious and gave me bad dreams , a foul taste in my mouth and ,yes, dizziness !
Foul foul foul .

endofthelinefinally · 28/02/2020 17:15

Blurred vision is a side effect, but the advice is to inform your doctor immediately if this happens.

monday1983 · 28/02/2020 17:19

Yes i had the same in the first 2 days , had taken double dose by mistake , it did settle after 2-3 days

lemontreebird · 28/02/2020 17:20

Not had any bad effect on me and I forgot I finished the course in the morning and drank wine at lunchtime.
Fully expected to be sick, but nada.

QuestionableMouse · 28/02/2020 17:22

It made me feel like I was dying. Totally exhausted to the point where I slept on the bathroom floor because I didn't have the energy to get up. Felt like there was a thick sheet of plastic between me and the world. It was so bad I asked for a different antibiotic.

Awful stuff.

MimiLaRue · 28/02/2020 17:23

Metronizdole is vile, toxic stuff. I took it once and felt like crap- as if I had poisoned myself. I took the whole course because I couldn't bear the thought of stopping and having to re start again at some point in the future. I remember having a metallic taste in my mouth, feeling just wiped out and gross. Hope you feel better soon OP Flowers

DishingOutDone · 28/02/2020 17:28

I've had a bad experience with it as well. How much longer are you meant to take it for OP? Can you get it swopped?

Toddlerteaplease · 28/02/2020 17:29

We use it all the time at work. I've never heard of anyone having side effects like that.

MinesaBottle · 28/02/2020 17:31

I felt the same on a high dose. I stopped it a couple of days before the end of the course because I couldn’t take it any more. I’m allergic to penicillin though so can’t take many antibiotics, so tbh I’d take a low dose again. It was really scary though.

BigButtons · 28/02/2020 18:58

Mind you I had a chronic sinus infection last year and I refused metronidozal so the Gp gave me something similar which was on balance even worse. I couldn’t even finish the course as it gave me hideous night sweats all night long.

Nochangeplease · 28/02/2020 19:01

I’ve taken many medications over the years, some really strong stuff and yet this is the only one that I’ve had noticeable side effects from.

SamanthaJayne4 · 28/02/2020 19:03

I cannot take a few antibiotics. Not allergic , just sensitive to them . I had Metronidazole for a gum infection and it worked well without any side effects. I didn't drink alcohol. I hope they find one to suit you OP.

Whatsername177 · 28/02/2020 19:07

Yes. I took if after I experienced infection following a mmc. It made me feel awful. But, it was a horrific time anyway so I'm not sure if that made me feel worse.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/02/2020 19:11

I had it intravenously and it affected my eyesight, thankfully only temporarily. I told the nurse and was made to feel I was imagining it and she said my eyesight was affected because I was upset! I spoke to my GP about it afterwards and thankfully she believed me as she seen it happen before.

I would only take it now if it was the difference between life and death.

ratspeaker · 28/02/2020 19:14

Watch out for mouthwash containing alcohol
I've also felt awful when taking it but some of that could have been the infection too

LakieLady · 28/02/2020 19:51

I lost my lunch when I took it. It made me really sick.

ambereeree · 28/02/2020 19:55

My tongue went totally white with it. Nasty stuff.

Wigglewaggle01 · 28/02/2020 19:56

I'm sorry nearly everyone has had a rubbish time with them but being honest it has made a feel a bit better to know i'm not loosing my mind and it's fairly common!

I will carry on until the end mainly because I'm more concerned something else might be worse.

I have five more days so fingers crossed it goes quick or I might just hibernate.

Had a severe allergic reaction to it, took six days in hospital to recover- iv never yet heard of anyone being ok on it, from nausea and indigestion to breathing problems and hallucinations. A friend of mine can smell and taste bonfires when taking it.
