metronidazole and loosing my mind?

Wigglewaggle01 · 28/02/2020 16:58

Does anyone have any experience of metronidazole?
I feel like I'm loosing my mind at the moment! I have blurred vision and feel incredibly dizzy and the only reason I can see for it is the metronidazole.
I've looked online and other than nausea (which I have also had) I haven't seen any symptoms of dizziness or blurry vision.

I nearly fell over earlier just walking from the garden indoors.

Please tell me this is all normal and will go in a couple of days Sad

Yeps - it’s nasty stuff! Sadly it’s one of the 3 antibiotics I can take, I’ve ended up with severe reactions to all of the others I’ve tried, normally involving a hospital stay! I do get a rash with it but as long as I take a piriton I am ok. This is what my surgeon suggested.

I’ve had it 4 times since December all for 5 to 7 days. I start feeling really awful after 36 hours (yes I’ve actually timed it!) headaches, sweats, metallic taste in my mouth, nausea, it also mucks up my bowels and with an IBD it’s a nightmare, the list is endless when I take this stuff.

Fingers crossed you start to feel better op!

Ugh it’s hideous stuff. I took the single dose recently for BV. I spent a week feeling sweaty and dizzy and fuzzy eyed and then to top it all off I got horrendous thrush.

So then I’ve taken Canesten for the thrush and guess what? Pretty sure I’m back to BV again (draggy feeling, greyish discharge, bit of a pong).

I think this time I’ll go for the longer course and see if I can avoid the symptoms. Metal mouth, blurry vision, and I’m pretty sure my MH nosedive is connected.

I tried wrapping the pill in bread and that did help with the metal mouth but nothing helped with the other side effects

It’s just funny how things effect people differently. I’ve had it a few times and once IV when in hospital and didn’t have any effects that I didn’t like (apart from the not drinking alcohol!). I can feel rotten in amoxicillin though.
I hope you feel better soon OP and given how bad you feel I’d be calling nhs 24 (or whatever equivalent you have) .

I had a horrid experience with it and will never take it again - suddenly felt really agitated and depressed and then I started losing sensation in my hands and feet. Apparently that is a quite common side effect as it can affect the nervous system. My GP told me to stop taking it immediately.

I've never had a problem with any other medicine.

Spoke to someone at the time whose mother had become severely depressed when on it and her doctor had said to make sure she was never given it again.

Good luck - hope you feel better soon!
